From the Editor

The Clearwater and Clear Lake communities, Clear Valley Business Connections
and the Tribune and Citizen staff present to
you the 2016 Clearwater-Clear Lake
Communities Guide.
Up front, we want to thank the merchants
and organizations of the community for
their advertising support for this guide; it
would not be possible without their continued financial support.
And as we turn the corner into the mid-months of 2016, we
sense a continuing strength in the community spirit. New
businesses are opening, existing businesses are making
expansions and getting stronger.
They are a major part of the fiber of our communities patronize them. They are the folks who pay their large share
of taxes to support our schools, our cities and our townships
with the services we need.
Inside this issue of the Clearwater-Clear Lake Community
Guide you will find five new feature stories.
Ken Francis has composed a story on the Legion Riders,
comprised of Clearwater and other riders who do a number
of projects each year to support veterans and the local community.
Dr. Vicki Kelner of the Clearwater Pet Clinic has been on
the block (in the shopping center) for many years and continues to bring her brand of warm and friendly medicine to local
pets and their owners.
And, the continuing use of solar energy by Clearwater City,
and its paying ahead. Theyve been involved in several projects and are making money for the residents.
Penny Leuthard has produced stories on Clearview School,
nominated this year as one of the very best elementary
schools in the region, and the Clearwater Lions and Lioness
and their involvement in Camp Friendship. Camp Friendship
has long been receiver of the Lions warm financial and spiritual attention.

Your Hometown Newspaper Team!

Susan Nagorski, longtime Clearwater Tribune advertising

sales staffer, has again headed up the planning and publishing of this guide. We appreciate her dedication to the community and to her work for our newspapers.
Ken Francis is also no new face to the Guide readers. He
has been with the Tribune and now Citizen-Tribune for 15- almost 16 - years.
Penny Leuthard came on board in January to serve our
newly-merged Sherburne County Citizen and Clearwater
Tribune, succeeding the retiring David Hannula. And, she
hasnt missed a beat. Youll see her face in the community as
much as Kens.
So, your new merged newspaper?
It was for two reasons that we combined the two newspapers at the outset of the year.
We were seeing too much duplication of effort with printing and distributing two newspapers in essentially the same
geographic area, so that resulted in the merger.
But combining the Citizen and the Clearwater Tribune has
been giving the readers a more robust, more complete newspaper.
A newspaper that fills more needs.
We hope you like it.
Its been a good merger from our perspective.
And to repeat a thought as a final thought.
Communities arent like home unless there are people
within them who see the need to help their neighbors - and
above all - have fun doing it.
We see that in Clearwater and Clear Lake every week.
Were happy and proud to write about it, because were
writing about you.
Best Regards,

Your Clearwater & Clear Lake Communities Guide production team!

Senior Living
CENTRAL MINNESOTA
FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM
Allowing children and seniors to mutually
benefit from an intergenerational relationship
Catholic Charities Foster Grandparent Program provides the
opportunity for stipend volunteers age 55+ to make a lasting
contribution to their community by mentoring children in
100+ nonprofit volunteer sites across Central Minnesota.
Foster Grandparents volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per
week; many give up to 40 hours. Annually, 220 Foster
Grandparents serve 8,000 of children for a total of 180,000
hours of service. Volunteer Sites often say that they don't
know how they would ever replace their Foster Grandparents
because of all of the good that they do.
Providing a valuable "natural" resource
Foster Grandparents are valuable resources for children and
for their Volunteer Sites. They offer wisdom and the benefit of
their knowledge, various talents, and experience to children
and to the service site. Often a Foster Grandparent fills a void
left in a child's life when his/her own grandparents live at a
distance or are deceased. A Foster "Grandma" or "Grandpa"
gives each special child valuable one-on-one attention,
encouragement, and unconditional love.
Offering themselves in service
to Central Minnesota's children
Foster Grandparents volunteer throughout the 16 Central
Minnesota counties served by Catholic Charities of the
Diocese of St. Cloud: Benton, Douglas, Grant, Isanti,
Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Otter Tail, Pope, Sherburne,
Stearns, Stevens, Todd, Traverse, Wadena, and Wilkin counties. Children in these counties are waiting for their Foster
Grandparent. There is always a need to register more Foster
Grandparent volunteers and more service sites.

