Manual for

Serving
the
Tridentine
Mass

Revised edition June 3, 2012

PRELIMINARY NOTES
When there are two altar boys, the one on the R side of the altar is
sometimes called the Bell; the one on the L side is sometimes called the
Book. This booklet is designed for two servers at Mass. In case of a single
server, his position will be on the lowest step of the altar, on the side
opposite of where the altar Missal is placed.
Key:

E-side = the Epistle side, or the right side of the altar. It is also the
Bell side.

G-side = the Gospel side, or the left side of the altar. it is also the
Book side.

sedilia = the three-seated bench where the priest sits between two altar
boys.

biretta = the priests hat with 3 fins and a pom-pom at the top.

L = left

R = right

P = priest

A = altar boy
The Sanctus bells should always be put out on the E-side, near the servers
kneeling pad.
Canon = The Eucharistic Prayer.
Before High Mass, the altar Missal should be placed open and on the Missal
stand at the E-side of the altar. For a Low Mass the Missal should be closed
with its cut pages facing the G-side.
Lighting the altar candles:

For a High Mass, light only the 6 large candles.

For a Low Mass, light only the 2 tabernacle candles.

3

Order of lighting the candles:

First the E-side, then the G-side.

For lighting 6 candles: Begin with the E-side candles nearest the
tabernacle and work outward. Then light those on the G-side, also with
the candles nearest the tabernacle working outward.
Servers may assist vesting the priest, if they know how to do this by

holding the cincture behind him (with the doubled open end on the
right)

holding the stole for him while the priest takes the alb
Responses are recited in a Low Mass but sung with the choir and people for
a High Mass.

If there is an Asperges or Vidi Aquam, the sacristy card (or book) with
the sprinkling rite is put on the middle center altar steps, a little to the
R side.

Step 1: The Beginning of Mass

On Sundays, the Asperges (the rite of sprinkling) opens the High Mass.
See the end of this booklet, pg. 23, to learn how this is done.

The Book standing nearest the sacristy door and the Bell standing next
to him, bow with the priest towards the sacristy crucifix, turn, and, walking
ahead of the priest, with their hands folded, go to the door. They take some
holy water with their fingertips of the RH. The Bell, walking just in front
of the priest, should offer holy water to him from his own hand. They bless
themselves as they enter the sanctuary. The Book should ring the
sanctuary bell.

Coming to the altar, the Book passes the altars center to stand at the
altar step on the G-side; the Bell stands at the E-side. (If there is only one
server, he stands on the E-side.) When the priest hands the Bell the
biretta, the server takes hold of it by the nearest peak in his RH with his LH
underneath it. The servers genuflect on the floor with the priest.
The Bell goes to the sedilia and places the biretta there and returns to his
place before the altar. They kneel on the floor as soon as the priest begins
the sign of the cross. (If one server: after putting away the biretta, he
genuflects before the middle of the altar, turns L, goes to the G-side, and
kneels when the priest comes down from the altar.) They make the sign of
the cross with the priest as he begins the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar.

The servers stand and lift the priests alb as he ascends the steps. Servers
then kneel on the lowest step.
Step 3: From the Introit to the Collect
For the Sunday High Mass, the thurifer (and boat bearer) go up the steps
at the E-side where incense is put in by the priest. The thurifer (with the
boat bearer) descends the side steps (taking the boat with him) and waits
at the bottom, facing the G-side. Once the priest has incensed the Crucifix,
the thurifer goes up to the platform and takes the altar Missal and its
stand. Turning R, he goes down the steps carrying the Missal stand and
turns facing the G-side. He waits there until the E-side of the altar has
been incensed. When the priest moves after incensing the E-side, the Missal
is replaced at the Epistle corner. The thurifer returns to the floor. When
the priest has finished the incensing, the thurifer takes the thurible from
the priest. The thurifer descends the steps again, turns R toward the priest,
bows to him, and incenses him with 3 double swings. He bows to him once
again. The thurifer then puts the thurible away.
Except for a Requiem Mass, servers make the Sign of the Cross with the
priest as he begins the Introit and they bow to the Crucifix when the priest
bows at the Gloria Patri.
When the priest has finished, he and the servers say the Kyrie in dialogue.

The Gloria (which is sometimes omitted) is said by the priest.

