Resolved Issues
The following has been resolved in this release.
Key

rn summary

MG-10469 The Linux FSD may cause a kernel crash in cases where many threads or processes are
simultaneously reading the same file and where a read timeout occurs due to network, server,
and/or client congestion. This was fixed by reworking the cleanup actions after a read timeout.
MG-10433 The Linux FSD incorrectly logs very long IO times (hundreds of seconds). This was due to code
paths which failed to correctly set the start time which have been fixed.
MG-10360 The Linux FSD may crash the kernel in addSliceEntry() due to a previous zero-length allocation.
A check was added to avoid the zero-length allocation.
MG-10339 In some cases, when accessing files on the Harmonic MediaGrid, if the files were rapidly written,
closed, truncated, then opened and written again with less data, the files were not truncated
correctly.
MG-10228 The Linux FSD sometimes crashed the kernel in 3.X kernel versions. This was due to a logic
problem in filling in kernel "inode" structures which has been corrected.
MG-10047 The Linux FSD causes a kernel crash after mount or during operation due to a memory
corruption problem. This was fixed by increasing the size of a string buffer by one byte.
MG-9797

In some cases, when copying files via CIFS, the Linux FSD client could restart suddenly.

Software Installation Instructions

This section provides a brief description of the software installation process to install and/or upgrade Harmonic
MediaGrid Linux FSD software. See the Harmonic MediaGrid Installation and Configuration Guide for more
thorough software installation instructions.

Verify Kernel Version

Unpack the downloaded zip file. Enter the password provided by Technical Support.
Select the rpm file that matches your distribution (see the list in Compatibility and Packaging for Linux FSD 3.4).
Use the rpm qip command to view the rpm header, for example:

# rpm qip MediaGridFSD-3.4.0.0-20070515_3.4.0.0_1.2142_FC4smp.x86_64.rpm

or (for Ubuntu or
Debian): # dpkg --info mediagridfsd_3.4.0.0-20140512-3.4.0-29-generic_amd64.deb

The last line of the header will contain the kernel version for which the FSD was built. Please verify that your
current kernel matches the version displayed. Use the uname r Linux command to see you kernels version
number. If the kernel version does not match then do not continue. You may have to perform some updates on
your Linux installation to acquire the required kernel version. Contact Omneon Technical Support for further
information.

Verify Linux FSD Version

To identify the Linux FSD version running on a system, use the following command: # sysctl omfs_build_branch
omfs_build_date
This command will display output similar to the following:

omfs_build_branch = 3.4.0.0
omfs_build_date = Mon Jan 26 03:03:09 PST 2015

Installing for the First Time

Before installing Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD software, make sure no application is running on the computer.
1. Use one of the following commands:
For RedHat Fedora, use the rpm i command with the --force option. For example: # rpm ivh --force
MediaGridFSD-3.4.0.0-20070515_2.6.17_1.2142_FC4smp.x86_64.rpm

Harmonic Inc. Confidential

1.
Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD 3.4 Release Notes
For Ubuntu or Debian use: "dpkg --install --force-overwrite
mediagridfsd_3.4.0.0-20140512-3.2.0-29-generic_amd64.deb".
The "--force-overwrite" option replaces the distro-provided omfs.ko module. See the note below.
For all other Linux operating systems you may use the rpm --i command by itself. For example: # rpm
ivh MediaGridFSD-3.4.0.0-20070515_2.6.17_1.2142_FC4smp.x86_64.rpm
2. Please capture the output of this command in case a problem occurs.
3. Once you have installed the rpm file, restart your client computer.

Note
Fedora, SLES, Ubuntu, and Debian distributions provide an "omfs.ko" kernel driver module which
conflicts with the Harmonic Mediagrid kernel driver module of the same name. In most cases, this is
not automatically loaded nor needed. However, you should ensure it is not already in use before
replacing it (for example, the command "lsmod | grep omfs" can be used to determine if it is loaded into
the kernel).

Installation Issues
If the rpm utility complains about a dependency mismatch, particularly about a kernel module, please check the
kernel revision level on the computer against the kernel levels listed above against each distribution. There may
be a mismatch between the kernel that the rpm is built for and the one on the machine. If this is the case, please
contact Harmonic Technical Support for assistance or a revised rpm package.