Pets are family at

Kelner Animal Hospital

Dr. Vicki Kelner and Jam, one of the rescued cats that has
found a home at the animal hospital.
By Ken Francis
Staff Writer
It used to be Annandale State Bank.
Now its the home of something just as valuable - the Kelner
Animal Hospital in Clearwater.
Dr. Vicki Kelner and staff have been taking care of peoples
pets for more than 25 years, and it might be that way for
another 25.
As long as I feel like Im contributing and helping people,
Ill be right here, says Kelner.
Kelner did her undergraduate work at St. Cloud State and
graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in
veterinary medicine. She started working at the Olin Animal
Hospital in St. Paul. After two years there, she transferred to
Northern Oaks Pet Hospital in St. Cloud, working with Dr.
Ganz in St. Cloud.
About a year into that we decided to open clinics in
Clearwater and Sartell, says Kelner.
But in 2007 the animal hospital was acquired as part of the
new Sauk Rapids bridge project.
My partner retired and I decided I didnt want to run three
sites anymore, says Kelner, so I took this small clinic and
turned it into the hospital you see today.
The original clinic was just the small bank building. But
during the remodeling, it was incorporated into the new
building. It now serves as the kennel. An x-ray room and surgery room were added to make the old clinic into a modern
pet hospital.
Kelner says she knew at a very young age she wanted to
work with animals.
At no time do I remember not wanting to be a veterinari-

an, she says. Its always been a dream of mine.

She likes the fact that she can do all aspects of veterinary
medicine.
It allows me to do many things. You can be a small practitioner, which is how I categorize myself, she says.
Today, veterinarians can do small and large animal medicine or can specialize in one species or even a part of the
anatomy.
We had generalized small clinics when I graduated, says
Kelner. Now we have specialty clinics -cats only, opthalmology, dermatology. There are three or four specialists in the
state that only do dentistry all day long.
Technology has also changed in the past 25 years. There are
more diagnostic tools, medication, treatment options and
information available about pet diseases.
Kelner says she doesnt want to specialize. She would rather
continue to do what shes been doing since she became a veterinarian - treating animals and educating their owners.
We do a lot of wellness exams. There is a high tick population and a high mosquito population, so preventative medicine is a very big thing, she says. We dont want your dog
to get lyme disease or anaplasmosis or heartworm, so helping
people learn protection is a very important part of our job.
Rescuing animals is also part of their job. People often bring
in animals theyve found, hoping to find them a home.
Last year we rescued six cats and a couple of dogs, says
Kelner. All the cats here are rescues.
One of the most challenging aspects of veterinary medicine
is doctor/patient communication. With human medicine, the
patient can usually tell the doctor whats wrong. Its not the
same with animals.
I have to rely on my clients. We have to ask a lot of questions, says Kelner.
We do a lot of detective work.
She must be asking the right questions, because Kelner has
multiple generations of clients and their pets walking through
the door. Some of her clients from 25 years ago are still bringing pets in.
I like stability and I think the clients do, she says.
Part of that stability comes from the familiar faces of her
staff, some of whom have been there for more than 10 years.
They include Robyn Sorlien, Sarah Mohr, Colleen Lundholm
and Barb Jensen.
Theyre all part of the family, as are members of the community and their pets.
Kelner said she had a chance many years ago in veterinarian school to do specialty work instead of general practice.
She says setting up a full service hospital was the best thing
she ever did.
The surgeon told me I would get tired of puppies and kittens in about three years, she says.
I never get tired of puppies and kittens.
Kelner Animal Hospital is located at 615 Clearwater Center
(off Co. Rd. 75). It opens 7:30 a.m. each day and stays open
until 5:30 Monday and Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and
Thursday and 5 p.m. Friday.

