Nokia digital ONU mobile application user guide

Getting started
Nokia optical network units (ONUs) come with support for
mobile applications that help to configure and retrieve the
statuses of the residential gateway (RGW) more intuitively.
The app is supported on Android and iOS platforms and can
be downloaded from the Google Play Store for Android and
from the Apple App Store for iOS. The mobile application
allows you to configure most of the features of the RGW
and also helps to check different statuses of the ONT.
The following is a list of features and statuses that can be
configured and retrieved using the RGW mobile application.

How to set up your

wireless network
To connect the Wi-Fi enabled devices in your
home network to the ONT and the internet,
you must enable and configure a wireless
network on the ONT. Depending on the type
of the ONT, the Wi-Fi options for wireless
5 GHz may be available.

Wireless 2.4 GHz

This frequency range is used by the
802.11b/g/n standard and can provide widely
available bandwidths of up to 450 Mb/s.
This configuration can be done as follows:
1. On the home screen as shown in
[Figure 1], select Wi-Fi.

Figure 1

2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2]

with one or two submenus, depending
on the type of ONT being used.
3. Select Wireless 2.4GHz.

How to set up
a guest network
Setting up a guest network is much the same
as setting up your initial wireless network.
Youll just need to select a different SSID from
your initial network setup, enter a unique
SSID (network name) and, if required, create
a password for the guest network.

Connecting
other devices
Sometimes equipment or applications
in your home network may require traffic
from the internet to be sent to them over
a specific port. This is often the case with
gaming consoles, for example, which requires
you to configure port forwarding on the ONT.

Figure 1

1. On the home screen as shown in

[Figure 1], select Advanced ONT Settings.
2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2]
with 12 submenus.
The Advanced ONT Settings menu allows
you to configure the following residential
gateway functions: DHCP, DNS, Firewall,
MAC Filter, IP Filter, URL Filter, NTP, DMZ,
ALG, Port Forwarding, DDNS and Password.

to add or delete new entries for port
forwarding [Figure 3].
To add a new port forwarding entry
you can select a predefined app setting
or add a manual entry.
Select the APP Name option to allow you
to pick a pre-existing application for port
forwarding. Alternatively, you can select
Customer Settings to get your own port
forwarding settings.

How to set up
parental controls
You can restrict access to or from the internet
from within your home subnetwork in several
ways:

IP filter

MAC filter

Controlling access to websites

IP filter
IP filtering enables you to name the IP address
of a device within your subnet (for example,
192.1.x.x), and restrict the flow of certain
types of IP data to or from that device, based
on the IP address. Restricted content is
discarded as it passes through the ONU.

you to pick the filtering type [Figure 4]:
Drop for upstream: Residential gateway
will drop all traffic originating from the
specified device.
Drop for downstream: Residential
gateway will drop all traffic with a
destination to the specified device.
5. Select the Device option to allow you
to either select a known device from
the ONU memory or manually register
a new device.
6. Select the Protocol option to allow you to
select specific types of traffic for filtering
or to filter all traffic.

Equipment in your network is identified by the
unique MAC address assigned to that device.
You can restrict which devices have access to
the internet according to their MAC address
by allowing or blocking access for the devices
listed (your choice).
1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1],
select Advanced ONT Settings.

How to limit access

to your network
To protect your home network by limiting
access of people outside of your network,
set up the following security options:

DMZ

ALG

Firewall

DMZ and ALG

A demilitarized zone (DMZ) is a firewall
configuration to improve the security of
your network. It enables the router to provide
an added layer of protection for your local
network by intercepting and filtering traffic
into and out of your network.

Figure 1

An application level gateway (ALG) provides

application security by understanding the
protocols used by the applications that it
supports and inspects protocol packets of
traffic passing through it.

How to assign IP
addresses to devices
in your network
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
enables the ONT to function as a DHCP
server that can automatically assign an IP
address to devices in your network from
a predefined range of addresses. This is
beneficial when you have multiple devices to
prevent duplicate addresses being assigned.
Alternatively, you can manually specify a
static (unchanging) IP address.
To configure the ONT to function as a DHCP
server and assign IP addresses:
1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1],
select Advanced ONT Settings.

How to set up a DNS

A domain name server (DNS) translates
user-friendly website addresses; for example,
www.nokia.com, into the registered IP address
assigned for that domain. Your computer uses
a domain name server to look up the domain
name youre trying to access.
1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1],
select Advanced ONT Settings.

Figure 1

2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2]

How to set up a DDNS

End users with internet access are assigned an
IP address by their internet service provider
(ISP). For most users, this address is dynamic,
i.e., changes frequently.
If you need to provide other users on the
internet with an IP address where you can be
reached (for example, if you are a hosting web
service), the constantly changing IP address
would be problematic. A dynamic domain
name server (DDNS) can be used to map a URL
address to your IP address. The ONU can be
configured to provide regular address updates
to the DDNS as changes occur.
1. On the home screen as shown in [Figure 1],
select Advanced ONT Settings.

Figure 1

2. This brings you to a window [Figure 2]

with 12 submenus.
The Advanced ONT Settings menu allows
you to configure the following residential
