UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


This lesson is to help students recognize that some things are living and some things are non-living.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Content Learning Goals and Objectives
1. Given a worksheet with four images of living things and four images of non-living things, the student will be able to sort
the images into either living or non-living with a score of three out of four on the rubric.
2. Given a computer and internet access to ToonDoo.com, the student will create a cartoon that sorts images into living and
non-living boxes, with a score of three out of four on the rubric.
3. Given a computer and internet access to Audioboom, the student will create an audio recording of four living sounds and
four non-living sounds, with a score three out of four on the rubric.

Student Participation
The purpose of the lesson is for students to recognize that things can be classified into living and non-living things.
Students will sort living things from non-living things. Students will be using the ToonDoo on the internet to create a
cartoon that has images of living and non-living things. The student will be using Audioboom on the internet to
record sounds of living and non-living things.

Technology Integration
Students will use ToonDoo.com on the internet to create a cartoon that will show four living and four non-living things.
Students will use Audioboom on the internet to create an audio of demonstrating four living sounds and four non-living
sounds. Technology will be integrated to enhance the students ability to recognize that there are living things and nonliving things.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will recognize living things and non-living things and demonstrate a clear understanding that some
things are living and some things are not.
Academic language is not addressed in IDT3600.
We will refer to this lesson created here as we continue to learn more about living and non-living things.
The lesson or technology use will be modified to meet the needs of diverse learners

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


Introduction
I will begin class by bringing in a pet dog. I will explain how there are things that are living and non-living.
I will have a bulletin board in the room that will be titled Living or Non-Living. I will have the bulletin board
divided into two and it will include images of living and non-living things sorted into the different sides.
We will talk about where we see living things and where we see non-living things. I will ask the students to talk
about them and where they see them on a daily basis.
I will give an overview of what we will cover through the next two days, how each day we will learn more things
about living and non-living things.

Procedures
Oral lesson on living things (15 minutes)
Teacher Procedures:
1. After the introduction show the dog again.
2. Ask them if it is living or non-living.
3. Talk about why it is considered a living thing.

Oral Lesson on non-living things (15 minutes)

Student Procedures:
1. Students will raise their hands if they can answer.
2. Students will talk about the animals they may have at
home. They will talk about other living things.

1. Hold a pencil up and ask if it is living or nonliving. Ask the students why it is not living.
2. Show several examples of non-living things. Ask
the students to talk about non-living things.

At the Computer ToonDoo(45 minutes)


Teacher Procedures:
1. Show an example of a ToonDoo created.
2. On the whiteboard demonstrate step-by-step how to
create a ToonDoo.
3. Allow the students to get on the internet and open
up the ToonDoo.
4. Tell them that they will be creating their own
ToonDoo that will represent that they know what
living and non-living things are.
4. Tell them you will go with them step-by-step it
creating the ToonDoo.
5. Give them step-by-step instructions stopping to
assist the students.
6. Allow students to work as a group or individually
once they understand the steps.

Student Procedures:
1. Allow students to ask questions.
2. Students will open the internet and get to the
ToonDoo.
3. Assist students in creating an account if needed.
4. Students will ask questions as they are working on
the ToonDoo.

At the Computer Audioboom(15 minutes)


Teacher Procedures:
1. On the whiteboard demonstrate step-by-step how to
create an audio on Audioboom.
2. Allow the students to get on the internet and open
up Audioboom.
3. Tell them that they will be creating their own audio
lesson that will represent that they know what
living and non-living things are.
4. Tell them that they need to pick four things that are
living and mimic their noise. Then they need to
choose four things that are non-living that make
noise. They need to record the noises.
5. Tell them you will go with them step-by-step it
creating the Audioboom.
6. Give them step-by-step instructions stopping to
assist the students.

Student Procedures:
1. Allow students to ask questions.
2. Students will open the internet and get to
Audioboom.
3. Assist students in creating an account if needed.
4. Students will ask questions as they are working on
the Audioboom.

Student plays their Audioboom for the class (30 minutes)


Teacher Procedures:
1. Tell the students that they will stand in front of the
class and play their Audioboom.
2. Allow the students to get on the internet and open
up Audioboom.
3. Tell them that they will be creating their own audio
lesson that will represent that they know what
living and non-living things are.
4. Tell them that they need to pick four things that are
living and mimic their noise. Then they need to
choose four things that are non-living that make
noise. They need to record the noises.
5. Give them step-by-step instructions stopping to
assist the students.

Student Procedures:
1. Allow students to ask questions.
2. Students will stand in front of the class and play
their Audioboom.
3. Let the class guess what the noises are that the
student created.

Closure
Students will bring in a living or non-living thing as a show-and-tell. They will give an oral presentation about
their thing whether it is living or non-living and why. Students will recognize that some things are living and
some things are non-living.

MODIFICATIONS:
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready
for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
