December 2016 & January 2017 Newsletter

Dear Parents and Community Members:

Staff Development Days:

March 17
Half Staff Development
Days (Fridays):
November 10
December 16
February 17
May 12
June 20
June 21

I would like to express our sincere thanks to the Hermon and

DeKalb Junction Fire Departments who coordinated our Fire
Prevention Day at HDCS on Thursday, October 8. Students, grades
PK-5, all met with the firefighters both in the classroom and out with
the firefighting equipment. Many prizes were handed out for the
coloring contest including smoke alarms and of course fire hats for all.
On Tuesday, November 22, the school will hold its annual Go
Home Drill. Students will be released 15 minutes early on that day,
and all students must leave school at that time. Thanksgiving vacation
is scheduled for Wednesday - Friday, November 23- 25.

Student dismissal will be at

noon on the Half Staff
Development Days.

Our Winter Concert will be held December 14 at 1pm for the

Elementary and 7pm for the Secondary. These are entertaining
concerts, please feel free to attend.

Parent Teacher
Conferences will begin at
noon on Monday, November
21 and Thursday, March 23.

Reminder, December 16 is a Half Staff day with a noon dismissal. As

we prepare this newsletter, results from our lead testing have still not
been provided to us. When we receive these we will mail out the
results.

It is that time of year again when snow and freezing rain visit the
North Country. During a typical winter we have several scenarios that
can occur including a one or two hour delay, early dismissals and fullday closure. Notices will be posted on WWNY Channel 7 and Fox 28
NO School:
as well as WSLU (89.5) and YES FM (96.7) and our school website.
December 23 - January 2
We will update our website to reflect these situations as they occur. As
January 16
a parent you will also receive a call alert notifying you of the delay or
cancellation. Please make sure the school has your current phone
number so we are able to contact you.
I welcome your thoughts and questions, and encourage you to contact me at any time through email at
mwhite@hdcsk12.org or by phone 347-3442.

NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As the temperatures get cooler and the days grow shorter we are reminded that winter is right around the corner.
This change in the weather also means an increase in the responsibility for students, parents and the school to
ensure safety in and out of the building.
Dress for the Season
One of the best ways to prepare for emergencies is to have the proper clothing. As road conditions change there
is always a possibility of the bus becoming stuck or not able to operate correctly. Please have students wear a
coat, a hat and gloves on the bus. This will provide them warmth as a new bus is sent to their aid or if they are
transferred to another bus.
Marking Period/Grades
The first marking period has ended and student report cards have been sent home. We have been busy meeting
with students regarding their grades and their plans for the future. If you have not yet signed up for the Parent
Access Portal to monitor your students grades please contact the Guidance Office to set this up. This is a great
way to stay on top of your childs progress and monitor their grades.
Attendance, Every Day Counts
As we near the end of the first quarter marking period it is important to remember the schools policy on
attendance. Being present is one of the biggest factors in student success.
Hermon-DeKalb Central believes that regular attendance by its students is necessary for them to obtain an
adequate understanding of the instructions and materials presented by its teachers and the programs of study.
Regular attendance also provides for effective continuity within each classroom and for the effective daily
operation of the school. In addition each student acquires social skills, a strong work ethic, and daily living
skills through regular attendance.
If a student is to receive credit for a course offered at HDCS, it is essential that the student maintain an
attendance record of minimal absences. Minimum attendance for each class is required as a condition for
receiving course credit or for permission to take a final examination and/or Regents exam. For this reason, the
following guidelines have been established to help students be successful. The maximum number of absences
allowed will be as follows:

Full Credit Courses (those meeting every day of the week all year)
24 total absences
Half Credit Courses (those meeting 2-3 days a week all year or every day for only 1 semester)
12 total absences

Any student with absenteeism in excess of the limits above will be unable to sit for the final exam and/or
complete the course for credit. All absences, legal, illegal, excused or unexcused, will be included in the total
number of absences that account for a loss of credit.
Please feel free to contact me at school if you have any concerns or questions.

HDCS BOOSTER CLUB EVENT

On Saturday, October 22nd, a basketball clinic was held for students in grades 4-8, and our JV and Varsity
teams. We had members of the SUNY Canton mens team and coaching staff here to kick off the day and work
with students on skills and drills. This event would not have been possible without the help of our own amazing
coaches, Coach Rowley, Coach Klock, Coach Beaulieu, Coach Morrill, Coach Simser, along with a few St.
Lawrence University womens basketball players. Hunter Hitchman, who graduated from Hermon-DeKalb, was
one of the basketball players who came to help out. We had a day full of fun drills and games and each
participant received a t-shirt. Our students loved this clinic and talked about it for days! With that kind of
interest and excitement we hope to be able to offer it again in the future.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our families!! See you on Conference Day!!

DONATION
Mrs. Bascom is looking for donations of fishing and hunting magazines for her classroom. If
anyone has copies they are willing to donate, we will happily accept them. They can be dropped
off at the school or contact Mrs. Bascom so she can pick them up.

