Literature Review
1. Race is an idea thought up typically, by an authoritative figure. Once in place
people do not want to go against the social norms, no matter how crazy the idea of
separation is. Through the experiments and classes Jane Elliott taught, we were able to
see into a glimpse of how a racial segregation is formed and how even children can go
from best friends to hating each other.

2. One can define race as a concept that is used to signify different types of human
bodies. Sociologists have found that there is no real biological basis for race, but
humans have always attempted to organize people into groups. This makes race an
unstable classification that is always changing and is directly connected to social forces
and structures. Race is an illusion and a social force often used in history linked to
political struggles making race real in the consequences that reside.

3. Hitlers ultimate goal was to create what he called a master race which
consisted of the perfect Aryan. He did this with a genetic engineering plan called the
Lebensborn Program. The clinics were set up and encouraged SS men to mate with
blue-eyed, blonde nordic girls with no Jewish ancestry with an attempt to produce
racially pure Germans. Hitler justified his extreme racism by connecting his obsession
with a pure race with Darwinian Science. Hitler wanted to create a stronger superior race
to every other and speed up the evolutionary process.

4. The Rwandan Genocide was different than any other genocide being that the
massacres were carried out in the open with roughly 800,000 Tutsis killed in a hundred
days by ordinary people. The killing in Rwanda were done by neighbors, spouses, and
workmates making the killins more intimate and nothing like Nazi Germany were the
victim were isolated from the public.

5. Three challenges to the account of race are the domain problem, Expertise and
Difference Problem, and the Mismatch problem. Domain problem is there is there are
many domains and what is the proper one. Natural domain was widely believed in the
nineteenth century and was the idea that race was specific to physical characteristics
now many philosophers believe that race has nothing to do with natural but
sociohistorical reasons. Expertise and Different Problem is without a domain it is hard to
consult an expert on the subject of race. The mismatch problem is the many definitions

6. Hitler's obsession with creating a master race started with the creation of a
breeding program that began on December 12, 1935. The ultimate goal was to create a
race to take over the world. The woman went through extensive testing for nordic
background and if allowed in were given a lot of benefits. The children of this program
were left very confused of their past and were treated terribly because of the Nazi
lineage.

7. Rwandans were led to believe by the European colonists that the Tutsi were
taller and more elegant. The Europeans created the division by using what they thought
of as scientific proof of testing physical characteristics. The Europeans put the Tutsi in
charge of the country, but when they left put the Hutu in charge leading to the Hutu
wanting revenge for years of repression.

8. Race has become a problem and stayed a problem in the U.S. because people
fear talking about it and sharing their opinions. Institutionalize and laws from early years
of the U.S. still shape the way we think. Ignoring color and minorities is dangerous
because it avoids the real problem.
