Major Players of Fuel Oil in the Philippines

Three fuel oil companies contribute to the majority of the demands of


the country. These major firms, namely Petron Corporation, Pilipinas Shell
Petroleum Corporation, and Chevron Philippines have contributed the
majority of the total demands of the country as of the end of 2015. Although
the contributions have decreased from the last five years, contributions still
accomodated 60.3 percent of total demands as of the end of 2015. Petron
ranked first with 30.4 percent market share, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum
followed second with the market shares of 23 percent and third is Chevron
Phil. with 6.9 percent.
1. Petron Corporation
Petron Corporation is the largest oil refining and marketing
company in the Philippines. Supplying nearly 40% of the countrys oil
requirements, its products and services serve the daily lives of
Filipinos.
Petron Corporation is an integrated crude oil refinery and
petrochemicals complex with a rated capacity of 180,000 barrels per
day in Limay, Bataan. The Integrated Management System (IMS)
certified refinery processes crude oil into a full range of petroleum
products including gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), jet
fuel, kerosene, industrial fuel oil, and petrochemical feedstock
benzene, toluene, mixed xylene, and propylene.
From the refinery, the products are delivered by barges and
marine vessels to 32 International Organization of Standardization
(ISO) certified depots and terminals situated all over the country.
Through this vast distribution network, fuel oil, diesel, and LPG are
supplied to various industrial customers. Petron also supplies jet fuel at
key airports for international and domestic carriers.

Petron Corporation also operates a polypropylene (PP) plant with


a rated capacity of 160,000 metric tons of PP resin annually. Lube oil
blending plant, which manufactures lubricants and greases. Petron also
run one of the most modern blending facilities in Asia, which enables
us to formulate the unique fuel additives we use to produce our
premium fuels.
Products are exported to Asia-Pacific countries such as Japan,
India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Pakistan, and even
to the United Arab Emirates.
To further expand its international presence, Petron recently
established Petron Oil and Gas International to run three companies in
Malaysia that comprise an integrated downstream business.
Petron also incorporate programs that address national concerns
in education, environment, and health and human services into its
operations to ensure sustainability and contribute to social
development.

2. Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation


Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation engages in the production,
import, market, sale, and distribution of retail and commercial fuel
products, lubricants, and specialty products in Philippines. The
company operates a network of retail service stations that sells
petroleum fuels and lubricants to private and commercial motorists. It
is also involved in the wholesale of commercial fuels to companies in
various industries, including power, mining, wholesale, manufacturing,
and marine. The company offers fuel, including gasoline and diesel;
lubricants comprising engine oils; transport fuels consisting of
unleaded gasoline and diesel for on-road and off-road heavy-duty
vehicles; and heavy fuel oils, such as cracked fuel oil and straight run
fuel oil for industrial heating and manufacturing boilers. In addition, it
operates Shell Select convenience stores in its gasoline stations that
offer a range of snacks, refreshments, groceries, newspapers,

magazines and hot meals. As of June 30, 2016, Pilipinas Shell


Petroleum Corporation had a nationwide network of 966 Shell Groupbranded retail service stations. Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation
operates as a subsidiary of Shell Overseas Investments B.V.
In the business of oil and gas exploration and production, Shell
Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) operates the Malampaya Deep
Water Gas-to-Power Project together with its joint venture partners.
Malampaya represents the largest and most significant industrial
investment in the history of the Philippines. It heralded the birth of the
countrys natural gas industry, enabling the supply of clean,
environment-friendly fuel and providing 2,700 megawatts of power to
Luzon for a period of 20 years. This represents roughly 40-45% of
Luzons power generation requirements, providing the country a
considerably long-term revenue stream to the government, in addition
to considerable foreign exchange savings.
Pilipinas Shell traces its roots to Asiatic Petroleum Company
(Philippine Islands), Ltd. which opened for business in the Philippines
and began to import and sell motor gasoline and kerosene in 1914.
Asiatic Petroleum Company (Philippine Islands) Ltd. was renamed The
Shell Company of the Philippine Islands, Ltd. in the 1940s.
In 1959, Pilipinas Shell was incorporated under the name The
Shell Refining Company (Philippines), Inc. in compliance with the then
required percentage of Filipino ownership (25%) in large industrial
ventures. In 1970, Pilipinas Shell was renamed Shell Philippines, Inc.
and was later renamed Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation in 1973.
In 1976, Meralco Securities Corporation acquired 25% stake in
the Company resulting in the Company being 50% owned.
In February 1987, the Filipino ownership in the Company
decreased to 33.33% after a share buyback by the Company of
Meralco Securities Corporations stake in the Company. In August 2015,
the Filipino ownership in the Company decreased to 31.82% following
the issuance of additional shares pursuant to a stock rights offering.

3. Chevron Phils.
Chevron is one of the largest investors in the Philippines, with
more than $2 billion in capital investments.
Chevron markets Caltex fuels, lubricants and other petroleum
products. Our network of service stations, terminals and sales offices
forms the backbone of our presence in the Philippines.
Chevrons geothermal operations in the Philippines help make it
one of the worlds leading producers of geothermal energy. Through
a joint venture, they operate steam fields that use heat from the
earth to provide power to plants that serve key population centers in
the country. There innovations have helped make the Philippines the
second-largest producer of geothermal energy in the world, after the
United States.

Chevron holds an interest in the Malampaya gas-to-power


project, the first natural gas development and largest industrial
project in the Philippines.
Chevron operates through five subsidiaries in the Philippines. Our
upstream companies are Chevron Malampaya LLC, Chevron
Geothermal Services Company and Chevron Kalinga Ltd. Our
downstream company is Chevron Philippines Inc. We also operate a
business processes support organization through Chevron Holdings
Inc.
Chevron Philippines operates a network of over 800 Caltex
service stations/retail outlets across the Philippines. Chevron also
provides for the fuel and lubricants needs of the commercial and
industrial sectors. Fuel products such as Caltex with Techron Gold
and Silver and Power Diesel, as well as lubricants such as Havoline
and Delo are also available at all Caltex service stations.