In Recognition of Veterans Day

We are asking for submissions of any HD alumni who formerly served and who are currently serving in
the U.S. armed forces. Our display cases in front of the library could use some updating and we need the

duty or other event. Pictures can be scanned and returned if a return address is provided. Please send any
pictures or information to:
Hermon- DeKalb Central School

soccer team both saw improvement as the year went on and are looking forward to next year.
Congratulations to Dawson Kerr for achieving 1st Team All-North status for boys soccer and Ryan
Morrill for his Section X sportsmanship award. On the girls side Zarina Hernandez was awarded 1 st Team AllNorth and Breanna Harrington was awarded 2nd Team All-North with Section X sportsmanship honors going to
Kari Hance. The following soccer players earned All-Academic status: Tanner Hale, Ryan Morrill, Patrick
Tehonica, Garrett Willard, Paige Hamilton, Kari Hance, Sydney Harris, Zarina Hernandez, Cassidy Simmons,
Camryn Ward, and Miranda White. They should be congratulated for working hard on the field and in the

Student Council Giving Tree and Memory Tree

Once again this year, the Hermon-DeKalb Student Council is sponsoring a Giving Tree and a Memory Tree in
the main lobby at school. Many community members want to honor the memory of their loved ones, while
others wish to support neighbors in need during the holiday season. We do not want any children, youth, or
adults waking up on Christmas morning disappointed because Santa forgot them. We would like to help anyone
in the district who is experiencing some hardships to have a happy holiday season.
We are asking anyone who is interested to please come into school and take an ornament off the tree. This
ornament will have information on it regarding whether or not the gift is for a male or female, adolescent or
child; the size, age and any other gift ideas or needs. The ornament will not show a name, since all information
is CONFIDENTIAL.
Please bring your wrapped gift to the school, along with the ornament you chose, and the gifts will be delivered
to the local churches the weekend before the Christmas break. If you cannot wrap the gift yourself, we will do
that for you. We would appreciate having all gifts by December 12. That gives us a few days to arrange
delivery. If you are unable to get to school to pick up an ornament, but want to contribute, you may call the
school at 347-3442 and ask for Mrs. Jill Morrill, School Nurse, and she will make arrangements for you.
Likewise, if you cannot deliver your gift and ornament to school, contact her and she will make arrangements to
pick it up from you.
Please open your hearts to some deserving person this year and help provide them with a little bit of joy on
Christmas morning. If you know of anyone who is having some hardship, and is in need of some help, please
send the following information to Mrs. Jill Morrill, School Nurse, at 709 East DeKalb Road, DeKalb Junction,
New York 13630. If you prefer to call her at school, you may do so, and she will take down the necessary
information. PLEASE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: the persons age and size of
clothing/shoes/boots, or any other gift ideas or needs, an address and phone number (for delivery purposes), and
your name (optional). Please send or call in this information by December 1, or as close to that date as possible.
Once again, all information is confidential.
The Student Council is also providing the Memory Tree, once again this year. We would like to offer you the
opportunity to honor the memory of your loved ones, or honor those who are away serving in the armed forces,
throughout this glorious holiday season when friends and family are so near and dear to us. If you wish to
remember a loved one, please fill out the form below, along with a $1.00 donation per name, and return it to the
HDCS Student Council, in care of Mrs. Shelly Amo. We will begin our Memory Tree at the beginning of
December, and continue through mid-January. We will post a list of all the people on the Memory Tree, along
with their donor, in the next newsletter, and in the main lobby of the school in the Student Council showcase.
Please print or write clearly any information you want to appear on the Memory Tree ornament, and return it to
the school in care of the Student Council, or Mrs. Amo, anytime from the beginning of November until
Christmas break on December 22.

Cooperative Extension, Seaway Valley Prevention Council and St. Lawrence University Reading Buddies are
some of the programs offered to our students. About 100 students in grades K-8 are presently enrolled in our
Extended Day Program. If you would like to enroll your child at any time throughout the school year please call
Beth Daley or Deb Brice at 347-3442.

INFORMATION ABOUT SCHOOL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

Dear Parents:
Hermon-DeKalb Central School Districts Cafeteria provides parents a convenient, easy and secure online prepayment service to
deposit money into your childs school meal account at any time. This service also provides parents the ability to view your childs
account balance through a web site called myschoolbucks.com. By having money in each childs account prior to entering the
cafeteria, we find the lunch lines move along much faster so your child has more time to eat and be with friends.
Also, parents will have the ability to print out a copy of their childs eating history report. This history report will show you all dates
and times that your child has purchased a breakfast and or lunch within the past thirty days.
To access these services:
1.
2.
3.

Simply go to the district web site at www.hdcsk12.org.

Click on the Cafeteria link (myschoolbucks.com).
Click on the link. From this site you will create your account and add money to your childs school meal account. All you
need is your childs name and student ID number.

