DESIGN SUMMARY

Summary of Feedback & Project Goals

1.

The building should be a WELCOMING

learning environment for adults.

The new Adult Education and Transition Plus educational building for Minneapolis Public
Schools will be a welcoming learning environment for adults, provide spaces that are both flexible and specialized, and be a place that fosters and active and inclusive sense of community.
An advisory group comprised of various Minneapolis Public Schools staff, Board of Education

2.

Spaces need to be both FLEXIBLE and

SPECIALIZED.

members, parents of students, a City Council member, and members of the community formed
a collective voice in determining the site location, establishing vision and goals, and reviewing
the design. Additionally, representatives from both the Adult Education and Transition Plus
program provided detailed input and feedback for the spatial program and design submitted
for scope approval.

3.

The campus should foster an active and

inclusive sense of COMMUNITY.

Currently, Adult Education occupies 54,000 GSF in a three-story building at 2225 East Lake
Street known as the Brown Institute. Transition Plus currently occupies approximately 64,000
GSF in two levels of the Wilder School at 3320 Elliot Ave S in Minneapolis. Neither building was
designed specifically for these programs, resulting in inefficiency of space utilization and program operation. The proposed project would combine the Adult Education and Transition Plus
into one facility, creating synergy and efficiency of space by sharing areas of overlap social
zones, meeting rooms, staff work areas, and a place for teacher collaboration. A central Town
Hall is envisioned as a grand space at the heart of the building, providing a social hub and
shared meeting rooms for both MPS and the community. Classrooms and specialty areas will
be tailored to specific needs, and a proposed entry plaza provides vital outdoor space.
The team has been mindful in designing a project that will allow these programs to thrive and
be a long-term asset for Minneapolis Public Schools. This means creating a building that is not
only economically sound, but one that is environmentally responsible. The proposed building
will contain durable materials of high quality, energy efficient systems and fixtures, and implement other sustainable design strategies. The project schedule assumes a construction start
in early 2017, with final occupancy planned for the fall of 2018.