Upgrading From a Prior Release

Before upgrading the Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD software, make sure:
No application is running on the computer.
All Harmonic MediaGrid file systems are unmounted, using the umount Linux command. If installing the
Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD from a network location, always copy the installation file to a local
directory before beginning the installation.
Any prior releases of the Linux FSD have been unloaded by using the rmmod command: # rmmod omfs
Use one of the following commands to upgrade from a prior release of the Linux FSD. For example:

# rpm Uvh MediaGridFSD-3.4.0.0-20070308_2.6.17_1.2142_FC4smp.x86_64.rpm

or (for Ubuntu or Debian):
# dpkg --install --force-overwrite mediagridfsd_3.4.0.0-20140512-3.4.0-29-generic_amd64.deb

Please capture the output of this command in case a problem occurs. It will help Technical Support in debugging
at a later time.

Mounting a Harmonic MediaGrid File System

Once the Linux FSD is successfully installed or upgraded, the Harmonic MediaGrid Server may now be
mounted. The Harmonic MediaGrid file system is identified as omfs file system type in the mount command.
The following is an example of a mount command:

# mount t omfs /mediagrid/filesys /mnt -o username=username,password=password

The mount command usually loads the Linux FSD module automatically. If it does not, use the modprobe
command to force loading: # modprobe omfs

Operational Notes
Specifying File Buffering
The Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD allows you to configure the number of slice buffers used per file for
read-ahead buffering. The memory used is specified in units of slices, and applies to each file opened for
access. Each slice can be 256KB to 8MB in size. This configuration is done at mount time, using the readahead
option. For example:

# mount t omfs /mediagrid/filesys /mnt \

-o username=username,password=password,readahead=2

This command reserves 2 slices worth of memory for each file that is opened (two slices for read-ahead buffers).
The default readahead value is 3, which reserves 3 slices of memory per file. Reducing these values will
increase the number of simultaneously active files an application can use, but will reduce performance.
Increasing it may improve performance for some workflows.
The currently supported values for readahead are 0 to 50.
The Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD allows you to configure the total number of files open at any time through
the mount time filelimit option. For example:

# mount t omfs /mediagrid/filesys /mnt

o username=username,password=password,readahead=2,filelimit=2000

This command sets the total number of simultaneously open files to 2000. The default filelimit is 1024.

Specifying Number of Write Threads

The number of threads utilized by the module for write requests can be modified when tuning write performance
on the Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD. Increasing the number of threads available for write operations
increases the number of simultaneous transfers to ContentServers. The default value is 12, which is reasonable
for a single gigabit Ethernet NIC.
Increase this value to improve performance on 10 gigabit Ethernet. Note that the value cannot be decreased;
only increased, on a running system. To decrease the value, either reboot the system or unload and reload the
omfs.ko module.

Harmonic Inc. Confidential

Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD 3.4 Release Notes

Increasing the number of write threads increases CPU use by the Linux FSD, which may negatively impact
application performance. For 10 gigabit Ethernet, Omneon recommends values of 8-12 write threads for high
single file write performance. This value would likely not have any impact if writing multiple files simultaneously.
The number of write threads should not exceed the total of the readahead buffer settings (the extra threads
remain idle as no buffers are available for writing).
The sysctl parameter for the number of write threads is omfs_cwthreads. Use the following command to
increase the number of write threads: sysctl omfs_cwthreads=N
Where N is the number of write threads desired. The command is ignored if the number is less than the current
number of write threads.

