the Ghostbusters. Heck,
everyone knows. Thats why
any remake of the 1984
paranormal classic is bound
to disappoint. Kristen Wiig,

scientists who, yes, believe
in ghosts. After a slimy
encounter in a haunted mansion, they form a business
and get to work with a recruit
(Leslie Jones), a himbo
assistant (a hilarious Chris
Hemsworth) and a plan to

the films problems have
nothing to do with the stars:
They are gleeful comedic
wonders able to strap on
proton packs and ogle
Hemsworth with aplomb.
However, they are forced to
carry a lazy script that takes
forever to get going. It leads
to a nonsensical climax,
which, in all fairness, isnt
any more ridiculous than
the Stay Puft Marshmallow
Man stomping around NYC.
Yet how telling that the
biggest laughs are throwback winks to the original.
After all, old-fashioned
bustin will always make us
feel good.

as always, its sleek yet depressing. In an ultracivilized society,
feelings are a big no-no. If you
develop just a trace of emotion,
youre considered diseased. So
when colleagues Silas (Nicholas
Hoult) and Nia (Kristen Stewart)
become attracted to each other,
they must hide their desire. The
premise intrigues, yet the pair dont
quite share the passion required
for the roles. An entrancing
sitting-in-a-planetarium musical
score booms in all their scenes
presumably to overcompensate
for the lack of heat.

alone, this flitty drama would win
Best Picture. For a Woody Allen film,
however, a glamorous visage is not
enough. In the golden age of Hollywood in the 1930s, an NYC transplant
(Jesse Eisenberg) goes to work for his
mogul uncle, Phil (Steve Carell), and
falls hard for Phils secretary (Kristen

Stewart). His advances are to no avail,

as shes already in love with her married
boss. Back in New York, he runs his
brothers jazz club and romances a new
girl (Blake Lively, underused). Not
only is the plot dusty a middle-aged
guy having an affair with a younger
woman is as common in an Allen
project as a C-3PO appearance is in a
Star Wars flick the pacing is slow and
clumsy. Its a sad day when an iconic
auteur hits so many bum notes.
