Lesson Plan: Teen Pregnancy Prevention: Baby Project

RATIONALE
In 2010, 98% of teen births were from ages 15-19 and in the same year $208 million dollars were
spent on teen childbearing in the state of New Jersey, according to The National Campaign to Prevent
Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. Though the students average age in the 9th grade is 14-15 years, it is
much more proactive to educate students about the costs of raising a child now than to be reactive and
teach the costs and responsibilities in high school. And mandated by the New Jersey Core Curriculum
Content Standards, all 9th grade students should be able to understand the short and long term impacts of
teen pregnancy, as well as, to be able to determine resources to assist with parenting. This lesson will
educate students on the costs and responsibilities of staying healthy during a pregnancy and raising a
child after child birth.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This lesson should be taught to 9th 10th grade students.
NEW JERSEY CORE CURRICULUM CONTENT STANDARDS
2.2 Integrated Skills: All students will develop and use personal and interpersonal skills to support a
healthy, active lifestyle
2.2.12.B.1 Predict the short- and long-term consequences of good and poor decision-making on oneself,
friends, family, and others.
2.4 Human Relationships and Sexuality: All students will acquire knowledge about the physical,
emotional, and social aspects of human relationships and sexuality and apply these concepts to support a
healthy, active lifestyle.
2.4.8.C.3 Determine effective strategies and resources to assist with parenting.
2.4.8.C.4 Predict short- and long-term impacts of teen pregnancy.
TIME REQUIRED
This lesson will require 40 minutes, however, students may need extra time to complete project,
and one week is max.
GOALS
In conclusion to this lesson, the goal is to prevent teen pregnancy by teaching the costs and
responsibilities of, but not limited to, the prenatal care, doctors visits, labor, diapers, clothes, and basic
living expenses to raise a child as a teenager in New Jersey.
OBJECTIVES
Behavioral: By the end of this lesson or project, students will be able to demonstrate communication
skills with their group to complete the project and come up with compromising strategies to save money
to raise a child. They will have no more than one week to complete project, if extra time is needed.
Cognitive: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to list 3 reliable and thoughtful reasons to
abstain from sex to prevent pregnancy, in relevance to the cost of raising a child.

Affective: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand and share the long term
responsibilities, expense-related, to other peers to help prevent teen pregnancy.
CONTENT
As the students already know, the 9 months of pregnancy is just the beginning to a dramatic
change of responsibilities in a persons life, especially a teenager. From the previous lessons, students
already understand and have ideas of what happens during the nine months of pregnancy and what a
baby needs to nourished during their neediest years. So to end the unit, students will be creating a Baby
Expense Poster. The Expense poster is supposed to signify the expenses and costs to raise a baby and
students will see how quickly costs add up.
The class should be divided into groups of 3-4 (total of 4 groups) and be given a specific time
frame of a babys life. The time frames are;
1) 0-5 months of pregnancy (Prenatal care costs, ultra sounds, doctor visits, prenatal pills,
bloodwork, lab work, and hospital costs for birth)
2) Babys medical care (immunizations, sick visits, check-ups, and medicine)
3) Babys 0-12 months (diapers, bottles, wipes, food [formula, fruit, and baby cereal], and
childcare for one year)
4) Costs of furnishing a nursery (crib, car seat, bassinet, clothing storage, and any other
miscellaneous items needed)
Students will then be supplied with their materials to work with their groups to create their Baby
Expense Poster. Students may use their phone or the classroom computer to research prices for an item,
however, only one phone per group should be visible. Every poster should contain at least 10 items
and/or health care necessity with their price, pictures or creative drawings, and a total price. Students
can begin working on the poster as soon as all instruction have been given. The teacher will walk around
to give feedback and help any groups that may need help. This poster will be presented in class.
MATERIALS/PREPARATION
For this lesson the students and teacher will need:
Expo markers and erasers
Poster board 20x24
30 pack of Color markers
48 Pack of Crayons
4 of each Buy-Buy Baby and BabyRUs brochures and catalogs
Cellphone or computer classroom
4 Stick glues
Prenatal care and baby care pamphlets (get at nearest medical center)
20 pencils and/or pens
ACTIVITY/PROCEDURE (METHOD)
For the initial discussion, first the teacher will allow the students to settle down and take
attendance, 3 minutes. Then the teacher will review the units lessons covered before, like changes the
female body goes through when pregnant (by the month) and the 3 long and 3 short term consequences
of teen pregnancy, 6 minutes. The teacher should allow other students to answer and not the same
person. Students may use their notes or sheets theyve been given.
After, the lessons main activity will begin with a motivational/ introduction lecture. The teacher

will introduce the activity as such, Now weve covered how someone becomes pregnant and the
consequences of having a child; however, we havent really understood the real responsibilities of
having a child. Today youll do just that. Today we will be making a Baby Expense Poster. We will
see and research the actual expenses of having a baby, everything from the costs of doctors visits to the
costs of a crib. The students will then be put into groups and the groups must select one project
manager. Each project manager will select a sheet from the teacher that has the topic of their poster and
the instructions for each group. The teacher will ask each project manager to read their topic out loud.
Then the teacher will tell the students that materials are supplied, like the posters, markers, crayons,
glue, catalogs, and pamphlets. The same project manager will be able to go and get whatever they may
need from the materials desk. The students should also be made aware that only one cell phone per
group can be out. For every time, more than one cellphone is seen, 2 points will be deducted from
everyones project grade in their group. The teacher will answer any questions the students might have.
This will take about 11 minutes.
The students can now begin their projects. The teacher will walk around the classroom and
answer any questions a group may have about the project or their topic. It is necessary that the teacher
should be aware that this project made need to split into 2 lessons or be given for homework. The
students should also be made aware of this. The students will complete this for 17 minutes.
For the last 3 minutes, students will clean up. If the students finish they can set the poster on the
materials desk. However, if their project is not completed students may be given extra time in the next
class period to complete project or they can take it home. The group is still held accountable for every
participating. The poster will also be presented in class. Presentation should last no longer than 6
minutes.
Please see attachment for Topic Sheets. This will serve as a rubric for grading.
EVALUATION
This project 80% evaluation to this lesson. The students will be graded on creativity, costs, actual
prices, total prices, and presentation. The remaining 20% will be an exit card that the students will have
to write out whenever they finish their projects, which consists of a 5 sentence paragraph about what
theyve learned about teen pregnancy and the responsibilities of having a baby.
Please see attachment for exit card.
ALTERNATIVE PLAN
The teacher should have sufficient amount of posters and markers for this lesson. If the teacher
forgets to print out extra topic sheets, he/she can write the topics on the board for the students. The
teacher can use tape instead of glue for this project.
This project can also be assigned, strictly as a homework project assignment, if other lessons
have not been taught in a specific timeframe. The same instructions apply and groups can be made
smaller. Students can be given 1-2 weeks to complete this assignment as a homework.
