Chapter 1 Overview

Information in Man-machine
Command
Description

Following information is contained in a man-machine command:

When entering a man-machine command using the

command line mode, the command name and parameter
name are both case insensitive.
The command name and the first parameter name are
separated by :; the parameter name and the parameter
are separated by =; and the previous parameter name and
the next parameter name are separated by ,. And ;
comes on the end.
For example:
2904:1=21,2=2,3=4,4=2,5=3,6=1,7=5,8=1,9=0,10=1,11=
1,12=1,13=1;

Either the command name or the command code can be

entered, or either the parameter name or the parameter
number.
In a command with multiple parameters, either the
parameter names or parameter numbers can be entered.
For example:

SWITCH_PHY_BRD: Phybrdtype =21, LGCBRDTYPE =2,

3=4,4=2,5=3,6=1,7=5,8=1,9=0,10=1,11=1,12=1,13=1;
The parameter can also be entered directly instead of the
parameter name. In this case, you are required to enter all
the parameters.
For example: 2904:21,2,4,2,3,1,5,1,0,1,1,1,1;

To enter or edit a history command, press the up arrow key

at the command line.
If no response is received after a command has been issued
for some time (one minute generally), a message of
command timeout will be returned.

and sub-types.

Enter 12?
The names of all the man-machine command names
starting with 12 are listed.

Enter modify?

ATM

Asynchronous Transfer Mode

ATM is extensively used in current networks, in particular to
transport broadband IP traffic between end customer sites and
the internet.
It is a link layer transport technology in which the data to be
transported (typically an IP data stream) is put into strings
(called cells) each 53 bytes long of which 5 provide the header.
Included in the header is a class of service indicator which allows
cells to be prioritized under congestion conditions. ATM cells can
be multiplexed together into higher capacity links.
ATM technology does not play a major role in 21CN since
Ethernet transport is used instead. It, however, continues to be
used to transport IP streams over the Digital Subscriber Loop
(DSL) systems that convey the broadband traffic over copper
cables between end customer sites and the local BT exchange.

upgrades.

network or electronic communications service

Convergence

Being able to access or send any information - voice, data or

video - using any device at any location.

Data packets

When you receive an email, web-page or data message, it

consists of a stream of digital bits which are grouped into
'packets'. As well as the bits containing the information, each
packet has a 'header' that tells the network equipment the
address to which it is going, the length of the packet and its
number in the sequence of packets making up the complete
message or page.

DSL

Digital Subscriber Line

DSL is the broadband technology most commonly used by BT
and other incumbent operators around the world to connect end
user customer sites to the network. It has been described as
'turbo-charging' the phone line. It works by using frequency
bands that are normally left unused in a copper pair - but which
can be used to transmit digital data. At the customer's end, the
computer is plugged into a special kind of modem - a 'DSL
modem'. The connections from the modem and the ordinary
telephone are then connected to a 'splitter' which enables both
to be used on the same line. The DSL technology family includes
ADSL - asymmetric DSL; SDSL - symmetric DSL and VDSL very high-speed DSL.

DSLAM

Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer

A device normally locate at the local exchange building that
takes several broadband DSL lines and combines them together
on one high speed connection to the internet.

Ethernet

58

Ethernet's roots are as a transport protocol linking computers,

servers, printers, and routers that make up Local Area Networks
(LANs). However, Ethernet's simplicity and flexibility make it an
attractive technology in place of ATM for backhaul links.

IP

Internetworking Protocol
The set of communication protocols which enable computers to
'talk' to each other over the internet
IP chops up the data - whether an email, a web-page, or a
picture - into packets or datagram. Each 'packet' of information
contains both the sender's internet address and the receiver's
address. This allows the packets to reach their intended
destination or, if necessary, to be returned to the sender.

Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network

A private network, normally for business use, that comprises a
partition of a large IP-based network allowing flexible support for
both voice and data services.

ISDN

Integrated Services Digital Network

An end-to-end 64Kbit/s and N x 64Kbit/s digital service provided over the switched infrastructure used for PSTN.

A frame located at every exchange building that enables the

MGC software

A media gateway is a device that converts the transport

protocols of the media (voice, data, video) between different
types of telecommunications networks such as PSTN; next
generation networks and mobile networks. For example, a VoIP
media gateway performs the conversion between TDM voice and
VoIP.
See MML.

See MGCP.

Media Gateway Controller software

Generic term used for the Cisco PGW 2200 PSTN Gateway
software when both call control and signaling applications apply.

MGCP

MGH

Media Gateway Control Protocol. The Media Gateway Control

Protocol is based on a merging of the IPDC and SGCP protocols.
Media Gateway Host
Device which physically contains the Media Gateway (that is,
MGX is a Media Gateway Host, VISM is the corresponding Media
Gateway). MGH and MG are sometimes used interchangeably,
depending on the context and device being referenced.

MGW

Media Gateway
Generic term used for the Gateway between QoS Packet
Network and the PSTN/ISDN. There are three types of gateways:
the Trunking Gateway, the Access Gateway, and the Network
Access Server or "Non-Voice" Gateway. Media Gateways are
termination points for the Media Gateway Control Protocol.
Media Gateways terminate MGCP links.

QoS

Quality of Service
Quality of Service applies to a wide range of parameters that
determines how a user perceives a network service. It includes
the following factors - availability; congestion; delay; jitter and
bandwidth.
In the context of IP services QoS implies prioritizing network
resources against pre-determined classifications of traffic. The
lowest classification is 'best effort' which is used by the public
internet. Session-based QoS is used to improve the delivery of a
flow or application session to an end user or users and allows a
particular application session to be distinguished from other
traffic being received by the same user.

Router

SDH

A piece of network equipment that routes IP packets based on

the address information contained in the packet header.
Synchronous Digital Hierarchy
A transmission network technology that enables the multiplexing
and switching of bit pipes at a number of discrete bit rates from
2.3Mbit/s to multiples of 150Mbit/s. The bit pipes are
multiplexed for transmission over optical fiber bearers at bit
rates from 155Mbit/s to 40Gbit/s

Signaling
Gateway

SIP

62

A signaling gateway is a device that translates signaling

messages (ie information about call sessions) between one
medium (usually IP) and another (PSTN). For example, a
signaling gateway translates between traditional voice telephony
signaling and SIP. A signaling gateway is often part of a call
server in VoIP networks.
