Introduction
Natural resources are naturally occurring substances that are considered valuable in their
relatively unmodified (natural) form. Natural resources are derived from the environment. Some

of them are essential for our survival while most are used for satisfying our wants. The natural
resources are classified into two types.

Renewable resources
Non-renewable resources

Renewable sources are generally living sources which can restock themselves if they are not
over-harvested but used sustainably. A non- renewable resource is a natural resource that exists in
a fixed amount that cannot be re-made, re-grown or regenerated as fast it is consumed or used.
Bangladesh is a developing country and its area is small. We have also some natural resources
some are renewable and some are non renewable. Renewable resources are water, fish and forest.
Non-renewable resources are Natural gas, oil and coal.

Use of Natural Resources

There are huge use and misuse of non renewable substances such as oil, coal, natural gas and so
on. Here the use and misuse of these resources will be discussed specific way.

Use of Oil

Production of gasoline (47%);

Heating oil and diesel fuel (23%);

For the manufacturing of chemicals, synthetic rubber, and plastics (18%);

Jet fuel (10%);

Propane (4%);

Asphalt (3%).

Cars, trucks, buses, trains, ships and airplanes -are fueled by oil, diesel or gasoline.
Use of Natural Gas

Industrial use (30.3%),

Residential use (21.6%),

Commercial use (13.9%),

Lease and plant fuel consumption (5%),

Pipeline and distribution (2.6%), and

Vehicle use (2.3%)

Use of Coal

It is mostly used as fuel.

Industrial and firms sectors use coal excess.
For producing electricity.
Coke comes from coal after hitting is used in still mills.
Use of Petroleum

Jet A, is a petroleum product to prevent sparking, gumming, corrosion, and icing

Diesel is used in medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.
Polyester, nylon, and acrylic are all derived from petrochemicals.
All plastic is made from petrochemicals.

Use of Glass Sand

Make crockerys, lenses, glass sheet of windows and doors.
Quartz clock, frame of boat and aero plane, foam glass is formed.
Silicon chips are also made from silica, which is a main ingredient of glass.

Use of White clay

Materials, insulator and tiles.

Also used in Paper, cement and sugar industries.
To make crockerys, sanitary

Use of Forest
Forests provide food, medicines, household equipment.
Bush meat, palm products such as oil, fuel wood, and building materials
Wood is an important source of energy for cooking and

Misuse of natural resources

Misuse of natural resources means refers to excessive use, destructive use or achieving
imbalance between resources either individually or in combination. Misuse of resources can also
be direct or indirect. Direct misuse refers to such situations where the resource is directly
destroyed or overused. But many times, some resources are indirectly put to misuse. Lack of
knowledge of resource and leads to misuse. Lack of knowledge about resource may be even
educated people or uneducated people.
Misuse of Coal

Excessive use of industrial production.

Unnecessary apply for producing electricity.
Digging unlimited amount of coal for economical growth rapidly.

Severe use of oil for car and industrial fuel.

Excessive use in cooking.

Release of oil into a body of water causes oil spill.

Misuse of Oil

Misuse of Natural Gas

During traffic jam, people do not switch off the engine.

People do not turn off their gas stoves when they are not using it.
5 percent of the worlds natural gas production is wasted through by burning
or flaring.

Misuse of Glass sand

Glass sand results in particulate emissions, soil erosion.

Glass manufacturing release air pollutants

After demolition much glass is disposed off in landfill without reuse or recycles.

Misuse of Forest resources

Continuous deforestation for commercial and fuel purposes.

Encroachment of forest area for agriculture.
Loss of forest area for irrigation dams
Mining and industrial purposes.

Causes of Misusing Natural Resources

Commercial interests like trading in products out of natural resources.

Ignorance on necessity to preserve natural resources.
Deliberate negligence on destruction of natural resource.
Entertainment/recreational/aesthetic interest.
Extreme population pressure
Self interest of human beings over the interest to retain natural resources.
International trade and commitments.
Misuse of legislation

Protracted legal process
Food interest
Luxuries required man
Increased industrial requirement
Improvement of standard of living, GDP, per capital income and purchasing power.
Expectations of instantaneous returns.

Effects of Misusing Natural Resources

There has a tremendous effect of misusing non-renewable natural resources on environment,
human health, social and economy life. The major effects are discussed below.
Oil

Carbon dioxide and waste materials are produced.

Contamination in water caused poisoning.
Accidents such as oil spills cause additional damage to the ecology.
Air pollution from the production and refining process.
Coal

Coal burning produces solid waste products annually.

Produces such waste- fly ash, bottom ash.
Runoff from coal piles can contaminate land and water.

Coal dust contributes particulate matter to the air.

Natural gas

Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Smog, Air Quality and Acid Rain.

Pollution from Industry and Electric Generation.

Pollution from the Transportation Sector.

human health.

Alternative of natural resources

In this term we will talk about the non-renewable natural resources. As these are non-renewable,
we have to find some alternatives of oil, natural gas, and coal. This is true that there has few
source of alternative. Coal is cheaper than oil and gas and more abundant. Though we have some
alternative sources for energy, these have many short comes and problems. In below, we have
discussed about the most common type of alternative energy

Solar energy is the generation of electricity from the sun. It is split up into two types,
thermal and electric energy. These two subgroups mean that they heat up homes and
generate electricity respectively.

Wind energy is the generation of electricity from the wind.

Geothermal energy is using hot water or steam from the Earths interior for heating
buildings or electricity generation.

Biofuel and Ethanol are plant-derived substitutes of gasoline for powering vehicles.

Nuclear binding energy uses nuclear fission to create energy.

Hydrogen is used as clean fuel for spaceships, and some cars.

Rules and regulation to discharge the misuse of natural resource

EPA is an agency who works for a better world. They make rules and regulation to protect the
human health and environment according to law (powered by congress). They have several
rules and regulation to control the misuse of natural resources. From their sites, some basic
rules name are given below

Air pollution control act 1955

Oil Pollution Act of 1924.
Oil pollution act of 1990.
Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976
Water Pollution Control Act of 1948
National Environmental Policy Act of 1969

Something else must work in our heart. The world is ours. We belong to the world and its our
duty to keep it safe. We cant welcome our new generation in an inhospitality world. At least
some ethics and values should make the difference.

MAKE THE WORLD AS A BETTER PLACE FOR YOU AND FOR ME
