unforeseen problems, the instructor may schedule make-up classes on dates or times that differ
from the official college course schedule that students are required to attend.

Evaluation
Grading Philosophy
The grading philosophy in the Department of Human Services Technology is to reward the effort
and high quality work of actively engaged and responsible learners. In order to clarify
expectations, instructors will distribute rubrics to students for all assignments. As an alternative
to rubrics, instructors may use any combination of the following as a guideline in grading
assignments; (1) actively engaged in the educational experience; (2) demonstrate professional
responsibility; (3) consistently give tasks the necessary effort required; (4) perform all tasks with
excellence; and (5) create high quality work products.

Grading Permissions/FERPA
For faculty posting grades electronically on Blackboard, written consent is not required provided
a student's grade is posted where only the student can access it with a secure password (i.e.,
individual grade books). Faculty may not post grades on a Blackboard site to which all class
members have access; such an action would constitute the disclosure of personally identifiable
information without student consent.
Faculty may send a grade to individual students via email only when there is written
authorization from the student on file. Authorization should be maintained by the instructor
and College registrar; WebAdvisor will be the official means of final grade notification.

ASSIGNMENTS
Chapter Journal Entry
20%
Weekly you will be expected to complete an assignment from your textbook On
Course by Skip Downing. These will be assigned in class for the following week. Each
chapter in the On Course text has a series of 4 journal entries total. Students are required to
write 3 of the 4 journal entries and upload them into blackboard. The last chapter is the
only expectation, there is only one JE. Course Outline highlights due dates for journal
entries.
Personal Journal Paper
20%
Journaling is an intervention often used in the counseling field. In order to achieve a
greater understanding of what we ask our clients to do, we must participate in the

reflection process ourselves. Each student should keep a running journal weekly
throughout the semester. A rubric/checklist will be assigned to each student by the
instructor to help create structure around students journaling throughout the semester.
Each students cumulative journal entries will be used to complete a final paper toward the
end of the semester (Please see blackboard resource tab for the rubric/checklist
document). In addition note the Journal paper is completely separate from the Chapter
Journal Entry based on the class textbook. The content of the journal assignment should
match the content of the PRA assignment. Students should be aware the instructor is also
monitoring the students professional behavior throughout the semester.
Professional/Personal Reflection Assignment - PRA
20%
Professionalism and Human Services Roles: Your level of professionalism will be
demonstrated by your behavior in class. In your self-evaluation of professionalism please
consider the following criteria for professional development: regular on-time class
attendance, preparedness for class discussion and task group work, willingness to
share professional experiences, viewpoints, and reaction; ability to participate in
class and task group discussion and to raise relevant questions and issues; and
willingness to give and use feedback constructively. Please rate yourself regarding the
above mentioned criteria. The PRA assignment is a critical thinking and reflective writing
assignment. Write your understanding of how these characteristics are related to
professionalism in class and as a professional working in an agency. You the student should
reflect on your potential role(s) as a human service worker in a specific agency. In addition
to your role professionally compare how you impact the class through these criteria. The
instructors tracking of students professional behavior will be included in students final
grade. The grading is a half the instructors evaluation and half the students evaluation.
There are three PRAs this semester. Check course outline for due dates.
Team Building Exercises
20%
Team Building Exercise: Beginning in the second or third week, students will
spend part of every class working in small teams. Each team member is responsible to
contribute equally. Each team will designate a leader per team exercise. This leader will
facilitate conversation per online platform i.e. email, blackboard discussion board to
prepare the team exercise. As leader you should be prepared to receive feedback from
team mates following each TE presentation. Each team member will give write feedback to
the team leader based on content which will be discussed in class. The team leader
feedback is due the Friday of the TE presentation. Important points of TE presentations,
students not present on the day they are supposed to lead will receive a 0 for that
assignment. Team leads are expected to send an email to their team and instructor prior to
the meeting if they are unable to attend. This is a part of professional development in the
human service field. Please see blackboard for grading of team exercises. Students final
grade requires a Self-evaluation along with feedback from the instructor.

Underrepresented Population Presentation: Each student will work with their
team throughout the semester. Each task group will select a different underrepresented
population to study and do a presentation on culturally competent practice for these
groups. These presentations will be scheduled close to the end of the semester. Each
student in the team will be evaluated as a whole for a percentage grade.
Action Plan:
20%
Students will meet with their academic advisor and map out their expected
academic plan and anticipated graduation date. Students should include each semester
current through their expected graduation semester. Summer courses should be included
in the Action Plan. Students will also identify possible populations, agencies they are
interested in working for Work Based Learning. More information will be provided in class.

Grading Scale:
The following grading scale will be used to calculate final course grades:
A
B
C
D
F

93-100
85-92
77-84
70-76
0-69

*The Health Sciences Division follows a 7 point grading scale. In addition, the Human
Services department utilizes a weighted grading system (NOT total points). You will find on
your course syllabus how each assignment/activity is graded. For example:
Cultural Autobiography worth 20%
If you do not complete the assignment, you would already be at an 80% for the course because
the assignment was worth 20% of your total grade.

Hybrid and Online Courses

Students who have registered for online and/or hybrid classes must complete the Course Entry
quiz on their Blackboard account before the course census date. Completion of the Course Entry
quiz will count as your enrollment (enter date) into the class. Students must complete a Course
Entry quiz for EACH online or hybrid class they are registered for. Failure to complete the
Course Entry quiz by the census date (10%) date of the class will result in the instructor
recording you as a Never attended (NA) which counts an attempt at Wake Tech Community
college and may incur charges for the class.