The park is perfect for hikers, backpackers, horseback
riders, and cross-country skiers who enjoy the challenge of
the rolling terrain. Take a stroll on the boardwalk which winds
through a marsh.
Backpack sites, located on remote lakes and ponds
throughout the park, are just two miles from the trailhead
parking lot. New log camper cabins, located near lakes and
ponds, provide bunk beds for six people and a table and
benches for campers who want more of the creature comforts.
Lake Maria State Park is home to the Blandings turtle,
easily identified by bright yellow spots on its shell. It is one of
Minnesota's threatened species.
Lake Maris State Park is located at 11411 Clementa Avenue,
N.W., Monticello, MN.

Office/store: 320.558.8123 www.cwoutfitting.com
Established in 2009, CW Outfitting is the only Central
Minnesota canoe and kayak retail store and outfitter on the
banks of the Mississippi River.
CW Outfitting is extremely fortunate to be located on a
special stretch of the Mississippi River and we cannot help but
want to share it with you. Designated "Wild & Scenic" by the
DNR, many miles along this stretch are still in their natural
state due to the protection, regulations, and zoning that are
associated with this title. Very few river stretches have this
designation and protection.
This stretch of the Mississippi River is shallow with a rocky
bottom - poor conditions for motor boats but ideal for fishing,
canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding. With a
gently flowing current void of any rapids, dams or falls, the
paddling is relaxing and the fishing is spectacular. According
to Field and Stream Online, the 47 mile stretch of the
Mississippi between St. Cloud and Dayton (which includes
our stretch) is in the top 10 for river fishing for smallmouth in
the United States. Many consider it world class due to the
limited motor traffic, river accessibility, and special fishing
regulations.

Clearview Elementary succeeds with

strong parent and community involvement
By Penny Leuthard,
Staff Writer
Named as one of the Top 12
Central Minnesota elementary schools,
Clearview Elementary School in Clear
Lake lives up to its ranking.
Serving students in preschool
through grade six, Clearview is located
on State Hwy. 24 between Clearwater
and Clear Lake. The school offers manageable class sizes, which ensure
teachers are able to engage and work
hands-on with each child. Their students continually meet or exceed MCA
test standards in reading and math.
Clearview has two student computer
labs, and continually looks for ways to
integrate technology into the classroom. Theyre connected to the internet, online libraries, Google Apps and
other educational software that promotes higher level thinking skills. Sixth
graders use Inspire 1:1, a program in
which each student is provided an iPad
to enhance personalized learning by
accessing materials online and completing and submitting homework electronically.
Clearview offers students a wide
range of academic achievement opportunities. Fifth and sixth graders are able
to participate in the US Academic
Triathlon, which is called cross training for young minds, and Science
Rocks, a presentation and hands-on
learning conference held at St. Cloud
State University. Fifth graders can join
orchestra, and in sixth grade students
can also join band.
Students in grades three through five
can be a part of YaYa, Young Authors,
Young Artists. Spanish Club is open to
all students after school, and there are
also opportunities in Knowledge Bowl,
Math Masters, Word Masters and
Student Council. The Boys & Girls Club
of St. Cloud offers a KIDSTOP program
after school, and community education
events take place monthly.
Clearview also has numerous service
learning outreach programs, including
community food drives and blood
drives. One of their most successful
outreach programs is the partnership

theyve developed with St. Benedicts

Senior Center and Talahi Senior Center,
in which fourth grade students visit residents there twice a month.
In 2007 Clearview added their
Spanish Immersion program, which
continues to grow in popularity. The
program introduces Spanish to students
in kindergarten, and after the first
month students are learning and speaking only in Spanish while in the classroom.
This continues into first grade, and
starting in second grade students are
introduced to English during language
arts for 30 minutes a day. In third
through sixth grade the time spent on
English gradually increases.
Clearview students are able to experience different cultures first hand

come from foreign countries to spend the school year with
students who are learning to speak their native language, and
are similar to student teachers in that they both assist and
learn how to be teachers themselves.
While the Spanish immersion students gain the unique
experience of having native speakers in their classrooms, all
Clearview students benefit by learning about other countries
from those who actually live there.
We have a very qualified staff that really works at meeting

have incredible support from parents, our PTA, and the surrounding communities.

