Evans, Arthur C., Roland Lamb, and William L. White. 2013. The
Community as Patient: Recovery-Focused Community Mobilization
in Philadelphia, PA (USA), 20052012. Alcoholism Treatment
Quarterly 31(4): 45065.
The author focuses the topic of recovery and how the community could be
negatively affected by severe alcohol and illegal drug use. Furthermore, the
author really addresses the personal and family issues that are caused by
drug use. In addition, this source describes the theory of community
recovery and lies out strategies that Philadelphia could use on the road for
recovery. This source is helpful for my research paper in particular because it
focuses more on the personal and family aspect of the community instead of
the community as a whole. In the words, the source is more micro descriptive
than macro descriptive. My other sources really focus on how increasing
mobilization in community will decrease drug use and in a sense this source
does as well, however it is a little more focused on how communities are
damaged by drug addiction.
Hawkins, J. David., and Richard F. Catalano. 1992. Communities That
Care: Action for
Drug Abuse Prevention. San Francisco: JosseyBass Publishers.
In this journal the author addresses the topic of how a community of
supportive adults such as parents and educators could implement a plan that
addresses the use of illegal drugs within adolescents. This source also
provides other techniques such as educational techniques and the media to
gain results. This source is helpful for my research paper in particular
because again it gives the foundation of drug use at an early age. In
addition, it continues to show how a community could prevent high drug use
and promote better mobilization within the community and for the children.
Overall this source addresses the issues of drug abuse with our youth and
tries to convey a solution that will increase protective factors.
Manager, Tracy Harachi, J. David Hawkins, Kevin P. Haggerty, and
Richard F. Catalano. 1992. Mobilizing Communities to Reduce Risks
for Drug Abuse:
Lessons on Using Research to Guide Prevention
Practice. The Journal of Primary Prevention 13(1): 322.
In this journal the author focuses on the topic of how a mobilized community
could reduce the usage of drugs within the adolescent age group.
Communities have been trained in risk-focused plans in order to implement
drug prevention techniques for adolescents. The results used are from a pilot

phase funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Furthermore, the author

emphasizes that the framework of this approach is to improve protective
factors in the community and reduce risk factors. The main framework for
mobilizing communities and reducing risks is defined as the social
development prevention strategy. This source is helpful for my research
paper in particular because not only does this source give another age
group, it conveys the starting foundation of mobilization in order to achieve
prevention. In other words, it gives a different view of how community
mobilization effects drug use in adolescents.
Oreskovic, Anto et al. 2013. Coerced Addiction Treatment: How,
When and Whom? Alcoholism: Journal on Alcoholism & Related
Addictions 49(2): 10714.
In this journal the author addresses the topic of coerced drug abuse
treatment. Furthermore, the author establishes that paper focuses on the
psychiatric point of view for treatment. The aim of this journal is to convey
how coerced treatment positively effects mobilization in the areas of health
and behavior. This source also conveys a comparative aspect when
discussing the difference between voluntary and coerced treatment.
Ultimately, this source will be helpful for my research paper in particular
because it conveys in general how treatment whether it is voluntary or
coerced could improve and increase mobilization. This source also gives a
different view of how treatment should be administered.
Thurman, Pamela Jumper et al. 2003. Community Readiness: The
Journey to
Community
Healing. Journal of Psychoactive
Drugs 35(1): 2731.
The author addresses the topic of community readiness and how this theory
could implement a sustainable community and increase mobilization.
Furthermore, the author addresses how local prevention efforts must be
consistent with the degree of readiness of the community to achieve an
intervention. This source will be helpful for my research paper in particular
because it conveys the connection between community support and an
increase in mobilization. Furthermore, this source provides qualitative
evidence that supports my hypothesis.
Wang, W. 1999. Illegal drug abuse and the community camp
strategy in China. Journal Of Drug Education 29(2): 97-114.
The author addresses the topic of how China created a community drug
rehabilitation camp in order to control the usage and trafficking of illegal
drugs such as opium, heroin, and cocaine. Ultimately, the author describes
the evaluation of the community camps. This evaluation of these
communities is conducted in open-ended interviews with members of the

camp. These interviews contain the members experience with drug use and
how the camp helped them start their life. This source will be helpful for my
research paper in particular because it gives me real life examples of how
drugs user changed their lives and how these community camps increased
social mobilization.
White, William L. 2009. The Mobilization of Community Resources
to Support LongTerm Addiction Recovery. Journal of
Substance Abuse Treatment 36(2): 146 58.
The author addresses the topic of the history of addiction treatment and
recovery in the United States. The author is trying to establish the
relationship between recovery and community. In addition, the author
identifies the strategies that support the long-term recovery not only for
individuals, but the community and their families. This source will be helpful
in particular because it provides a foundation of addiction in the United
States, which will allow me to clearly convey the correlation between drug
abuse and social mobilization. In addition, the history will help convey the
evils of drug use and how recovery can help the community. Overall this
source provides information on how the community could help in the terms
of drug addiction.
