The 99th Annual
Commencement

will be held
Friday June 10, 2016
at 7:30 p.m.
in the Big Lake
High School Gymnasium

There is no need for allocation of tickets for the

commencement ceremony. In the past, there has been
ample seating for the families of our graduates.
Immediate family, grandparents, or those needing
seating/wheelchair accommodations will be given access to
the main floor. All others should be seated in the bleachers
and/or west end of the gymnasium.
The doors will not open until 6:30 pm. We welcome you
to attend this semi-formal affair as we wish our seniors
well and congratulate their success.

Four named Students of Excellence

Submitted Article
Four Big Lake High School students
were recognized as exceptional students
at the Students of Excellence Banquet
and Recognition Ceremony hosted by
Resource Training and Solutions.
The evenings presentations began
with Mark Schmitz, executive director of
Resource Training & Solutions, welcoming everyone to the 29th annual event.
Schmitz quoted Winston Churchill saying success is going from failure to failure without the loss of enthusiasm. You
are here because you get to experience
the success of all your hard work tonight.
Certainly along the way, there have been
challenges. Some easier, some harder
than others. But, you did not let that stop
you from excelling. Keep up your enthusiasm as you head off to college and face
new challenges, Schmitz said.
Katharine Denzen, Olivia Johnson,
Sydney Nygaard, and John Thomalla
represented Big Lake Schools honorees.
They were recognized among the top
140 high school seniors across 36 high
schools.
Denzen will be attending the
University of Wisconsin, Madison and
will be majoring in Chemical
Engineering. Johnson will attend North
Dakota State University with a major in

Biological Science. Nygaard will continue her studies at the University of

Minnesota, Twin Cities and will be
majoring in Speech Pathology.
Thomalla will continue his education at
St. Cloud State University with a major
in Mechanical Engineering.
We are very proud of these students
for the academic focus and determination they have had their entire academic
career, said Principal Bob Dockendorf.
Each student recognized received a
plaque and certificate from the Governor
of Minnesota.

Top seniors to spread their wings

The top 10 percent of graduates in Big

Lake High Schools Class of 2016 are
ready for the next adventure life sends
their way.
Most of them have been students in the
Big Lake School District all their lives and
have deep roots within the Big Lake community.
They all participate in extra-curricular
activities,
band, choir, sports, NHS, onee
act play, Poetry Out Loud or Knowledge
Bowl. Many of them excel or are leaders in
-these groups or activities.
. Shealyn Abbott, who has
-been a Big Lake student all
her life, has been involved in
National Honor Society her
Junior and Senior Year,
along with four years of
choir.
Shealyn plans to attend Northwestern
University in Evanston, IL, and major in
journalism & political science.
She has many fond memories but the
one that is the fondest is ordering
Dominos in Advanced Comp with Curto
her junior year. Her favorite class was
tenth grade HP Englilsh with Mr. Purdy.
She will miss seeing her friends, but her
future plans is to move to New York City,
after college and hopefully find a job in
either broadcast or print journalism.
Advice for underclassmen; Dont limit
yourself - if theres a college you want to
go to, dont worry about acceptance rates;
anything can happen.
Jaidyn Anthoney, who has been a Big
Lake student all her life, has been involved
in NHS, Friends of Rachel,
volleyball, choir and hockey
manager. She plans to attend
College of St. Scholastica in
Duluth to major in nursing.
Her fondest high school
memory was watching Mr.
Kilpela and Mr. Purdy sing together at the
Dance-A-Thon in 11th grade. Favorite
teacher was Mr. Rohlfing because he had a
sarccastic sence of humor and he made
History an interesting class. A favorite
&
class was Human Anatomy because it got
her interested in the medical field. She will
edefinintely miss all her friends. Jaidyn sees
aher self in ten years living somewhere
lwarm as a Nurse Anesthetist and maybe
having a family. Advice to underclassmen,
go PSEO, do you best, and spend as much
time with your friends and family as you

can because high school flies by!

