The Bombardier TRAXX family of locomotives are a series of mainline locomotives built by Bombardier
Transportation in both freight and passenger variants. Originally built for dual voltage AC; later versions are quad
voltage machines - able to operate on most European electrification schemes : 1.5/3.0 kV DC and 15/25 kV AC ; the
family was expanded to include diesel powered versions in 2006.
The acronym stands for Transnational Railway Applications with eXtreme fleXibility[7] Locomotives were primarily
made for the railways of Germany, with orders coming from other European countries including France,
Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland and Spain.
Development
Background
In the early 1990s the Deutsche Bahn sought replacements for its electric locomotive fleet - the universal
locomotives DB Class 120 had been successful, and it was planned to build ~1000 of a DB Class 121 based on the
design, as a locomotive suitable for all tasks.
However the railway reform of 1994 (see Deutsche Bahn AG) and the inheritance of over 600 DR Class 243 from
the former Deutsche Reichsbahn meant that no new Class 121 was ever built.[8] The reform of 1994 included the
splitting of the Deutsche Bahn into various business area related companies, with the result that workload specific
locomotives were preferred.
With the electric locomotive fleet aging; especially the DB Class 103, further new electric locomotives were needed.
In the late 1990s the DB Class 101 were procurred from ADtranz (later to become part of Bombardier) as a
replacement for the Class 103. For more general use the DB Class 152 (the Siemens' EuroSprinter) was acquired as
well as the DB Class 145 which can be considered the predecessor of the TRAXX family.[9]
Manufacture
All TRAXX locomotives are assembled and tested at Bombardier's plant in Kassel Germany, except the DC only
versions which are assembled at Vado Ligure.
The individual components are sourced from a variety of sites:[4]
• Traction and auxiliary converters (inverters) : Bombardier, Mannheim (also in Trapaga Spain for DC versions[10]

• Bogies : Bombardier, Siegen
• Driver cabs : Bombardier Propulsion and Components (PPC) in Henningsdorf
• Locomotives bodies and frames : Bombardier, Wroclaw (Poland)
• Cooling components : Behr GmbH & Co., Stuttgart
• Brakes : Knorr, Munich
• Transformer : ABB Sécheron, Geneva (Switzerland)

TRAXX F140 AC
The TRAXX F140 AC was first presented in 2000. The units, like the DB Class 145; from which they are a
developed only operate on AC overhead lines. Unlike the Class 145 they can work from both 15kV and 25kV AC
systems. As built they are configured for future ETCS / ERTMS train control and safety systems.[1]
The production of 200 units built between 2001 and 2003 for Deutsche Bahn were classified as DBAG Class 185. A
further 57 units were built for various European leasing companies as Class 185.5
For the railways of Switzerland another 35 units were produced for SBB Cargo (Re482), and 20 units for BLS AG
(Re485). The Swiss locomotives are identical to the German versions except in details such as pantographs (2 more,
with smaller contacts for running in tunnels) and Switzerland specific safety systems in addition to the German
systems.

TRAXX P140 AC
In Luxembourg CFL operates 20 locomotives.
TRAXX P160 AC
The TRAXX P160 AC is the passenger version of this class, with a correspondingly higher top speed of 160 km/h,
with lower unsprung mass achieved through the use of hollow shaft final drive replacing the axle hung motor
arrangement in the freight version. The bogies and drive unit are the same as used in the DBAG Class 146[3]
In Germany DB Regio acquired 32 units between 2003 and 2005, where they are designated DBAG Class 146.1.
Additionally LVNG (Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen mbH, (Hannover) ) has 10 units which are
leased to the railway company metronom (operating as ME146)[13]