Things to know:

If you have more than one child in the District you can handle all online prepayments from the same online account.
Payments may be made through Visa, MasterCard and Discover Credit Cards or debit card.
Payments are generally processed by PayPal within 24 hours.
In order to use the online prepayment service, a small convenience fee for each transaction will be assessed to cover the bank
fees. The convenience fee is $1.95 per deposit transaction. Parents placing money into multiple meal accounts will only be
assessed the $1.95 fee once per deposit transaction. Hermon-DeKalb Central School District will not profit from the use of
this site.

We are very pleased to offer these services. However, if you choose not to take advantage of the online prepayment service you may
continue to make advance payments via check, which should be made payable to the Hermon-DeKalb Central School District. Please
write your childs full name on the check.
If you have any questions about these new services, please feel free to contact the school at 315-347-3442.

Registering for Myschoolbucks.com

Please refer to the Getting Started Guide posted on our website for instructions on registering and depositing money into an account.

Free and Reduced applications are available throughout the year. Anyone may apply at any time. A new application must be filled
out each year. Anyone that receives food stamps may fill out an application or simply bring in the form letter received in August from
Canton to be copied. This makes the process faster.
Please remember that only two charges are allowed. We must keep accounts updated. Prepay works well in that you know the money
is going towards school meals and not being spent on some of the many other items for sale in the building.
It is important to support our meal programs. The lunchroom is a fun place to be where students can relax a bit from the learning
schedule. Please feel free to join us at any time. We encourage suggestions. Our doors are always open. Have a good year!

Keep your kids safe. Get their seasonal flu vaccines every year.

Seasonal Flu: A Guide for Parents

Is seasonal flu more serious for kids? Infants and young children are at a greater risk for getting seriously ill
from the flu. Thats why the New York State Department of Health
recommends that all children 6 months and older get the seasonal flu
vaccine.
Flu vaccine may save your childs
life.

Most people with seasonal flu are sick for about a week, and then they
feel better. But, some people, especially young children, pregnant
women, older people, and people with chronic health problems can get
very sick. Some can even die. An annual vaccine is the best way to
protect your child from seasonal flu. The vaccine is recommended for
everyone 6 months and older every year.

What is seasonal flu?

The flu, or influenza, is a viral infection of the nose, throat, and lungs.
The flu can spread from person to person.

Flu shot or nasal spray vaccine?

Flu shots can be given to children 6 months and older.

A nasal-spray vaccine can be given to healthy children 2 years and
older.
Children younger than 5 years who have experienced wheezing in the
past year or any child with certain chronic health problems should
get the flu shot, not the nasal-spray vaccine. Ask your doctor which
vaccine is best for your child.
Children younger than 9 years old who get a vaccine for the first time
need two doses.
Get the seasonal flu vaccine for yourself.
Encourage your childs close contacts to get seasonal flu vaccine,
too. This is very important if your child is younger than 5 or if he or
she has a chronic health problem such as asthma (breathing disease) or
diabetes (high blood sugar levels). Because children under 6 months
cant be vaccinated, they rely on those around them to get an annual
flu vaccine.
Wash your hands often and cover your coughs and sneezes. Its best
to use a tissue and quickly throw it away. If you dont have a
tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
This will prevent the spread of germs.
Tell your children to:
Stay away from people who are sick;
Clean their hands often;
Keep their hands away from their face, and
Cover coughs and sneezes to protect others.
The flu comes on suddenly. Most people with the flu feel very tired
and have a high fever, headache, dry cough, sore throat, runny or
stuffy nose, and sore muscles. Some people, especially children, may
also have stomach problems and diarrhea. The cough can last two or
more weeks.

How else can I protect my child?

What are signs of the flu?

How does the flu spread?

People who have the flu usually cough, sneeze, and have a runny nose.
The droplets in a cough, sneeze or runny nose contain the flu virus.
Other people can get the flu by breathing in these droplets or by
getting them in their nose or mouth.

How long can a sick person spread the

flu to others?

Most healthy adults may be able to spread the flu from one day before
getting sick to up to 5 days after getting sick. This can be longer in children
and in people who dont fight disease as well (people with weaker immune
systems).

What should I use to clean hands?

Wash your childrens hands with soap and water. Wash them for as long as
it takes to sing the Happy Birthday song twice. If soap and water are not
handy, use a hand sanitizer. It should be rubbed into hands until the hands
are dry.

What can I do if my child gets sick?

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks lots of fluids. Talk with
your childs doctor before giving your child over-the-counter medicine. If
your children or teenagers may have the flu, never give them aspirin or
medicine that has aspirin in it. It could cause serious problems.

Can my child go to school/day care with

the flu?

No. If your child has the flu, he or she should stay home to rest. This helps
avoid giving the flu to other children.

When can my child go back to school/

day care after having the flu?

Children with the flu should be isolated in the home, away from other
people. They should also stay home until they have no fever without the use
of fever-control medicines and they feel well for 24 hours. Remind your
child to protect others by covering his or her mouth when coughing or
sneezing. You may want to send your child to school with some tissues, and
a hand sanitizer if allowed by the school.
