My Reflection on Math Class 1030

Math 1030 was one of the challenging and rewarding courses that I have taken at Salt
Lake Community College. The course math 1030 taught me different strategies and skills of
mathematics. One of the most important things in the mathematical world, is developing the
skills of the mathematical thinking, Quantitative Reasoning.
Quantitative Reasoning (QR) is the application of basic mathematical skills, such as algebra, to
the analysis and interpretation of real-world quantitative information in the context of a
discipline or an interdisciplinary problem to draw conclusions that are relevant to students in
their daily lives. There are three main objectives that quantitative reasoning teaches students,
disciplinary context, critical thinking, and math. The mathematical and practical applications
taught from quantitative reasoning is used every day for practical situations.
What I learned from this class was how to take mathematics and collaborate the skills to
assist me with real-world optimizing problems. This class gave me the confidence to learn new
mathematic skills and the class lectures were clear and precise. The lectures and instructions
helped me understand that there are different kinds of mathematics skills depending on different
situations.

Math 1030 gave me the experience and knowledge of the wider world of mathematical
thinking. I learned to understand the power of quantitative thinking and how the power of
numbers can help solve and deal with real world scenarios. I have now developed more
knowledge to mathematics than expressions and equations. The ten modules of the course
content consisted of: trigonometry, problem solving, voting theory, graph theory, growth models,
finance, statistics, describing data, probability, and normal distribution. Each one of these
modules was interesting and informative.
I enjoyed the voting theory module and learned how in-depth the voting process truly is.
It was interesting to know how voting theories were calculated during the 2016 Presidential
Election between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. A vote is an expression of a voter's
preference about the outcome of an election. However, using a different voting theories can
change the outcome of a groups consensus.
I have developed new abilities and skills that has made me a successful student in this
course. Although some topics were challenging they were also fascinating. I was able to apply a
variety of voting methods to determine a winner of various elections during the Presidential
Election of 2016. I now can perform calculations to relating to annuities and amortized loans and
use amortization schedules. I also can create and interpret statistical charts and tables.
Not only did this course help me overcome my fear of quantitative reasoning, it widen
my mathematical thinking and my mathematical world. I will use the new abilities and skills
from math 1030 to assist me throughout my life and career. I highly recommend other students at
Salt Lake Community College to take the course math 1030 taught by Instructor David
Burkhard.