If the priest is to leave the altar during the singing:
the servers stand when he makes the sign of the cross at the words Cum
Sancto Spiritu and meet in the middle, shoulders together. They go with
him to the sedilia. The Bell takes the priests biretta from the sedilia
and holds it. Both servers assist in extending the chasuble so it will not
become wrinkled when the priest sits. The Bell hands the priest his
biretta. With their hands folded, they face the priest, bow to him, then
bow to each other and sit, placing their hands on their lap. If the priest
uncovers his head during the singing, the servers bow their heads slightly.
When the Gloria is nearly finished, the priest hands the biretta to the
Bell. All servers present stand together. The two at the priests side
bow to him, signaling him to stand. The Bell replaces the biretta on the
sedilia. The servers precede the priest in going to the foot of the altar at
their former places and, together with the priest, they genuflect. As the
priest ascends the altar steps, the servers kneel on the step.
Rule concerning sitting: The priest alone sits, then all sit afterward.
Everyone first stands, then the priest alone stands.

After the Gloria, the priest kisses the altar, and turns towards the people.
He sings and the servers answer:
P. Dminus vobscum.
A. Et cum spritu tuo.
The priest then goes over to the altar Missal and says one or more prayers
called the Collect. At the end of the Collect he says:
P. Per mnia secula sculrum.
A. Amen.
Step 4: The Epistle & Gospel
The priest then silently reads the Epistle in Latin from the Missal while the
reader reads it to the people in English. (The priest may also choose to sing
the Epistle.) To indicate the end of his reading, the priest will drop his left
hand on the altar which signals the servers to say:
A. Deo grtias.
The Book stands, genuflects in the center, and walks to the E-side. He
waits there on the floor until the priest moves away towards the center of
the altar. The Book then goes up the side steps onto the platform, bows,
and takes hold of the Missal stand with both hands. He turns L with the
Missal and obliquely descends the front steps to the floor at the center
where he genuflects. He then obliquely ascends the front steps to the
platform on the G-side. He places the Missal stand on the G-side corner of
the altar, but at a slight angle so that the priest can face a little towards
North when reading the Gospel. The Book then bows towards the cross,
turns L and walks down the side steps to the floor. He turns L and waits
until saying the words, Gloria tibi, Dmine at which he bows, turns R and
returns to stand at his place.
10

For Sunday High Mass: the Book returns to his place after descending
the steps. The thurible is loaded as at the beginning of Mass. The
thurifer then descends the steps and he (or the boat bearer) puts the
boat on the credence. The two candle bearers take their candles from
the credence. The three of them go, with the thurifer in the middle, to
the center in front of the altar steps. They genuflect, and move to the
G-side floor. The thurifer alone ascends the steps, standing on the top
step. The priest takes the thurible and incenses the Missal. The thurifer,
turns R and stands joining the others at the floor, keeping the thurible
swinging gently during the singing of the Gospel. At Laus tibi, Christe
they bow, turn R and go to the center and genuflect. They then return
their accouterments.

When the priest begins singing Dminus vobiscum, all stand.

With the priest, they make the triple sign of the cross: on the forehead, lips
and heart. The Bell should pivot somewhat towards the priest. At the end
of the Gospel, when the priest kisses the Missal they make the response:
A. Laus tibi, Christe.
(Note: unlike the new rite of Mass, the priest does not first say: Verbum
Domini.)

11

Step 5: The Sermon & the Credo

If the Celebrant himself gives a sermon, the servers genuflect with him,
then go to the sedilia and sit. After the sermon, they meet the priest at the
altar floor and genuflect with him.
(If another priest or deacon will preach, the servers genuflect with the
priest and go with him to the sedilia. The procedure for sitting is the same
as given above for the Gloria. At the end of the sermon, they go to the altar
and genuflect together. They kneel at their places on the first step.)
If there is a Credo, the servers kneel during it. If the priest is to leave the
altar during the singing, they stand, genuflect with him and go with him to
the sedilia, following the procedure as given above for the Gloria.
Step 6: The Offertory
When the priest at the altar turns to the people, the servers make the
response:
P. Dminus vobscum.
A. Et cum spritu tuo.
P. Ormus.
The servers stand at Oremus, come to the center, genuflect, and move
towards the credence table to take the cruets. The Bell takes the wine
cruet and the Book takes the water cruet. They place the stoppers on the
table and bring the cruets over to the E-side, holding them in the RH with
the LH on the heart. The cruet handles should be turned outward so that
they will be facing the priest. (If only one server: he takes the wine cruet
in his RH and the water cruet in his LH.) They bow and then ascend the Eside steps and stand on the highest step, facing the priest. The Bell
presents the wine cruet and, when the priest takes it, he holds his hands.
The Book presents the water cruet, which the priest will first bless, and
12