City of Clearwater
Allow me to brag about our
outstanding city- Clearwater!
2016 is off to a great start Heres
whats happening on our stretch of the
MississippiLast year saw huge upgrades at our
Lions Park, with new playground equipment and increased parking added. Our
Park Board is again working hard this
year as they continue planning and
moving ahead with other improvements throughout the city. Its
a great time to venture outside and play!
Also, the new bridge construction over the Mississippi River
started last year, and is scheduled to be done in 2017. One of the
great positives with this project is that the new bridge is being
built next to the existing one, allowing traffic to continue as normal with no delays.
The past couple of years the theme in our city has been improving the quality of life in Clearwater. We have many local and area
residents working together to make that happen, serving on various boards and committees as they seek out ways to make positive changes. Adding to that is another group that continues to
be a big part of Clearwaters success; our volunteer fire department. It was another great year of safety, service, and community events from our CWFD!
As you travel through town, you cant help but notice our
vibrant business community. Your support of local businesses
helps keep Clearwater healthy and thriving. Without the generous
financial support from them throughout the year, many great causes and events like our Festival and Rodeo wouldnt be the success
that they are. The next time you shop local, take a moment to
thank them for everything they do for our community.
And I cant forget to mention all the civic organizations that our
city is blessed to have; the Clearwater American Legion, the
Clearwater Lions Club, the Food Shelf, and the Friends of the
Library to name a few. Their presence in our community through
financial donations and untold hours of volunteering and community service is irreplaceable. Consider getting involved with
them and join them in doing great things!
As always, I invite you to stay connected with everything going
on by exploring our city website and Facebook page.
Have a great year!
Clearwater- Strong Heritage, Bright Future

Legion Riders dedicated

to helping our veterans
By Ken Francis
Staff Writer
The long line of motorcycles riding through Clearwater has
become a pretty common event for almost 10 years.
Thats about when the Clearwater Legion Riders formed, and
theyve been a welcome addition to the community ever since.
Were not the bad biker bunch. Were the fun ones, says
Riders director Stewart (Stew) Erickson.
The group currently has 49 members, and theyre all members of the Legion Family that includes the American Legion,
Sons of the American Legion or Legion Auxiliary.
The only other qualifications, says Erickson, are a license,
insurance and a motorcycle.
The group formed in 2007 with 13 charter members: Kat
Radunz, Stewart Erickson, James Theisen, Lynea Theisen, Scott
Searcy, Jesse Zeman, Jeanne Zeman, Gary Seeley, Lori
Erickson, Dan Sipola, Trace McCoy, Lisa McCoy and Butch
Ergen.
That number has grown over the years, and so has their participation in events to raise money to support veterans.
We do a lot with the VA, says Erickson. They went to war
and have been there for us. So were doing what we can for
them.
One of the first fundraising events the Riders took part in was
the 2008 Homeless Vets Ride. Riders went from the Clearwater
Legion to the St. Cloud VA Hospital and escorted three bus-

loads of veterans back to the Legion for a meal and music.
Thats been going on ever since and has grown over the years.
Riders pay $20 to ride and passengers pay $10 each. There
is also a silent auction and gun raffle. Members of the community are also invited to share the meal at $10 each and theres
lots of participation from local businesses who donate to the
cause.
We had about 50 walk-ins last year, says Erickson.
Until years ago, all the proceeds from the Homeless Vets
Ride, about $13,000 a year, went directly to the VA. Thats
changed.
The last two years weve given to VA, the Salvation Army
Homeless Vets Program and Eagles Healing Nest in Sauk
Centre, says Erickson.

