Studio Four (Rhetoric Knowledge)
Before I viewed and read about rhetoric for this assignment, I viewed rhetoric as a way of
speaking to lie to persuading the audience to believe what theyre saying for their own benefit.
Mostly used buy speakers. But after learning more about it, I was wrong. Rhetoric is language,
body language, and even art, its all around us. Its used in all aspects of life and can be pointed
out anywhere. The rhetorical triangle is a graphical representation to define the element of
rhetoric designed by Aristotle. The three main elements are speaker, audience, and subject.
Aristotle chose a triangle because all the elements are connected to each other, and all have an
affect on one another. Logos, Ethos, and Pathos are used to help relate the speaker to the subject,
to the audience. Context and Aim were two other elements added later on to the triangle to
represent the purpose and topic, these speakers or writers that would be explaining to an
audience. After watching the first commercial for Coca-Cola, I can see how the triangle is put
into play, the speaker which is Coca-Cola is trying to tell the audience which is all people
watching that hating and being negative is not the only way, if you put happiness in, youll get
happiness out. That is represented by buying their product. For the second commercial you can
tell that the speaker advertises happiness is in san Diego, to persuade the audience to visit for
vacation, so they can be happy as well. It seems like all these advertisements are chasing
happiness, knowing its what most people are looking for in life.

The last commercial uses pets to resemble happiness and sadness or grumpiness. Where
the puppy represented happiness and the kitty represented sadness. The dog chased after the cat
but to only be disappointed that the cat disapproved. Basically stating you only can be happy if
you let happiness in and not pushing it away. You can connect rhetoric to anything outside these
commercials, to any conversation you have, to a movie or to just your personal thoughts, its
limitless. It helps you find the deeper understanding to connection to the text or movie or
anything. The actual purpose of certain information that is being communicated. After doing this
assignment I can see that most people have a false understanding of rhetoric, and are oblivious to
where it stands and its true purpose and how its a part of everything around us. This can help
students really connect to the work theyre examining and go past what its saying to what the
actual meaning is using rhetoric.
