Convocation

The College of Nursing student council spearheaded the annual College Convocation
2016 last June 16, 2016 held at Juanito Bruno Gymnasium. The College of Nursing Convocation
is one of the colleges proudest traditions and is the highlight event to welcome the new
academic year. It is an avenue to welcome the new students and faculty as the institution revels
upon the spirit of solidarity and coming together for innovation and advancement.
The event is the kick start affair for the college and is focused on welcoming the
freshmen, orienting them to the college rules and policies as well as acquainting them to the
college administrators, faculty, personnel and familiar faces they will be seeing all school year
round. It also serves as a re-orientation for the students from the higher levels.
The convocation started off with an opening remarks from the College of Nursing Dean,
Dr. Nursia M. Barjose, welcoming each and every one to the school year with a spirit of
positivity. In lieu with the event, an inspirational message was also given by the University Vice
President, Dr. Maria Carla Ochotorena. It was then followed by an orientation to the Colleges
policies by the college counselor Maam Josefa Andrea Pizarro. The event also showcased the
different College of Nursing uniforms to be utilized in different clinical areas. The event also
featured the Colleges various organizations through its organization fair happening
simultaneously with the event. The fair aims to encourage the students to involve themselves in
extra-curricular activities in line with their interests and skills. The event wrapped up with a
closing remarks from the Colleges associate dean, Maam Maria Aileen Fernando.

Election
The College of Nursing student council fore-fronted the conduct of the annual election in
the college last July _ 2016. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which the university
student council operated since then. University wide elections fill the offices in College student
council as well as the University student council both in the main and external studies unit.
College of nursing students served as volunteers during the conduct of the election,
headed by College of nursing faculty, they served as the electoral body during the ballot counting
to ensure fair and bias free electoral results.
Mini-Palaro
The College of nursing College student council, as the leading organization in the
college, promotes student welfare and development, conducts activities and programs annually to
give avenues to students with potentials. In line with this, the College of nursing Student Council
headed by their adviser Prof. Claire Ongchua, conducted the CN Fandom wars 2016 also
known as the Nursing Palaro, last ______ 2016

As part of its yearly line up of activities, it is an occasion that is committed to providing


the students with an insight to highly competitive sports and to opportunities that students and
faculties alike can get involved in both social and academic facets. Furthermore, the event also
focuses upon giving the students prospects to exercise their passion in extracurricular activities
and the affirmative development of camaraderie among students and faculty members.
Day 1 of the CN fandoms wars was filled with excitement as the event kicked off with an
extravagant parade by the students. The significant lighting of the torch was also done by Angelo
Arquiza, a four year athlete of the college of nursing. The students from different year levels
bore costumes fit into the fandom that they have chosen. The different fandoms were House of
Harry Potter (level 1), House of greek mythology (level 2), House of wonderland (level 3),
House of Avatars (level 4). Day 1 also featured a talent competition by the gorgeous candidates
of the search for Mr and Ms Nursing 2016.
Day 2 of the CN Fandom wars kicked off by indoor and outdoor sports events
participated by the college of nursing students. Despite the downfall of rain, the students
gleefully took part in the various sports events. Day 2 also featured a musical day spearheaded
by the Synapse, the chorale group of the college of nursing. The musical day included various
competitions in music and the arts such as solo singing competition, duet competition,
instrumental competition and pop dance competition.
On the final day of the CN fandom wars, the sports events were on their final leg. The
search for Mr and Ms Nursing was also underway with the pageant as a highlight event of the 3day festivity. Each year level had their representatives for the search and the winners of the
pageant represented the College in the Search for Mr and Ms University 2016.
Carl Louis Aranas and Milamay Montallana, both from level IV College of Nursing, took
home the bacon after being proclaimed as Mr. and Ms. Nursing 2016 last August 6, 2016 at the
WMSU gymnasium.
In addition, Montallana also grasped several special awards, such as Ms Photogenic, Ms
Peoples choice award, best in School Uniform, Ms Congeniality and Ms MSE. She also hailed
as Best in talent for the talent competition which was held last August 4, 2016 at the WMSU
open stage. Montallana showed immense grace and experience as she also joined last years
search for Mr and MS Nursing Frolics and bagged 1st runner up. She ranked first followed by
Ms. Shendyana Sierra Jaafar (level II) placing as 1st runner-up and Laiza Baral (level III) placing
as 2nd runner-up.
Crowned as Mr. Nursing, Mr. Carl Louis Aranas, like Ms. Montallana, garnered most of
the major awards: Mr Photogenic, Mr Peoples choice award, Mr MSE, Best in school uniform,
Best in production number and Best in Talent. Though with less experience in pageants as this
was his first competition, he became the instant favorite of the crowd as he displayed confidence
in the different categories of the competition. He bagged the crown followed by Emric James
Asuncion (level II) ranking as 1st runner-up Cary John Pioc (level III) ranking as 2nd runner-up.
Also from the, level I Samir Edding ranked 3rd runner up and also garnered Best in Jeans Wear
attire.