Kerregyn Atkinson is
another lifelong Big Lake
student, who was involved
in volleyball, track and
field, NHS, Friends of
Rachel and on the yearbook
committee. She remembers
going to all the football games and not
having a voice when I got home. Kerregyn
also plans to attend the University of St.
Thomas and will go on to law school.
Her most memorable teacher is Mrs.
Sanchez, she can make absolutely anyone
laugh. She will miss seeing her friends and
going all out with the dress up days.
Advice: make time for the ones that cant.
These years of your life are going to fly by.
Abby Beckers has participated in choir,
track and field and NHS. Following graduation, she plans attend college at the University of
Minnesota Twin Cities to
major in dance. Her favorite
teacher

Wannebo
because he made class fun
and enjoyable. Among her
fondest memories senior year homecoming week she will remember the most.
Abby sees herself in ten years, with a family, having her own dance studio.
Adrinna Burrows has
been involved in Friends of
Rachel, NHS, Pep band,
Solo & Ensemble competition, during the 12 years she
has spent as a Big Lake student. Adrinna plans to go on
to college.
One of her favorite classes was
Environmental studies. She will miss sessing her friends everyday, who she wont
see in college.
Take two or more college classes, and
at least one study hall, Adrinna says.
Amanda Campbell is
another lifelong Big Lake
student who has been
involved in softball, NHS
and student council. She
plans to attend Mankato
State and looks forward to
being married and owning several golden
retrievers.
Her favorite class was any gym class
with her twin sister Alexa. She wants to
thank all the teachers and staff who made
high school fun.

Ashley Chouinard has

been a lifelong Big Lake student, and got involved right
away in
NHS, Prom
Committee and a Volleyball
Manager for three years. She
plans to attend St. Cloud
State University.
Dont procrastinate on any assignments
no matter how simple it is Ashley advises.
In ten years Ashley can see her having a
successful career that she will enjoy.
Raymon Cisneros plans
for the future is to attend
University Of WisconsinMadison and play soccer.
Involved in track and field,
soccer, DECA, Knowledge
Bowl and NHS, his favorite
memory is section game against
Hermantown.
Ill miss soccer and hanging with my
friends, he said.
He will also miss Mr. Loecken, and his
favorite class is gym.
Katharine Denzen has
plans to attend University of
Madison-Wisconsin
to
major in chemical engineering. Her favorite class was
chemistry and her favorite
memories are making new
friends. Katharine was also active NHS,
Student Council and Knowledge Bowl.
Dont sweat the small stuff, she says.
Bonnie Doucette is also a
member of the yearbook and
treble choir and plans to
continue her apprenticeshiop at UMC in Monticello,
while attending St. Cloud
Technical to become a
machinist.
Among her favorite Big Lake memories
are pottery with Ms. Forsberg. She always
made it so fun and she was a very good
teacher.
Nick Freeman, who has
been involved in NHS, basketball and Concert Band.
He plans to attend Dakota
State in Madison, S.D. to
major in computer science.
His favorite class was concert band. Nick stated he will probably
miss the most is the band concerts.

Hannah Fussy has been

involved with Big Brothers
Big Sisters, Jazz Band,
Musical PIT Band, NHS,
Friends of Rachel Club and
Special Olympics Bowling.
She plans to attend
University of Minnesota Morris to study
Psychology and plans to be an
Occupational Therapist. Her favorite
memory is the final band concert, all of us
seniors surprised Mrs. Olson by playing
two songs we had played in sixth grade.
I will miss the friends Ive made in all
four years at high school. I will miss their
support and our inside jokes, said
Hannah.
Sonja Gerdts enjoyed
playing in the Jazz Band,
Wind Ensemble and was on
the cross country team. She
plans
to
attend
the
University of Wisconsin-La
Crosse and major in microbiology. In ten years she plans to be holding a steady job as a microbiologist, being
married and having had some exciting
adventures. Advice to the underclassmen working hard and staying on top of things
will pay off.
Morgan Ireland has been
a participant in swim and di
ve, speed and strength and
NHS. She plans to attend the
University of WisconsinnLa Cross. She also hopes to
be a successful physical
therapist, having a family and also a few
dogs. Her favorite high school memory is
homecoming week and senior prom. Her
favorite teacher is Mr. Froiland with
Human Biology.

