3. Calculate international freight and other shipment


costs
The student has investigated and reported for international

volume to weight ratio factors,
volume rules including rounding off and allowable projections,
principles and methods of rating cargo
taken into account variations in calculating shipping charges
and other variants.
The student has researched and reports on variations in airfreight
charges caused by the applicability of TACT rates, fuel surcharges
and other variants. The student has explained how the exchange
rate affect exports.
The student has provided a costing for sending a 12 kg parcel of
Tim Tams by air from Brisbane to Tokyo using (a) Australia Post and
(b) FedEx. The student has identified the maximum you can send
via air with each of these providers.

The student has calculated and documented all standard and


extraordinary ancillary shipment costs for the cargo on a door-todoor basis.
The student has compared and contrasted the costs of shipping
500kg of Tim Tams and 1000kg of Vegemite from Brisbane to Tokyo
using the 3 air cargo services and 3 shipping services identified in
Step 1.
The student has summarised the total cost concept and all factors

Assessment Description and Requirements


You have recently taken on a Brisbane-based role in a new company as the International
Trade Officer. Your company exports food products to a number of international
destinations. Now, it would like to export its products to Japan. They have hired you to
research the shipping logistics of this new project.
Your company plans to ship 500Kg of Tim Tams and 1000kg of Vegemite to Japan.
Initially, the product will be shipped to Tokyo twice a year. The trading terms are CIF
Tokyo INCOTERMS 2000.

Your first task is to identify and familiarise yourself with services available to the
company for freight movement to Japan. Document your findings in a report to use it as
a reference guide in the future. To complete Step 1, research and document the
following:
1. Identify 3 air cargo services and 3 shipping services operating in and out of
Australia to Japan. (2.1, 2.3)
2. Compare and document the configuration and carrying capacities of 2 types of
aircraft and 2 ocean vessels that go to Japan (2.2, 2.5)
3. Summarise the different shipping services and transport routes offered by the 3 air
cargo services and 3 shipping services. (1.4, 2.4, RS2)
4. Evaluate the conditions and risks of the services and routes then make a
recommendation of the 2 best shipping options you researched, one by sea and

To ensure the safe and compliant shipping of your companys products, cargo must be
properly packed, marked and stowed. For a shipment of 500kg of Tim Tams and 1000kg
of Vegemite, determine the following:
1. Identify and document 5 risks of packing and storing Tim Tams and Vegemite. (3.4)
2. Analyse a range of containers available for international cargo and recommend the
best container for Tim Tams and Vegemite. Explain why the container selected is

Your company is now ready to ship its first order of 500kg of Tim Tams and 1000kg of
Vegemite to Tokyo, Japan. They have chosen your 2 recommended transport services.
Now you must determine and document all of the following international freight and
shipment costs:
1. Investigate and report the types of rates, volume to weight ratio factors, volume
rules including rounding off and allowable projections, principles and methods of
rating cargo for international carriage by sea and air for your cargo. Be sure to take
into account variations in calculating shipping charges and other variants. (4.1,

2. Research and report on variations in airfreight charges caused by the applicability

4. The Japanese buyer has requested an urgent formal trading conference with senior
executives from your company before shipment. Investigate and report the cost of

5. Investigate and report the rating principles and methods used in domestic sea,
road, rail and air. (4.9)
6. For your cargo of 500kg of Tim Tams and 1000kg of Vegemite calculate and
document all standard and extraordinary ancillary shipment costs on a door-todoor basis (4.10)
7. Compare and contrast the costs of shipping 500kg of Tim Tams and 1000kg of
Vegemite from Brisbane to Tokyo using the 3 air cargo services and 3 shipping

8. Summarise the total cost concept and all factors that determine whether your