MEMBERS OF THE CLEARWATER Legion Riders at the

start of the 3 of a Kind Ride near the Legion Club.
And over the last two years, the Riders have taken it one step
further.
We heard at the VA that some homeless vets were being
turned away after hours or on weekends, says Erickson. So
we started our own program to make sure that wouldnt happen.
They set aside $3,500 from the Homeless Vets Ride and put
it into an emergency account. Three Rider members have
access to the account with a debit card.
If they have a vet that needs to have a place to stay that
night we call the hotel to put them up for the night, says
Erickson. Its being used and its helping guys.
The account also helped one veteran who was being
deployed pay part of his rent so he wouldnt be evicted.
Each summer, the Riders work in conjunction with the
Clearwater Travel Plaza during a huge customer/
employee/veterans appreciation day event. The Riders escort
busloads of veterans from the St. Cloud VA to the Travel Plaza,
then roll out the red carpet as the vets exit the buses to a standing ovation. Everyone gets a free dinner.
The Riders have a number of fundraising events throughout
the year they either sponsor or work in partnership with other
groups, including a flower sale the Saturday before Mothers
Day, chili cookoff, Game Day, the Spring Ride, the Thanks for
Freedom Ride, Three of a Kind Run, Heritage Days Parade,
monthly breakfasts at the Legion, Christmas Central shopping
at the Legion, a Toys for Tots collection and New Years Eve
party at St. Cloud VA.
The New Years Eve celebration has become a very personal
experience for many of the Riders.
We bring up pizza, ice cream, pop and lots prizes, says
Erickson. It was bigger last year - about 30 people.
The Riders spend time with the veterans on an evening when
most people are celebrating with their families. Erickson says
the Riders can tell the veterans appreciate how the Riders gave
up their evening to be with them.
You do it to see the smiles on their faces, he says. We do
it because it makes them feel good.

City of Clear Lake

As Mayor and on behalf of our citizens, it is my pleasure to welcome you
to Clear Lake, a city on the move.
Clear Lake is located at Highways 10

amenities of St. Cloud, yet distant
enough to provide a small-town
lifestyle. Clear Lake is rich in history
and loved by all who have been
touched by its warmth, charm and
friendliness.
Tim Goenner
We have a lot on our plate for 20162017. First project being installing new
Mayor
playground equipment at Goenner
Park, we look forward to seeing the little ones play on it this
summer. Second, we will continue to work with the railroad
for a quiet zone, in the Spring MN/Dot will be installing barriers for safety purposes, which is a move in the right direction in working towards the completion for a quiet zone.
Lastly As Mayor I will continue to work with the Council
and Staff to better our community for everyone.
As a lifelong resident of Clear Lake, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our City. It is truly a special place to visit, work,

Legion Riders Continued From Page 22_________

Membership has dropped off a bit for the Clearwater Riders
in the past few year, but not because of lack of interest. Nearby
cities like Monticello, Maple Lake and Zimmerman have
started their own Riders groups, drawing some Clearwater riders from those areas.
Its catching on what the Legion Riders are all about, says
Erickson. Theyre not just boozing and cruising, theyre out
there helping people and raising money for good things.
Some of this years events include: May 30 - Memorial Day
ride; June 18 - Thanks for Freedom Ride and Concert Event;
July 12 - Clearwater Travel Plaza event; July 16 - Three of a
Kind Run; August 5 - Heritage Day Parade; August 27 Homeless Vets Run; Dec. 31 - New Years Eve at the VA.
Anyone interested in joining the Clearwater Legion Riders is
encouraged to attend one of their monthly meetings the first
Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Legion.

Power to the people

By Ken Francis
Staff Writer
The sun doesnt always shine on
Clearwater, but when it does, everybody in
the city benefits.
Thats because of an investment in solar
power the city made a few years ago.
In June 2013, Mayor Pete Edmonson introduced the idea of installing solar panels at
different locations after learning about a system that lowered the City of Royaltons utility costs.
In 2009, Royalton received a $33,600
Schools and Local Governments Grant funded by the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) for its
solar installation. That covered 40% of the
cost and a $16,000 rebate from Minnesota
Power helped fund the installation.
Combined with energy-saving lighting
upgrades, that citys annual electric bill was
reduced by one-third.

a nine-month period ending Sept., 2015, that system proinstalled.
At that meeting, the council agreed to have Randall apply duced 34.6 MWh and earned approximately $4,491.90.
Administrator Kevin Kress said the system was producing