folds his hands. (If you are alone, transfer the water cruet to your RH after
the priest takes the wine; then receive the wine cruet in your LH.) When
both cruets have been received back into their hands, the servers turn and
go down the steps, bow to the priest and return the cruets to the credence
table, replacing the stopper on the wine cruet only.
At the credence table, the Book takes the finger towel. The Bell takes
the water cruet in his RH, holding it with the handle in his fingers, and he
takes the levabo dish in his LH. (If you are alone, drape the finger towel
over your left arm, take the levabo dish in your LH and the water cruet in
your RH, holding it by the handle.)
They go to the E-side at the floor, bow, and ascend the steps again. The
Bell holds the dish under the priests hands, pours water over his fingers
and the Book presents him with the finger towel. When the priest has
returned the finger towel, they turn, go down the steps, and bow towards
the priest. Them they go to the credence to replace the cruet, dish and
towel. The water cruet is covered with the stopper. The servers then return
to the center of the altar, genuflect together, turn outwards, and go to
kneel at the k neeling pads.

13

For Sunday High Mass: thurifer (with boat bearer) comes as before to the
altar on the E-side and goes to the priest for the loading of the thurible.
When the priest begins incensing the altar, the thurifer bows and
descends the E-side. Meanwhile the cross bearer ascends the G-side and
removes the Missal, walking down the steps with it. He turns L and faces
the E-side until the G-side of the altar has been incensed. Then he
replaces the Missal at an angle to where it was. The thurifer ascends the
steps to receive the thurible and incenses the priest, the other servers
and the people. The thurifer then goes near the torchbearers.

The priest turns towards the people and says:

P. Orte, fratres...
The priest turns back towards the altar, saying the rest of his words quietly.
When he has completely turned around to the altar, the servers make a
medium bow and say out loud together:
A. Suscpiat Dminus sacrifcium de mnibus tuis, *
ad laudem et glriam nminis sui, *
ad utilittem quoque nostram, *
totisque Ecclsi su sanct.
They kneel upright.
For a Sunday High Mass, the torchbearers genuflect at su sanct
and leave to take their torches. After the incensing of the people, the
torchbearers come out, genuflect and go to stand at their kneeling
positions. They will kneel as soon as the Sanctus begins.

14

Step 7: The Secret, Preface & Sanctus

The priest quietly prays the Secret Prayer. At the end, he sings:
P. Per mnia secula sculrum.
A. Amen.
While the servers remain kneeling, the priest continues:
P.
A.
P.
A.
P.
A.

Dminus vobscum.
Et cum spritu tuo.
Sursum corda.
Habmus ad Dminum.
Grtias agmus Dmino Deo nostro.
Dignum et justum est.

The priest sings the Preface aloud. At the end, he bows low and says the
Sanctus at which the Bell immediately rings the bell three times.
P. Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, etc.
The two servers, with folded hands, remain kneeling for the Canon which
the priest prays in secret.
For the Sunday High Mass: At the start of the Sanctus, the thurifer leads
the torchbearers out. Together they genuflect in the center of the
sanctuary and they go to their places and kneel immediately. The
thurifer goes to the E-side of the altar and kneels there. When the bell
rings for the Hanc igitur, the thurible is loaded. The thurifer will incense
the Sacred Species in the usual way from this side position. The thurifer
genuflects and puts the thurible away in the sacristy and goes to his
place. The torchbearers remain kneeling. on the steps.

15

Step 8: The Canon

When the priest lays his hands over the offerings for the prayer Hanc igitur,
the Bell rings the warning bell one time. Bell places the bells up on the
platform. Both servers stand, meet at the center, genuflect and ascend the
center altar steps, kneeling on the platform on either side of the priest.
When the priest genuflects, they bow, the bell is rung, and both servers lift
the end of the priests chasuble as he raises the Host (the Bell rings with
his RH and lifts with his LH; the Book lifts the chasuble with his RH,
putting his LH on his heart). The servers look at the Host as they hold the
chasuble up slightly. They bow and ring the bells again as the priest
genuflects; they drop the chasuble. These actions are repeated for the
consecration of the chalice.
(If you are alone, take the bell, go to the middle, genuflect, ascend the
center steps and kneel on the platform at the priests right. Bow, ringing
the bells with the RH, while taking the chasuble in the LH; the rest is as
described above.)
The servers stand, turn towards each other and descend the steps,
genuflect, and return to kneel at their places. The Bell again brings the
bells down near his side.
After the priest says several prayers quietly, he sings aloud:
P. Per mnia secula sculrum.
A. Amen.
The torchbearers stand, genuflect, and go to their places in the sanctuary.

