Dear ________________ (XCPS Hiring Manager, Principal, Department Chair),
Please accept this letter and attached resume as an enthusiastic application for the English teacher position at XXX High School in XXX, State. I graduated in 2016 from the University of Virginia with a Master in Teaching Secondary English and a certification to teach English as a Second Language. I spent my student teaching experience working in ninth and twelfth grade in Charlottesville, Virginia, and I am interested in partnering with your English department to both make a positive impact on your schools students and continue to grow my effectiveness as a high school English teacher. Though I am entering my first full year as a new teacher, my student teaching experience and various other placements through the University of Virginias education program exposed me to diverse learners in both middle and high school. I have experience working with students who are first-generation college students, students learning English as a Second Language, high risk students, students with disabilities, and students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. I am passionate about using culturally responsive practices to reach students from all cultural contexts, and I am especially interested in applying my skills and experiences to work with your unique population of students. At my student teaching placement, I had the opportunity to work with ninth grade standard students on their analytical writing and reading skills. I learned the most effective ways to differentiate instruction in collaborative classrooms; provide adequate reading support of low and high level texts; scaffold pre- and during-writing, as well as revision, skills; and inductively teach grammar. I have a wide range of experiences teaching many types of texts to learners at different levels. Teaching in standard ninth grade, Advanced Placement twelfth grade, and all-grade Creative Writing elective courses, I have experience with behavior management of students in every grade of high school. I have honed my skills of planning engaging and relevant instruction, redirecting a class attention, consistently enforcing behavior expectations, and collaborating with school personnel to problem-solve specific behavioral issues. My strengths as a teacher are in building personal relationships with students, as well as a positive classroom climate. I offer XHS a positive and structured classroom atmosphere, which I hope will enhance its high spirited school atmosphere. I would love to pair my interpersonal skills with my passion for English education in order to support the reading, writing, researching, oral communication, and technology skills of the students at XHS. Thank you very much for your time and consideration of my resume. Please contact me at (xxx) xxx xxxx and mkw3cy@virginia.edu.
