SM-4000 & SILICA

MONITORING
NOVEMBER 2016

MODEL SM-4000

REAL-TIME PERSONAL RESPIRABLE SILICA MONITOR

Exposure Monitoring for Silica

allows use of 4m size selective size
cyclone attached to a personal
monitoring device to collect for
respirable fraction of Silica.
The NIOSH Analytical Methods also
require use of a sampling pump to
pull sample on to a gravimetric
filter.
The SM-4000 is the only Real-Time
Personal Dust Monitor with Sensor
and Filter Cassette in the OSHA
defined Breathing Zone.

DISTINCT SENSOR FEATURES FOR SM-4000 REAL-TIME

PERSONAL RESPIRABLE SILICA MONITOR

The SM-4000 offers a miniaturized

sensor mounted in the true
breathing zone.
Sensor is sandwiched between
SKCs GS-3 Cyclone and a 37mm
Filter Cassette.
Why are these features important??
Minimal wall deposition= more
weight on filter
Easy to cross calibrate.

SILICA DATA COLLECTION

Identifies potential Silica dust problems before they become a
health concern.
37mm filter cassette placed directly behind the sensor allows
concurrent filter based samples consistent with gravimetric
methods.
Offers graphical analyses software

Time history vs. concentration graphs in real-time instantaneous

results

Real-Time profile of dust loading is not possible with traditional

pump/filter gravimetric methods alone, the addition of a
mini- sensor provides a more dynamic assessment.
Internal smart processor mathematically corrects for
differences in particulate sizes.

CALIBRATION FACTORS
The SM-4000 Real time Silica
Monitor is calibrated with
ISO12103-1 A2 Fine Test Dust
(Arizona Road Dust)
EDC can also preform special
calibrations if requested.

Silica has different particle

characteristics than Arizona
Road dust, which makes the
instrument respond differently
due to the nature of lightscattering technologies . To
compensate a correction
factor needs to be set.

Particle shape creates variance in

light scattering technique.

CALIBRATION FACTORS
Traditionally two devices would be required; a reference with a
sample pump and filter and the real-time device. The SM-4000 has
both!
Once a filter sample has been sent to a lab for analysis a
comparison is made. Once the comparison is made a correction
factor can be entered into the software, calculated by using the
following formula:

Calibration Factor =

TWA
