Dear Dr. Bruce,
Coming into this class back in August 2016, I was a little uncertain of my ability to meet
all of the Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) required for this class. Throughout the course of
this past semester, I have gained a lot of knowledge as well as the ability to improve the
proficiency and efficiency in my writing style. I was able to meet and excel at all of the SLOs
required for English 301. I have selected four documents to specifically show my progress in
how I have become a more proficient writer throughout this past fall semester.
My Original Editorial would perfectly satisfy my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd SLO which include,
Rhetorical Focus, Ethical Citation, and Persuasion. I have masted these three student learning
outcomes by working on this assignment both formally and informally with classmates and my
professor in and out of class. I have found evidence and an issue to discuss by choosing a side to
support over the topic of marijuana. I also clearly addressed my information by organizing them
in a newspaper styled essay. In addition to, being able to compare and contrast cultural values of
my views and other opposing point of views.
In order to satisfy my 4th SLO of Organization, I chose to include my Reverse Outline
that I made before starting to write my editorial. I believe that it clearly shows how I organized
my thoughts well enough to how my arguments and counter-argument ideas were going to be
appropriately placed. In addition to, my overall rhetorical concern of the issue.
Additionally, to satisfy my 5th SLO of Language and Design for this course, my Revised
Editorial completes this requirement fully. By looking at the mistakes and errors I made in my
first original editorial, I was able to go back and correct them. I was able to recognize and
evaluate the mistakes I have made, and edited them to ensure that they were now concise and
more specifically influenced to be correct. By removing incorrect information such as the
concentration levels of THC, I was able to find a more sensitive and accurate source to
supplement my argument.
Finally, to show the use of Collaboration in my 6th SLO, I chose to include my groups
Web Outline from my profile assignment. By working with others from my group, I was able to
improve on my thoughts and ideas for my profile writing assignment. Also, by critiquing each
other we were able to successfully fix any errors in our research and evaluations.
Due to my future career in law enforcement, formal writing as well as APA style writing
is a requirement to succeed in the field of criminal justice. I feel that this class has prepared me
well enough to be successful in the future.
