Assignment 10

Part Two and Three

Eduard Gavril

Part Two:
Gerboth, Walter. An Index to Musical Festschriften and Similar Publications. 2nd ed. New
York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1969.
The first chapter of the book is a list of Festschriften ordered by the celebrated persons
name, in alphabetical order. The second chapter contains lists of Festschriften, classified by
subject, time period, geographic location etc. Chapter three is an index by author and subject to
the articles in the second chapter. Although this is the second edition, revised and enlarged, it
remains outdated due to the year of the publishing. This book could be very useful for
researching various topics because it offers resources in an organized manner, that would
otherwise be difficult to find just by dedication or author.
Part Three:
Ewell, Terry B. Celebrating Double Reeds: A Festschrift for William Waterhouse and Philip
Bate. Baltimore: J.W. Boarman Company, 2009.
(ML 931. C45 2009)
This book contains articles by various authors on subjects concerning instruments,
pedagogy, historical events and other topics related to double reed instruments. This Festschrift is
dedicated to William Waterhouse and Philip Bate. The first one was a distinguished English
bassoonist and musicologist, professor at the Royal Northern College of Music and contributor to
the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Philip Bate was born in Glasgow on March
26, 1909 and was a musicologist, broadcaster and collector of musical instruments. They were
both members and co-founders of the Double Reed International Society and described in the
preface as being great contributors to research in history and technical aspects of double reed
instruments. The author of the Festschrift, Terry B. Ewell is former president of The International
Double Reed Association, Professor of bassoon and music theory at Towson
University Department of Music from Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. He received
special recognition as a performer, teacher, scholar, and administrator. The articles are written in
an academic style and are all in English.
Burstein, L. Poundie, and David Gagne. Structure and Meaning in Tonal Music: Festchrift
in Honor of Carl Schachter. Hillsdale, NY: Pendragon Press, 2006.
(ML 55. S3565 2006)
This book contains essays by various authors and most of them were presented in a
symposium in honor of Carl Schachter that was sponsored by Queens College, City University of
New York, on May 2nd, 1999. The subjects are structured into separate chapters and contain
material about musical expression, theory, style, texts in music and form. Carl Schachter is
considered one of the leading American music theorists of his generation and a very influential
musicologist through his writings but also as a teacher (Murray Perahia was one of his students).
He is also a pianist, mostly focused on collaborative. He worked as professor at Harvard

University, cole Normale Superieure de Paris, City University of New York, Mannes College of
Music where he taught Techniques of Music faculty since 1956, was Chairman of Theory
Department between 19581962, Dean of Mannes between 19621966 and Chairman of
Techniques of Music Department 19661973. He is also a professor in Juilliard School since
1998. Both editors of this book are music theorists and have showed special interest in Carl
Schachters work. They are/were colleagues with him in Mannes College of Music and
successively presidents of the Music Theory Society of New York State. Some of the essays are
written in a professional style and these are probably the ones presented during the abovementioned symposium. However, there are other essays that are written in an academic style. All
the compiled essays are in English.
