For and with all jazz students and faculty

Jazz Project Week 1

Oct 31 - Nov 4

INTRODUCTION
Dear students and faculty,

Uncharted
With this theme we invite you to the first project week of this academic year.
A week to inspire new pathways, to imagine and explore! With uncharted in
mind we think of adventure and fun, but also of uncertainty and risk. None without the other.
After a successful first year of project weeks weve found ourselves with a new
quest for ideas. And in the ensuing process of searching and hanging in there,
new ideas have found us!
This program book maps out a week full of new encounters, music and insight.
But only with you there will it take its true form. Let this program become your
temporary travelers guide!
Were looking forward to this week with you,
Anna-Maria with Frits, David and Bram.

Karel Boehlee & Frans van der Hoeven - Workshop
You must believe in spring
This workshop will focus on You must believe in spring, the last album Bill Evans recorded with bassist Eddie Gomez, who was so finely tuned-in to not only
Bills melodic ideas but to his freely played rubatos. Karel Boehlee and Frans
van der Hoeven will dive into the music, play for and discuss it with you. A central topic will be Evans melodic approach on this recording, thats been called
one of the most billevans-ish albums there are.

Please prepare for this workshop by listening to the album beforehand and
studying the themes of the songs!
Drums, Studio -2
Martijn Vink & Attie Bauw- Studio Workshop
11.00 13.00

Its all about the balance!

In this workshop we will take a closer look at the many aspects of recording
drums in the studio. Acoustics, placement of the microphones, tuning the
drums and finding the right dynamics will be some of the elementary topics.
We will work with several set ups and use live recording as a tool to experience
which factors in your playing influence the difference in sound, even using one
and the same set up.
Guitar, Ensemblezaal
Jesse van Ruller - Workshop Playing in between lines and chords
Guitarists often experience soloing and playing chords as two different worlds.
Well try to put the void in between lines and chord-grips on the map, and explore the possibilities to bring these worlds together.
Saxophone, 6.04 (from 12.00 also 6.02, 6.06, 6.08)
Marc Scholten - The Sopranos - Workshop
11.00-13.00
A lot of you double on soprano sax and if not, it would be a wise step to make
in the near future! Today we do the ultimate consumers test on soprano saxophones. Ill bring a line up of 8 different sopranos, so you can make up your
mind if you want an old American (Conn, Buescher), the Mark 6, the top line
of the Asian instruments (Yamaha, Yanagisawa) or maybe even a cheap new
Taiwanese?
Well check the character of sound, tuning, ergonomics, volume, price etc.
In addition to this Ill bring a lot of mouthpieces so we can try the set up of for
instance Dick Oatts, John Coltrane, Branford Marsalis and others.
The first hour youll get info and demonstration. The second hour you can try
yourselves in rooms 6.02, 6.06, 6.08. If you already have a soprano, bring it!

Song For Someone - The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler,
Amsterdam Blue Note
Nick Smart Lecture
Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) is one of the most enigmatic and influential jazz
musicians in recent memory. His musical life encompassed many of the developments in jazz from the mid-1960s onwards, placing him at the scene of
almost every major innovation in modern European jazz during the last half
century. Wheeler wrote countless compositions and was recognised as one of
the seminal writers for small groups and large ensembles. This talk provides an
overview of Wheelers varied musical life, with particular focus on the story behind his fascinating period of rapid artistic development in the late 60s, which
ultimately formed Wheelers instantly recognisable sound and approach.
Nick Smart is a British trumpet player and educator and the
head of the jazz department at the Royal Academy of Music
in London. Smart was a member of Wheelers big band and
worked closely alongside Kenny in his later years. Recognised
as one of the experts in Wheelers life and music, Smart is currently co-writing Kennys official biography for Equinox Publications; Song for Someone - The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler.
The Timing-Laboratory, room 6.03
Achim Heine - Workshop
Timing is the basis for the flow in all jazz-related music. Its our culture.
This lab looks at timing through a microscope, starting from examples of groups
from various genres, such as the Meters up to Hiatus Kaiyote. By analyzing the
specialties of each example you get a map of the different rhythmic possibilities
within a group.
Then we are going to play different feels, using methods to be able to just focus
on timing. These methods include synchronicity (which is the basis of course),
gradual tempo changes, and parallel discrepancies in relation to the beat up to
different approaches to stretching time.
This lab is meant to highlight various aspects of time and their appliance so
that you can utilize that in your playing and composing.
All instrumentalists and vocalists welcome.

only with our voice to get a closer connection to our musical ideas. Using your
voice is direct. You dont have to be a singer to use your voice. Lets explore if
we sing something else than we would play. Singing will raise your awareness
for what you hear and help you find the melodies youd like to express on your
instrument.

Whose Emotions? An Esthetic Journey from Score to Stage, Amsterdam

Blue Note
Michel Khalifa - Lecture & Group Discussion
Live performance of any kind of music can be highly emotional, for performers as well as listeners. But where do the emotions come from? What are they
supposed to achieve? Does a score for instance possess an emotional content?
And what do discussions about emotions tell us about the social status of musicians?
This lecture will focus on the changing relationship between composer, performers and listeners in various musical styles, from Monteverdi to bebop: A
presentation at the crossroads of aesthetics, music history and psychology,
hopefully followed by an impassioned discussion.
Michel Khalifa, musicologist and music journalist, teaches music history at the
Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
