ED 345 Calvin College Lesson Plan

Teacher: Kristina Wicks

Date: 11/9
Subject/Topic/ Theme: Science/Differences and similarities between salt water and fresh
water/Hydrosphere
I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
The focus of this lesson is on the differences and similarities between salt water and fresh water.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan?
This lesson focuses on two types of water that are a part of the hydrosphere: fresh water and salt water.
It specifically focuses on comparing and contrasting fresh water and salt water.

Use Venn Diagram to record similarities and differences about fresh

water and salt water. This picture may be helpful for some students
to organize their thoughts.
- The Plickers app allows students to review information without
others seeing what they chose. This is a way for the teacher to
assess students understanding (because the answers are recorded
on the Plickers app).
26 copies of Venn Diagram Sheet
Whiteboard and marker
26 Plickers Cards
Computer (Kahootit.com)
14 Multiple Choice Cards (for back up if students cannot log into
Kahootit.com)
IPad (with Plickers app to record student responses)
Projector
26 Notecards
No. Students sit in two rows of 6-7 students in each.

Teacher Activities
Finish Kahoot.it introduction from last lesson.
What is fresh water? What is salt water?
Teacher draws a Venn Diagram on the whiteboard to fill in the similarities and differences between salt
water and fresh water. Students will receive a copy of Venn Diagram to copy notes on board.

Closure

What is special about fresh water? How is fresh water different than salt water?
- No salt/little salt/low salinity
- Drinkable
- Found in rivers, lakes, glaciers and water vapor (most found in glaciers)
What is special about salt water? How is salt water different than fresh water?
- Salty/lots of salt
- Not drinkable
- Found in oceans
What is the same about fresh water and salt water?
- Used for transportation
- Change land through erosion
- Part of the water cycle
- Both waterH20 (even though one has more salt in it)
Add ideas that students share to the Venn Diagram. Explain that they are trying to find similarities and
differences between salt water and fresh water itself. Some students will say you can swim in both or
animals can live in both. However, this information is not about the water itself.
Have students respond to the exit card questions from the previous lesson OR teacher gives each student a
Plickers answer card. (The exit card will be less time consuming.) Explain that students will answer
multiple choice questions with these cards. They will turn in a certain way to answer each question. All of
the cards look different so they cannot cheat of their partners. Students will respond to the following
questions on Plickers:
- Fresh water does not contain very much salt. We can say that it has low what? Salinity.
- Where is salt water mostly found? Oceans.
- Where is most of the Earths fresh water found? Glaciers.
- Fresh water and salt water are both a part of what cycle? Water cycle.
- Fresh water and salt water change the geosphere through what process? Erosion.

Reflection:

This differences and similarities lesson was a good review of the kahoot.it introduction lesson. I challenged
students to think of what some differences between salt water and fresh water that we learned last time
(without looking at their notes). About half of the students hands went up.
Many of them seemed to get caught up on some non-scientific similarities and differences between salt water
and fresh water, like they you can swim in both and sharks live in one and not the other. I was struggling to
find a way to respond to these. They are true; however, they are not ideas about the water itself, but rather
what is done with the water or what is in the water. I need to find a better way to articulate the kinds of
answers I looking for.
The Venn Diagram was a good way for students to organize their thoughts. Once I showed them how to use
one, they seemed to appreciate it.
I did not get a chance to review with them because I needed to move onto the density demonstrations in the
next lesson.
