Teacher Candidate: Lily Anderson

Date: December 4, 2016

Grade and Topic: Second grade science

Length of Lesson: 100 minutes over 2 days

Mentor Teacher: Knowles

School: University of Memphis- IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson plan is part of a unit covering the life cycles of various organisms.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given access to YouTube videos and educational games, TSW complete a worksheet packet with 100%
accuracy.
Given access to Youtube videos and educational games, TSW create a graphic organizer using Kidspiration that
describes five life cycles and their corresponding phases with at least 11/12 on the provided rubric.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Tennessee State Standard GLE 0207.4.1- Compare the life cycles of various organisms.
ISTE Standard
1.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes.
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression.

Technology Integration
-Students will use the above listed videos and games in order to learn about the life cycles of various
organisms. With this new knowledge they will be able to complete a worksheet packet and create a
graphic organizer, using Kidspiration, that displays their understanding.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of each phases of five different life cycles by
completing a worksheet packet and creating a graphic organizer.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of TN science standard GLE 0207.2.2
This knowledge will be critical when learning TN science standard GLE 0307.4.1
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready
for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction
-TTW explain that all animals go through life cycles, some much more complicated than others. TTW
explain that the students will learn about how five species develop by watching YouTube videos and
playing online games. TTW will explain that with the newly learned information they will be able to
complete a worksheet packet and create a graphic organizer that describes the phases from the five life
cycles.
Procedures
Prior to the Computer (5 mins on day 1)
Teacher Procedures:
1. Give the students a list of the websites they must use in order to complete the assignment.
2. Hand out the worksheets that students will complete while watching the videos and playing the
games.
3. Explain that the students must have their worksheets checked by the teacher before they can
begin their graphic organizer because they need the correct answers on the worksheets in order to
complete the organizer.
4. Hand out the graphic organizer rubric.

Student Procedures:
1. TSW listen carefully to instructions.
At the computer (50 mins on day 1)
Teacher Procedures:
1. Have students open their internet browser, plug in their headphones, and watch each YouTube link.
2. Remind students to be filling out their worksheets as they move through each video.
3. Have the students play all three games once they have watched all five videos.
4. Check completed worksheets. If worksheets are correct help child create Kidspiration account. If
worksheets are incorrect assist child in understanding what the correct answer is and why, and then
assist them in creating Kidspiration account.
5. Walk around and help students navigate through YouTube, Sheppard Softwares, and Kidspiration as
needed.
Student procedures:
1. Open internet browser and plug in headphones.
2. Type in the first link on the provided list of websites.
3. Watch the YouTube video in its entirety.
4. Answer the questions on the worksheet that pertain to the video.
5. Complete steps 2-4 for the other four links under YouTube Videos on the list of websites.
6. Go to the link under Sheppard Softwares and click on each of the three animals to play the three
games.

7. Raise your hand and ask the teacher to check your worksheet.
8. Once the teacher feels that you understand the content of the worksheets they will assist you in
creating a Kidspiration account.
9. Navigate through the tools on Kidspiration in order to create a graphic organizer that is up to par with
the rubric.
After the computer (45 mins on day 2)
Teacher Procedures:
1. Have the students come up one at a time and display their graphic organizer on the projector.
2. Grade the students graphic organizers while they are presenting using the rubric.
Student Procedures:
1. Explain your graphic organizer to your classmates and to your teacher.

Closure
-TTW poll the class for questions and record all grades.