16

Step 9: The Pater Noster to the Communion

Book and Bell and torchbearers remain kneeling; the others stand while
the priest sings the Pater noster which ends:
P. Et ne nos indcas in tentatinem.
A. Sed lbera nos a malo.
Now the others servers kneel. The priest again prays quietly and then sings
aloud:
P.
A.
P.
A.

Per mnia secula sculrum.

Amen.
Pax Dmini sit semper vobscum.
Et cum spritu tuo.

When the priest genuflects, the Bell gets the patens. For the Agnus Dei,
with the open fingers of the right hand, the servers strike the breast three
times: at the words, miserre nobis, (two times) and at dona nobis pacem
(the third time). The priest then quietly says some prayers. The Bell then
rings the bell three times, once each time, as the priest says, Domine non
sum dignus.
During the Agnus Dei the bell goes to the credence to get the Communion
patens and he gives one to the Book. When the priest drinks from the
chalice, the Bell rings the bell once, stands with the Book, both
genuflect and go up to kneel on the altar platform at the places where they
were at the Elevation. Each holds a paten under his chin to receive Holy
Communion and under the chins of the others there. (Note: they do not say
Amen upon receiving Holy Communion.)

17

The priest turns to the people and says:

P. Ecce Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccta mundi.
The following response is said three times while the servers three times
strike their breast:
A. Dmine, non sum dignus,
ut intres sub tectum meum,
sed tantum dic verbo,
et sanbitur nima mea.
They walk behind the priest(s) to the Communion rail and hold the paten
under the chin of the communicants at the altar rail.
For the Sunday High Mass: after they receive Communion, the
torchbearers take their torches and stand in formation at either side of
the entrance to the sanctuary. They face towards the center but with
eyes cast down so as to avoid looking at each other or at the people.

Step 10: After Communion to the End of Mass

After the last communicant, the priest should take the patens from the
servers. If not, they should put the patens on the altar near the middle. The
Book and Bell go to the credence table to take the wine and water
cruets. They should hold them with the handles toward themselves. They
genuflect at the side steps on the E-side, and ascends the steps, kneeling on
the top step until the priest has consumed the Precious Blood and has closed
the tabernacle. Then they stand. As the priest extends the chalice, the
server with the wine goes towards the priest and pours some wine into the
chalice until the priest lifts it a little to indicate for him to stop pouring.
(The server must be careful not to touch the chalice with the wine cruet.)
He then bows to the priest, and returns standing with the other server on
the first step of the E-side. When the priest comes towards them with the
18

chalice, first a little wine is poured over the priests fingers (he will raise
the chalice as a signal to stop pouring) and then some or even all of the
water is poured. They bow to the priest, turn around, and go to the
credence table to put the cruets on it.
When they have finished pouring both the wine and the water, the Book
goes to the G-side, ascends the steps, bows and takes the Missal stand in
both hands. He descends obliquely to the foot of the steps at the middle,
genuflects, and goes up obliquely to the E-side corner of the altar and places
the Missal stand where it was at the beginning of Mass. Then he turns R and
descends the steps, bows and goes to the middle, genuflects and goes to
kneel at his place. The Bell goes from the credence to the altar floor at
the middle, genuflects, and goes to kneel at his place.
Meanwhile, the Bell goes to the E-side, ascends the steps, bows, and, with
both hands, takes the chalice veil from the altar. He descends the middle
steps obliquely but only after the Book has left the foot of the altar. The
Bell genuflects, and ascends the steps obliquely towards the G-side and
places the veil to the R of the corporal. He then bows, turns L, descends the
steps on the G-side, and goes to the middle of the front steps. He should
genuflect (at the same time as the Book if possible) and return to his
place and kneel.
The priest goes to the Missal and reads the Communion Proper. When he
returns to the center, he kisses the altar and turns to the people and sings:
P. Dminus vobscum.
A. Et cum spritu tuo.

19

The priest then says or sings the Post Communion Prayer. At the end of it he
says:
P. Per mnia secula sculrum.
A. Amen.
The priest then closes the Missal, and turning again to the people, sings:
P.
A.
P.
A.