At the same time as the introduction of demonstrator loco 185 561 for the F140 AC2 class another new type was
introduced: this was the locomotive SBB Re484 001; the first TRAXX unit that could operate under AC and DC
electrified catenaries. As well as the 15/25kV AC supplies the new model also could be operated under 3kV DC
overhead electrification schemes.
Later models also supported a 1.5kV supply. The general type name given by Bombardier was TRAXX F140
MS[24] (MS for Multi-System).
Excluding the different pantographs, and electrical systems for DC operation the F140 MS systems are otherwise
identical to the contemporary dual voltage versions. However under 1.5kV DC the maximum available power is
limited to 4.0MW, although this does not affect the maximum tractive effort, which is limited by other factors. As a
consequence of the additional equipment required, the locomotives weigh approximately 1 tonne or more than their
dual voltage relatives[6] .
The locomotives are designed for cross border operations; the addition of 1.5 and 3kV DC working potentially
allows the locomotives to operate in Poland and Italy. In practice the delivered locomotives were used for work into
Switzerland and Italy, and equipped with either the Italian safety system SCMT or ETCS.
In August 2006 a new version of the TRAXX locomotive platform was introduced - overall the design was the same
- with the emphasis kept on modularity and commonality of components throughout the whole class. However to
allow the introduction of a diesel powered variant some internal, and external changes were made to the overall
design - in particular even the electric version have a hole that would be used for filling fuel tanks - rather than
producing two separate designs.[26] In terms of the electric versions the changes are essentially irrelevant.
Post 2006 many more of these multi-system were produced, this time with some for use in the Benelux countries, as
well as France and Poland, with further units being produced for Swiss/Italian traffic.

In Poland, locomotives used by PKP Cargo have been designated as the EU43 class. Units hired from Angel Trains
cargo to SNCB (Belgium) have also received the class number SNCB Class 28

TRAXX DC versions
Electric 3kV DC

In 2005 Angel Trains cargo placed an order for 10 DC electric locomotives with Bombardier, the first machine E483
001 was produced in August 2006 at Bombardier's plant in Kassel; later machines were built at Bombardier's plant in

Vado Ligure in Italy - which has become the official site for production of DC versions of the TRAXX
locomotives.[35]
Producing a single-voltage machine for internal use is cost effective. Additionally, the weight is slightly reduced
compared to the AC machines which require a particularly heavy high-voltage transformer for use with the low 16.7
Hz frequency of the 15 kV AC system.
The machines are built to the same specifications as the rest of the TRAXX family, but only have equipment for 3kV
DC - making them suitable for internal work in Italy and Poland. If necessary the machines can be rebuilt for
multi-system use.[14] [35]
Renfe Mercanias, the freight subsidiary of Renfe Operadora ordered 100 locomotives for freight use to be designated
RENFE Class 253; these are the first TRAXX locomotives to be built to anything other than standard gauge.
Additionally Trenitalia cargo has ordered 42 locomotives for freight use, which will be operated at up to 160 km/h.

The diesel version of the TRAXX platform is based on the post 2006 iteration of the design: with this version the
diesel engine (or in the case of an electric version - AC transformer or DC chokes) is centrally located. Both are
supported on a horizontal mounting plate that fits onto the main frame using the same fixtures[14] . In the diesel
version, the fuel tank occupies the same space as the transformer - central and below the main frame members.
Installed motor power is 2.2MW[4]
The diesel and electric TRAXX locomotives share the same driver cabin and control desk, body, bogies, and drive
system.[38] The maximum tractive effort is slight reduced by 30 kN to 270 kN due to the lower power of the diesel
engine.
The first orders for the diesel passenger version came from metronom via the leasing company LVNG, the company
already used TRAXX electric locomotives and required locomotives for the non-electrified Hamburg-Cuxhaven
line.order the passenger version (Designated as Class 246, Bombardiers designation TRAXX P160 DE) : 11
locomotives were ordered in 2005, delivery would take place in 2007. The first three engines were built in 2006 for
type certification, with one machine being presented officially at the InnoTrans 2006 railfair[39] The machines were
in service by late 2007.[40]
Leasing company CBrail was the first to order the freight version (as Class 285, Bombardiers' designation TRAXX
F140 DE) in 2006, the first locomotive was delivery in mid 2007, and had been cerified for use by 2008.[41]
On the 5th of December 2008 SNCF Fret placed an order for 45 TRAXX F140 DE locomotives, the order being
valued at 160 million Euros.[42] . The class are to be designated as SNCF Class BB 476000[43] . The contract
includes an option for a further 35 locomotitves.[44]
