1. Personal Philosophy of Nursing

a. Concepts
i. Nursing: Just like the crocheted lapghan (an afghan blanket that is just
large enough to cover your lap and legs), nursing is a mix of different
strands that create the whole nurse. Nurses are educators, resource
managers, communicators, leaders, health care providers, support systems,
advocates, and creative/critical thinkers.
ii. Person: The person is an individual who is either in a physical, emotional,
or mental crisis and needs assistance.
iii. Environment: The environment is the community, hospitals, rehab
facilities, and any situation in which a nurse can facilitate healing.
iv. Health: Health is the absence of a crisis (whether physical, mental, or
emotional) and the promotion of wellbeing.
b. What the colors stand for:
i. Pink: kindness
ii. Blue: Old Dominion University
iii. Yellow: joy and happiness
iv. Orange: warmth and creativity
v. White: cleanliness and integrity
c. Nursing Theories & my Philosophy
i. Above all else, nurses must care for their patients and their wellbeing.
Theorists like Boykins and Schoenhofer put this trait front and center in

their theory. For my project, and my own personal view on nursing, I
drew heavily from their theory. I believe that without caring, a nurse is
unable to provide any care to a patient. It is essential that all nurses are
taught caring and use this skill in nursing practice (Li, Yu, Yang, Liu,
2016).

d. Qualities of Practice Environment

i. For my practice environment, Id like to work in a location that
encourages research and growth.
2. Professional Outlook
a. Goal for Nursing Practice
i. The pink thread in my project stands for the brain. Professionally, I would
like to be either a neurological or a psychiatric nurse. After a few years of
practice, Id like to return and get and advanced degree in order to teach.
b. Challenges to Nursing
i. One of the future challenges to nursing will be to adapt to the ever
changing landscape of health care. As more people have access to health
care, there is an increasing number of patients who need medical care.
With nurses handling more patients, there is a risk of tasks falling through
the cracks when time is limited and nurses are under pressure to provide
care to more and more patients. It will be important that all health care
providers are experts in communication so that patient care does not
suffer.