the most of your time here, the advice

Logan Karls plans to attend the University of Minnesota - Twin

Cities, persuing Chemical Engineering. Logan has participated in
Cross Country, Baseball, NHS and Track and Field. Fondest memory
is cross country with the upperclassmen. Logans favorite class was
computer programming with Mr. Holthaus, but he says he will miss
seeing his friends every day and the after school sports.
Sierra Kooistra plans to work full-time this summer, until she
leaves for college in August. She was in jazz, band, NHS, volleyball
in 9th and 10th grade and Band. Her favorite memories there is to
many to count, but they pretty much all have to do with her
chemistry lab group. Chemistry was definitely her favorite class, it
was challenging yet intriguing and my lab group made it really fun!
She wants to travel the world, drinking in the remarkable beauty all
around her.
Madison LaQua has been here since the sixth grade. She has been
involved with volleyball, trap shooting, NHS and concert band.
Madison plans to attend NDSU for an animal science degree on a
Pre-Vet track. She plans on becoming a large animal vet. Her favorite
class was anything that Mr. Froiland taught. She loves science and all
of his classes related to a form of biology so she enjoyed them a lot.
Kelsey Nelson joined Big Lake as a kindergarten. She has
participated in NHS, Cross Country, Basketball, Track and Field
Kelsey plans to major in Biology at Gustavus. Her favorite class
was Human Biology with Froiland. Fondest memory, exploding our
chemistry lab in Bowens class. She will miss the most watching
football games, playing basketball with her teammates and seeing her
friends everyday. Advice Stay motivated and do your homework.:
In 10 years Kelsey can she herself having a family and working in a
career that she loves.
Sydney Nygaard is a life-long Big Laker who plans to attend the
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and study speech-languagehearing science to become a speech pathologist. Sydney was the the
swim team, student council, knowledge bowl, yearbook, NHS and
choir. Her favorite class is CIC intro to lit with Mrs. Curto because
she discovered her favorite book. Sydney says she will miss homecoming and sno-daze week, high school football games and her
friends. Advice The school is full of resources, such as the counselors, teachers and the library. Use them,! she said.
John Thomalla enjoyed playing baseball and football. He plans to
attend SCSU for Mechanical Engineering.
In 10 years I see myself still in school, he said.
John will miss seeing the people he has grown up with. Fondest
memory was Mr. Barris watermelon patch. Advice for underclassmen: Dont be lazy. Just show up to class and youll pass.
Megan Wendlant has been with Big Lake since her freshman year.
She has been involved with NHS, Jazz Band, Volleyball and Friends
of Rachel. She plans to attend SCUS to major in Electrical
Engineering. Many fond memories but the one she remembers the
most is the jazz festivals. Always had so much fun playing for other
schools. Mr. Purdy her favorite teacher, he always knew how to keep
the students engaged while he was teaching Englilsh. She will miss
most that she could learn for free from great teachers and see her best
friends all day.
Kailee Williams has been with Big Lake since kindergarten. She
has been involved with NHS, softball, wrestling and soccer. She
plans to attend SCUS to major in Criminal Justice and Forensics.
Winning the ACGC tournament with her wrestling family is one of
her fondest memory. Favorite class Human Biology with Froiland,
favorite teacher Holthaus. She will miss sports for sure! And managing wrestling! Advice for underclassmen: Do PSEO!

Gavin L. Vu attended Big Lake since sixth

grade. He has participated in football, soccer,
ski & snowboard club and Knowledge Bowl.
He plans to work as much as he can during the
summer and will attend UofM in the fall. He
has so many great memories its hard to choose
a specific one. For the most part he loved
everything about high school. Concert band was his favorite
class, and really enjoyed playing music. He will miss just
being able to see and hangout with his friends everyday. In ten
years he sees himself hopefully with a career in engineering
that he can be proud of and enjoy. Advice: Be have and be
respectful to teachers, you will be able to get away with more.
