Top Computer Science Careers


If youre a college student trying to pick a major that will maximize your career prospects, its
no secret that computer science is a good choice.(ItWorld). Technology is literally everywhere around
us, therefore computer scientists take part in every type of industry. There are so many different ways
that you can use the knowledge and skills you learn from computers in multiple job settings. Even within
the computer industry there is a great variety of jobs you can choose from. Out of all of the careers you
can choose from with a degree in computer science, some have an incredible amount of job openings
than others and have a greater salary than others.
One of the top jobs in the computer science industry is Software Quality Assurance or QA tester,
they review the software to confirm accuracy and cut down on defects. Testing includes designing test
plans to locate errors and maintaining a database of past software defects. There is roughly 16,179 jobs
available that make a median of $83,410 salary. Another top computer science job is a Software Systems
Developer. They develop and design various softwares for almost any type of industry and also test the
softwares to search for errors. If the developers find any errors they correct and improve the
performance of the software.
A great job in the computer science field is also a Computer Programmer. They are the ones who
write and create programs for computers, either for the operation of the computer or for something

within the computer itself. These programs can locate, store or retrieve data and the program is in
charge of verifying that the programs run properly. This occupation has a median salary of $77,550 with
19,229 jobs available. This is a great job for people who like to code and like to work with complex
problems. Along with Computer Programmer, a Web Designer is a great career. This is a great job for
people who are more on the creative side because they create, design and edit web page content. They
use feedback from tests and users to mold the websites into user friendly web pages that execute what
the creator wants. There are currently 19,993 jobs available that make a median of $63,490.
Another top computer science field job is a Business Intelligence Analyst, with a median salary of
$80,280. This is a perfect job for someone who likes to analyze data, in this industry daily tasks consist
of gathering data from the companys software and comparing it to competitor data. Analyzing this data
helps the company find trends in the industry to improve business. There are currently 20,589 jobs
available and has a projected growth of 3 to 7 percent. Completely different from a Business Intelligence
Analyst is a Database Administrator. They maintain databases and make updates and corrections to
them as needed. This is an important job, for example in a company setting the administrator would be
in charge of the companys numbers like sales, and expenses. They also keep track of all of the
employees and customers information. Currently at 20,835 available jobs and 15to 21 percent
projected growth, it is a great opportunity for someone who is looking to a Database Administrator as a
career path.
Another completely different career choice within the computer science field is Network System
Administrator. There are currently 21,089 jobs available that make a median salary of $75,790. They
are in charge of an organizations network system, they install, upkeep and do the configuration of the
network. This is a great choice if you like paying attention to detail as the administrator ensures all of
the performance runs without interruption. A level up in career choice is a Computer Systems Engineer.

This is a little tougher of a choice because they combine knowledge of computer science, engineering
and mathematical analysis to trouble shoot computers. They also work with the stability of the security
system and develop solutions to application and network problems. There is only a projected growth of
3 to 7 percent, but there are currently 21,144 jobs available.
Computer System Analysts is one of the computer science careers that make the most money,
with a salary of $82,710. They take currently established organizations computer systems and
procedures and study them to design information systems. Their goal is to help the organization operate
more efficiently and effectively, they help improve computer systems. This is a great choice if you like
big tasks and are task oriented with your work. The top career is Software Development, it is also one of
the highest paid careers with a median salary of $95,510. They design and customize computer
application softwares, and they modify existing ones to optimize efficiency. They take the users needs
and determine how to alter the software so that the user gets the most benefits they can. Depending on
the size of the company the software development can be broken down into different sections. This is a
great career choice if you like to be creative along with complexity.
Whatever your interests maybe there is a career in the computer science field that can
accommodate it. Each career within ranges from the amount of creativity to analytical problem
solutions, and you can either work with the software or the hardware. There is a great variety and
almost each career path is expected to have a great growth in available job numbers. With technology
already a part of our daily lives, it will only become more integrated, meaning that the amount of
different career choices will only grow in size and variety. Even if you decide to go into a different area
of study, you will greatly benefit from even a minor in computer science.