Dminus vobscum.
Et cum spritu tuo.
Ite, missa est. (Or sometimes he says instead: Benedicmus Dmino.)
Deo grtias.
Note: For a Requiem Mass, instead of Ite, missa est, this is said:
P.
A.

Requisant in pace.
Amen.

The priest again turns towards the altar to invoke God for the blessing. The
priest then turns to the people. As he blesses them, the servers make the
sign of the cross:
P. Pater, et Flius, a et Spritus Sanctus.
A. Amen.
They stand immediately. The priest will move to the G-side to read the Last
Gospel.
20

P.

P.

When the priest signs himself with the triple cross, the servers should do so
also, on the forehead, lips, and heart. When the priest genuflects during the
Last Gospel, the altar boys genuflect with him. After the genuflection, the
Bell immediately goes to the sedilia to take the biretta and he brings it
back with him to his place.
At the end of the Last Gospel, they make the response:
P. ...plenum grti et verittis.
A. Deo grtias.
The Bell hands the priest the biretta when the priest comes down to the
altar floor. The servers genuflect with
him; they turn R and walk into the sacristy in front of him.
For the Sunday High Mass: the thurifer leads the other servers and the
torchbearers for the recessional out of the sanctuary down the main
aisle after they first have genuflected with the priest.

If the priest is celebrating a private Mass (with only one server), the Leonine
Prayers are to be said by both priest and server.

21

In the sacristy, they bow to the crucifix with the priest.

P. Prosit.
A. Pro mnibus et sngulis.
They may help the priest divest.
They extinguish the candles on the altar, starting with the one furthest
from the crucifix on the G-side; then at the farthest on the E-side.
They bring in the cruets.
They may not touch the chalice or the priests microphone.
In the altar boy sacristy, they hang their cassocks and surplices neatly.
They should go into the church and make a thanksgiving after Holy
Communion.

22

For Sundays: The Asperges (or Vidi Aquam, in Easter Season)

The sacristy card or book with the Asperges rite is put on the middle center
altar steps, a little to the R side.
After the priest has blessed the water in the sacristy, the Bell (or the
thurifer) carries the stoup with the aspergil in it at the height of his waist in
his RH; his LH on his heart. Behind him the two candle-bearers follow, the
torchbearing servers (but without their torches), and the celebrant vested in
the cope. They enter the sanctuary and ring the bell.
No holy water is taken to make the sign of the cross upon entering the church
since the rite of sprinkling is to follow.
The stoup-bearer goes to the foot of the altar where he will be nearest the
priests L side. The Bell stands at the foot of the altar, to the priests R
side. The priest removes his biretta and gives it to the Bell The Book and
Bell genuflect with the priest. Candle-bearers bring their candles to the
credence table; the cross bearer puts the cross in the sacristy. The Bell
brings the biretta to the sedilia and returns to the altar step.
The priest and the two servers kneel with him at the altar step. The stoupbearer holds the stoup with the aspergil towards the priest so that he can
easily grasp it. The priest sings Asperges me (or in Paschaltide Vidi
aquam) and he alone stands at first, sprinkling the altar, himself, and the
two servers at his sides. Then the servers at the altar stand and genuflect
with the priest. The servers then turn around with the priest towards the Gside in such a way that the stoup-bearer will now be on the priests R side
and the Bell will be on the priests L side. Both servers take hold of the
edges of the priests cope with their inside hands. The Bell puts his LH on
his heart. The priest will sprinkle first the servers on the G-side and then go
down towards the people. The priest sprinkles them, with the servers walking
just a little behind the priest, but not so much as to slow his movements. The
priest sprinkles the people on both sides, alternating from side to side, as he
23

walks down the aisle.

When the choir sings the Gloria Patri, the servers stop and release the
edges of the cope. They with the priest turn to face the altar and bow
towards it. Then they resume the sprinkling, again taking the edges of the
cope. At the end of the main aisle, the servers release the cope edges and
cross sides so that each server is now on the opposite side of the priest. They
again take the copes edges and return with the priest to the altar.
They do not genuflect upon entering the communion gate, but go to the
servers on the E-side where the priest will sprinkle them.
Going to the foot of the altar, they genuflect and then stand. The stoupbearer receives the aspergil from the priest. The Bell, taking the sacristy
card or book in hand when he rises from genuflecting, holds this book (or
card) for the priest to sing the prayer. They genuflect together. The priest
and the Bell go to the sedilia. All other servers may sit until the priest
