Chapter 14
Summary: Judge Driscoll Decides to restore his family name by challenging Luigi to dull but,
before he partakes in the field of honour he restores Toms name in his family will. This causes
Tom to rejoice and change his destructive demeanor to never gamble or drink again. Tom is
aware of the change and reports it back to Roxy. Tom can no longer pawn Luigis knife so, they
both administer an alternative financial plan to get Tom out of debt. Until then Tom will pay the
debt collector interest.
Setting: Saturday night under a moon that can be described as bright as day. A duel was held in
the open field between the haunted house and Wilsons estate.
Quotes:
It's de nigger in you, dats what it is. Thirty-one parts o you is white, en ony one
part nigger, en dat po little one part is yo soul(109). Roxy is confronting Tom about
being a coward and not participating in the duel because the negro part of him couldn't
fight another man. Shows that's Toms true nature, that one drop of black blood is his
soul, regardless of growing up as a white person and being thirty-one parts white
Question: What is the significance of judge Driscoll restoring his family name?
Chapter 15
Summary: The remarkable have made their way into the hearts of the community for they have
been elected to run for city government. Well not everyone is infatuated with them. Tom is still
sour from the night Luigi kicking him into the crowd so, he attempts to blacken the twins
reputation. He tells Blake and Wilson there was never a knife and that the robbery was a ruse.
Later on Tom then embellishes Luigis self defense story as a cold assassin killer who he would
never want to be on the field on the field of honor with. Judge Driscoll is appalled then gives
money to Tom to start an attack campaign against the twins. As things begin to line up for Tom
he is then robbed of his plunder while on his way to St. Louis.
Quotes:
Put all your eggs in the one basket and WATCH THAT BASKET. Pg. 91
I can understand how much is has cost you to remain under that unjust stigma to
this time. But it is all right now, and no harm is done. You have restored my comfort
of mind, and this it your own; and both of us had suffered enough. Pg. 97
Tom went aboard his one of the big transient boats that night with his heavy
satchel of miscellaneous plunder, and slept with the sleep of the unjust, which is
serener and sounder than the one other kind as we know by the hanging-eve history

of a million rascals. Pg. 98 The judge understands why Tom was would not challenge
Luigi. His choice of words in calling that action unjust reflects on him as a person. The
judge states they can both restore to a comforted mindset. The author then calls upon the
judges words when describing Toms carefree slumber. However unlike the judges
prophecy of finally being able to rest this causes Tom to become a target of yet another
obstacle.
"The people took more pride in the duel than in all the other events put together,
perhaps. It was a glory to their town to have such a thing happen there. In their eyes
the principals had reached the summit of human honor"(113). The duel was the
highlight event of the town; shows how much the townspeople valued and glorified
human honor and took great pride in activities that upkeep it

Question: What's Tom's plan by telling his story?

Chapter 16
Summary: Roxy meets a distressed Tom in St. Louis. In the previous chapter we discover he was
robbed. Roxy then reassures Tom everything is okay, you may sell me as a slave up North where
conditions for slaves are better then buy me back. Tom deceives Roxy and sold her to a cotton
plantation in Arkansas, which is down the river. Roxy is afraid.
Editorial Omniscience:
For a whole week he was not able to sleep well, so much the villainy which he had played
upon his trusting mother preyed upon his rag of a conscience; but ager that he began to get
comfortable again, and was presently able to sleep like any other miscreant. Pg. 101
The author just comes out says this guy is a villain everyone. Though he has been an anti-hero
the entire time. He makes his own way down this dark path. Just like the motif in chapter 15 the
unjust sleep peacefully. Or at least eventually until his conscience is ok with what he has done.
Quotes:
But how am I going to sell you? You're free, you know."
"De law kin sell me now if dey tell me to leave de state in six
months en I don't go. You draw up a paperbill o' saleen put
it 'way off yonder, down in de middle o' Kaintuck somers, en
sign some names to it, en say you'll sell me cheap 'ca'se you's
hard up; you'll find you ain't gwyne to have no trouble."
IF you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This
is the principal difference between a dog and a man. -Puddnhead Wilsons Calendar
(120).
-The dog could be a representation of Tom and Roxy would be the one that picked up
and made him prosperous by switching him places with a white baby.
-A dog is different from a man because a dog is more loyal and wont bite you like a
man would. In other words, a man will turn their back on you or treat you horribly, like
how Tom treated Roxy.
Question: What do you think is Roxy's motive by offering herself up to be sold to the north?
