Native American History Field Trip Lesson

Grade(s)

3rd

Subject(s)

Social Studies

Length of Lesson

1 hour pre-field trip, 3 Hour Field Trip, 1 hour post field trip

Lesson
Overview/Rationale

By studying cultural artifacts at the DIA, students can gain an

understanding of how Native Americans made and make use of their
natural resources. Because the DIA includes many other examples of
artifacts, they can compare and contrast what they find in the Native
American section with the various other artifacts at the DIA. They will
then create a diagram of what they learned using kidspiration.

Curriculum
Framework/Standard

3 H3.0.4 Draw upon traditional stories of American Indians (e.g., Anishinaabeg

- Ojibway (Chippewa), Odawa (Ottawa), Potawatomi; Menominee; Huron
Indians) who lived in Michigan in order to make generalizations about their
beliefs.
3 H3.0.5 Use informational text and visual data to compare how American
Indians and settlers in the early history of Michigan adapted to, used, and
modified their environment.

Procedure

Before the Museum

Introduce the idea of a compare and contrast
graphic in class.
Show 4 examples that would fit into a rubric on
a 1-4 scale, and discuss what makes each successive one better at
tables and in a whole group
Inform the students that they will be completing
their own compare and contrast graphic in class.
At the museum
Bring everybody to the Native American section
of the DIA.
Students are separated into groups and assigned
a particular class of objects including : ceramics, clothing,
cooking tools, stone statues, transportation, and painting
As a whole group, do an example with warfare
items, taking a picture and looking at the features that we studied
in class.
Walk over to the next gallery and do the same
thing, comparing and contrasting the Native American piece with
the other cultures piece.
Walk back to the Native American gallery.
Make sure everybody can find an example of what theyre
working with. Monitor them as they begin.
Allow students with chaperones to go
throughout the museum and find other examples, filling in their
compare and contrast worksheet.
After the museum
Go through creating an A+ example with the
kids in the computer lab. The kids do as you do for the first
compare and contrast example. They then finish the assignment,
using their own research from the museum

Assessment

The completed graphic will be assessed on a Rubric based on organization

of the photo essay, analysis of the Native American item, analysis of the
other items, and comparing and contrasting the Native American items to
the other items.