Moreover, Mr Asuncion of Level II grabbed Mr Babyface award Mr Pioc from Level III also
grabbed several special awards such as Mr Congeniality and Best in Fandom attire. Ms Laiza
Baral also from level III, grabbed the Best in Fandom attire for the female category.
Furthermore, the event was graced by Ms. Jane Aguillon, as one of the panel of judges. Mr.
Federico Rodriguez, a famed designer and couturier was also present as the chairman of the
board of judges. Mr Ahmadjan Musa and Ms Yvonne Napao completed the set of judges that
adjudged our new title holders.
WMSU Palaro
THE annual weeklong sportsfest of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), this year
dubbed as the WMSU Palaro, reeled off last ____ at the WMSU grounds with an opening
program and field demonstration.
A parade in campus preceded the opening ceremony. WMSU President Dr. Milabel Ho also
lead the university officials in the ceremonies. A field demonstration and unveiling of the
fighting crimsons and official log of the Palaro climaxed the opening rites. Also gracing the
ocassion were the newly-crowned Mr. and Miss WMSU 2016 with Mr WMSU as Mr Carl Louis
Aranas of the College of Nursing.
Aside from the athletic competitions, the Palaro will included contests in dancesport and
popular dance, cheer dance, bodybuilding, and mountain biking. Cultural competition events
are in visual arts, essay writing, oratory, debate, extemporaneous speech and musicmaking.
The Palaro theme is From GOOD to GREAT: A Celebration of Teamwork and Excellence
through Sports.
The sports and cultural contests form part of the education and wholistic development of
WMSU students, including the inculcation of sportsmanship, interpersonal relations, moral
formation, and healthy lifestyles.

Boodle Fight
The College of Nursing student council spearheaded the conduct of the College boodle
fight last September 9, 2016. Sometimes known as a kamayan, the tradition has been going
around the college because of its tasty roots implanted within the Filipino tradition as a highly
social form of communal eating. Rows of green banana leaves were laid down atop long,
banquet-style tables. A blanket of steamed white rice was spread on top, followed by layers of
traditional Filipino dishes. The sumptuous meal was participated by the College of Nursing
administrators and faculty members, college of nursing student leaders and volunteers and
athletes.

The boodle fight served as a wrapping up event for the College of nursing athletes who
bore the name of the College in the course of the arduous 5 day sports events during theWMSU
palaro. It aimed to promote solidarity in the institution as it continuously targets to be a center of
excellence not only in the university but also in the ASEAN region.
Peace something
Unilab Foundation Event
The Western Mindanao State University College of Nursing in collaboration with
UNILAB foundation conducted a community extension colloquium and a youth health forum
entitled Istorya: Stories of youth in action with the theme Healthy communities, Healthier
Philippines last October 11, 2016 held at College of Nursing AVR.
Istorya is a platform where Filipino youth come together to talk and exchange innovative
ideas on how to solve different public health issues in their community. This is an initiative of the
Unilab foundation to enable the youth to create movements towards building a healthier
Philippines.
The event kicked off with an opening remarks from our very supportive College dean Dr
Nursia M. Barjose. The event was a short yet jam-packed, youth led conversation with four key
components: first off is the public health talks which was delivered by Mr. Abdel Asad Omar
Kanti, a member of the citys disaster management council. Part of the colloquium is also the
youth conversation where participants exchanged concerns and innovative ideas on how they can
solve existing health issues of concern. Next was the introduction to ideas positive and the
workshop proper where the participants were encouraged to write down positive ideas to address
a specific health concern in their target community.
Participants in the event used the ideas positive workshop tools in which upon
completion can be submitted to Ideas positive as an entry. Submitted entries will have a chance
to receive a maximum of php 100,000 seed money for project implementation. The event closed
off with a closing remarks from the College of nursing Coordinator for Extension and
community involvement, Dr. Miriam O. Kanti.

15th national & 1st international ADPCN


The Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Nursing, Inc. held its 1st
International Conference on Nursing Education, 57th Annual Convention and General Assembly
and the 15th National Conference for Nursing Students last October 6-7, 2016 at the Manila
Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, Manila with the theme, Borderless Nursing Education: Relevance,
Innovations and Engagement.
In lieu with the said event, Level IV students from the College of nursing namely Julius
Matthew Luzana, Maria Ann Grace Samaco, Angelo Arquiza, Jehanna Mar Abdurahman (BSN
IV-A) and Rozelle Cabato (BSN IV-B) represented the region and the country during its conduct.

In addition, Jehanna Mar Abdurahman, a BSN IV student delivered a presentation of their


accomplished research entitled factors affectings self-esteem among 4th year nursing students.
This conference was a venue for nurse educators, administrators, researchers, clinicians,
and undergraduate/graduate nursing student to share expert knowledge on relevant updates and
trends related to nursing education and to disseminate research findings in nursing education and
practice. The conference provided numerous opportunities for academic and information
exchange, international and national collaboration and networking in nursing education and
research.
