T
Tiger Pride
Fall 2016
Final Systematic Observation Report
Overview
As and E.T. for the Fall 2016 semester for Tiger Pride, it was my job to provide Julio
Cervantes and Freda Pu with help and support with teaching lesson. Also, it was my job
to help provide them with data based analysis of their teaching performances throughout
the semester. For Julio Cervantes class, we worked with 3rd graders and in Fredas class
we worked with 4th grade students at Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton, CA.
Both of these groups were awesome throughout the semester. There was always so much
energy that sometimes these groups would get distracted because of their energy level
and running too much was a problem.
Both groups were lead into lessons of football, soccer, badminton, dancing, volleyball,
track and field, and ultimate Frisbee. Gameplay was not the major component, but
learning the basic motor skills of the activity was key point to the lessons. During this,
the Evaluation Team had to videotape and record systematic observation forms to go
along with what we recorded. Most importantly, these forms provided the best advice for
the D.T.s. Then at the end of each week, we would meet and discuss what we did well,
what went wrong, and what can we do to get better as a group.
The following paragraphs will provide you with report on the performances on both Julio
Cervantes (Time Analysis) and Freda Pu ( SOFIT), using the summaries of the best
Systematic Observations forms I completed. By analyzing the data as a whole it is easier
to find trends, averages and common tendencies of the teacher in questions.
Time Analysis
The time analysis was the most effective way to read if the lesson was effective. It can
tell us how much time a student was engaged in a activity, listening to instructions, or
how managed the lesson was. Though management doesnt exist in an actual lesson plan
it was recorded when the D.T. was not focusing on the actual lesson but only at the kids
behaviors. Having too much time managing should raise concerns about the overall
lesson.

Time Analysis

Management (69%)
Instructions (19%)
Activity (12%)

For the data that I presented, I used the first week of Tiger Pride for Julio Cervantes. As
we can see, he spent a long Tiger Pride, and getting use to the kids were more important
than actually getting them engaged. Julio spent most of his time trying to make a
statement addressing rules and routines for the students so they know what the
expectations are. This was very important because throughout the semester, the students
knew what the expectations were and followed accordingly. I think he had less trouble
than other teachers because the students knew the consequences of misbehaving even
though Julio had to remind them for the next week or two after. I think he did a really
good job starting off this way because it wasnt about getting the students active, though
he did give them a chance too, but he wanted to show his presents and what Tiger Pride
was going to be about. This helped the students follow directions and act in a good
manner.
Time Analysis

Time Analysis (W8)

Management (46%)
Instruction (9%)
Activity (45 %)

For the data I presented, I used the last week of Tiger Pride. As we can see, he used less
of his time giving instructions and having the students be active. This differs from the
previous chart because at this time, we worked on improving by adding more time into
activity and less time into instructions and that is what we did. Though management was
still the highest, this was a really big improvement from an 8 week period. The group
that we had was very energetic and it was sometimes hard to keep them under control.
This impacted the students a lot in my opinion because they got the chance to be in a
Physical Education class and it got them to socialize with each other and work as a team.
Also, they worked on specific motor skills that improved a lot from week 1.
SOFIT
For the SOFIT this was to measure the MVPA, known as Moderate to Vigorous
Physical Activity. For each lesson, students should be about 50 % in MVPA. Watching
the lesson, for each 10 seconds, you would mark down yes/no depending on if the
students are engaged or not. Once finished, you would calculate it and find the total
percentage/time of physical activity.

For the data I presented, I used a couple dates throughout the semester of Tiger Pride. I
think Freda did a really good job putting a lesson plan together but struggled to perform
the lesson plan. I think that affected how much movement the students were engaged
because I thought she felt lost sometimes. But I do compliment her because through the
middle to the end, the graph shows that the MVPA does rises, meaning that she got the
student engaged in the lesson. There was a final drop at the end and I think this is because
of the thanksgiving break, so since the students are coming back to Tiger Pride after a
week of not being there, they may seem like they didnt want to do anything. Something
to improve next time I think is getting them active quickly. Theyre almost at an age
where theyre close to hitting puberty and they may seem like they dont want to do
anything, but keeping them active and engaged is the best.

Closure
One of the hardest things about this is relying on your partners and I think that is
one flaw that we faced all year. Another thing is the way we had to videotape. I believe
that we need to catch up to technology and use I-Pads because this will be more
convenient and less work for both parties. Other than that, this semester has been great.
It gives use pedagogy majors something to look forward to and it gives us advice on what
we need to do in the near future as to teaching. Not only that, the forms that we
completed each week are essential to us improving each week, and with out those, how
are we too tell how well we preformed and what we need to do. Utilizing these tools that
are given to us will impact us a lot if we choose to do or not to do. Only we can benefit
from our own work that we put in.