Clearwater Lions and Camp

Friendship have 28-year partnership
By Penny Leuthard
In 1988 Camp Friendship had a need and the Clearwater
Lions answered. Since that time the two have had a partnership thats 28 years strong.
Camp Friendships mission is to provide life-changing experiences that increase independence and self-esteem for children and adults with disabilities. Opening in 1964, the camp
is located near Annandale on Clearwater Lake, and is now a
part of the non-profit organization True Friends.
Chartered in 1978, the Clearwater Lions mission is to
improve the quality of life in Clearwater by supporting community activities and organizations. Camp Friendship is one
way they live out this mission.
Camp Friendship is a fully accessible and offers campers
modern cabins and facilities, a dining hall, arts and crafts
building, recreational hall, nature building, gymnasium,
indoor pool, climbing wall, ropes course and more.
As of 2012, Camp Friendship and Camp Courage have provided camp, respite and travel services to nearly 3,000 individuals
and
their families
each year.
Many of
these families
have returned
year after year.
Angi Jensen,
whose daughter has been
going to Camp
THE NANCY IRVIN arts & crafts center Friendship for
adopted by the Clearwater Lions
nearly
30
years, expressed it was a great camp with caring staff, many
who have been there as long as her daughter has been going.
Without donations and volunteers, the camp wouldnt be
able to fulfill their mission.
One of the ways organizations help Camp Friendship is to
adopt one of their many buildings and take responsibility
for them. According to marketing director Julie Fasching, their
arts and crafts building is one of their buildings that is used
year round by many groups for a variety of things, and is the
building the Clearwater Lions have taken under their wing.
Our main project at Camp Friendship is their arts and
crafts building, said Clearwater Lions president Jack Keuchle.
We repair it yearly and have completely remodeled it over
the years, including the kitchen and bathroom around five
years ago.
Besides the care of the arts and crafts building, the
Clearwater Lions have donated a lot of money and effort into
the entire camp. Theyve installed energy efficient doors on
the camps buildings, helped with the dining hall, the program center, the DeGross building and remodeling of the
lodge.
The group serves ice cream at ice cream socials throughout

the summer where they enjoy interacting with the campers.
Theyve grilled the steaks at the camps annual steak fry for
over 20 years, and recently donated a large sum of money to
help them receive an LCIF (Lions Clubs International
Foundation) grant.
The LCIF grant enables True Friends to create a ropes and
zip line course at Camp Courage that is the first of its kind in
the nation. The course incorporates technology so that everybody, regardless of ability or whether or not they use a wheelchair, uses a seat when they zip line, allowing every participant to have the exact same experience. The course is schedLions Continued On Page 39

CLEARWATER FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Clearwater Fire Department (CWFD) goal is to
serve and protect both life and property of the citizens and visitors of the city of Clearwater and Lynden
and Clearwater townships.
CWFD is structured with a Chief, Assistant Chief,
two Captains, 4 Lieutenants and 18 fire fighters.
Many of our fire fighters are able to respond during
the day due to the flexibility of their employers.
Several members live in the townships and carry
medical bags and AEDs in their vehicles. This
improves our flexibility, shortens our response time
and may save someones life.
CWFD is prepared to respond to emergency calls
24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In addition to fire
suppression, the department provides first responder
emergency medical services, vehicle accident extrication as well as water/ice rescue service.
Additionally, many members of our department
possess a variety of specialty training so that we may
provide the best possible response to the many emergencies that we are called upon for. We have personnel trained in fire investigation, hazardous materials

uled to be completed by the time summer camp opens this year on June 5.
The True Friends organization stated
that over the years, the Clearwater
Lions have donated roughly $300,000
to their endeavors. This amount doesnt include all their volunteer hours.
Ed Strachke, president and CEO of
True Friends, stressed that the organization is very grateful for their support.
Whenever there was a need they
[Clearwater Lions] would step up, he
said. Theyre really committed both
from a dollar standpoint and with volunteering. Its very appreciated, which
I hope they realize.
The Clearwater Lions are looking for
new members to join them in helping
the community. If interested, meetings
are held the second Tuesday of each
month at 8 p.m. at the Lions Pavilion.