Memory Usage by the Linux FSD

The Linux FSD allocates all the buffer memory it will use at module load time to avoid making sudden demands
for memory. The gradual increase in memory usage at startup is expected and normal.
If a mount command is issued immediately after loading the omfs module, the command may fail with an error
message indicating Some resources could not be allocated, try again later. Re-issuing the mount command a
few seconds later will result in success. This message indicates that the omfs module has not completed
allocation of memory after loading.
The Linux FSD does not request any large memory allocations while it is operating. The memory allocated at
startup must be sufficient to accommodate the file buffer settings discussed in the sections above. The amount
of memory allocated by the Linux FSD is controlled by the omfs_cache_pre_allocate system control variable.
To modify this parameter use the following command: # sysctl w omfs_cache_pre_allocate=2047
Or insert the following line into the /etc/sysctl.conf file: #omfs_cache_pre_allocate=2047
The value is specified in units of 256KB. The default value is 2047, which is slightly less than 512MB. On a
computer with 1GB RAM there will be 512MB left for other system operations.
The Linux FSD will not release any memory it has acquired. Reducing the omfs_cache_pre_allocate value after
memory has been allocated will have no effect. Since the Linux FSD begins allocating memory as soon as the
omfs module is loaded by the Linux kernel, trying to limit the amount of memory allocated to a value below
512MB using this method will have inconsistent results.
The amount of memory available for reservation by LinuxFSD can be specified at module load time by using the
cachePreAllocLimit module load parameter. The cachePreAllocLimit is specified in units of 256KB and the
default value is 2047 which amounts to 512MB. To limit memory usage below 512MB, set the
cachePreAllocLimit module load parameter to a lower value. For example, when loading the omfs module with
the modprobe command use the following format:

# modprobe omfs cachePreAllocLimit=40

Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD 3.4 Release Notes

This example will limit the Linux FSD to using only 10MB for cache memory. This parameter may also be used
in the /etc/modprobe.conf configuration file. See the Linux documentation for information on the format of this
file.

Setting the Cache Memory Limit

The FSD allocates memory for buffering cache from a single pool. When the FSD exceeds this limit, it begins to
free memory until its usage is below this number. This pool defaults to 200MB on Linux. The default value
should be sufficient for clients with connectivity up to 1GBit/sec. Advanced users, depending on the workflow
and if the clients are capable of higher bandwidth (for example, 10Gigabit), who wish to utilize more bandwidth
might consider increasing this number.

Important!
The default value for this parameter is sufficient in most cases. If you are unsure of whether you should
change it, please contact Technical Support for assistance.

The following format can be used to change this value: echo NNN > /proc/sys/omfs_cache_max_mem_MB
The cache memory limit, shown as NNN, is in Megabytes.
For settings greater than 1000MB, the omfs_cache_allocate_limit should also be increased by 4000 for each
additional MB.

Multiple NIC Support

Multiple NIC usage is turned on through a mount command option. The format is:

# mount t omfs /mediagrid/filesys /mnt/ \

-o username=username,password=password,allnic

Or

# mount t omfs /mediagrid/filesys /mnt/ \

-o username=username,password=password,iflist=[list of interfaces]

Where [list of interfaces] is a colon separated list of Ethernet interfaces. For example:

Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD 3.4 Release Notes

# mount t omfs /mediagrid/filesys /mnt \
-o username=username,password=password,iflist=eth3:eth1:eth5

Instead of listing interface names individually, you can use the allnic option to indicate use of all Ethernet
interfaces on the system.
The Linux FSD performs connection load balancing by inserting routing table entries for each ContentServer
connection. Most Linux kernels ignore routing table entries when NICs are connected to the same subnet. In
order to prevent this kernel behavior from defeating the Linux FSDs connection balancing, the following lines
must be added to the /etc/sysctl.conf file.

net.ipv4.conf.default.arp_ignore = 1
net.ipv4.conf.default.arp_announce = 1

After making these additions, reboot the computer to have them take effect.

Linux File Permissions

By default the Harmonic MediaGrid Linux FSD does not reflect the Harmonic MediaGrid ACL security
permissions for a file or directory on the Harmonic MediaGrid file system. To have the Linux FSD translate
between Harmonic MediaGrid ACLs and Linux mode permission bits on files, use the o mode option on the
mount command line. For example:

# mount t omfs /mediagrid/filesys /mnt \

o username=username,password=password,mode

With this capability enabled, file permission bits may be tested and manipulated through the normal Linux
interfaces. Please note that turning this capability on will reduce performance related to directory access
operations, such as directory listing.

Internet Protocol Ports Used

The Harmonic MediaGrid clients use the following IP ports to communicate with the Harmonic MediaGrid.
TCP ports 10600-10604
UDP port 111
