TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

How many languages do you know? Most
Americans might say they have a primary
language, can follow the basics of another
encountered in school or in the workplace, and
maybe know the barest elements of a third. Yet
nearly everyone is fluent in languages of symbol
and ritual, languages that transcend the spoken
word and may perhaps communicate more
clearly. A dance, the delights of the table, the thrill
of sport, the power of a painting, a shared silence
on a surf-washed beach or under a desert sky, a
burst of delighted applause, all communicate
without a single word. Sacrament empowers
fluency in these languages. A little girl returning
from Mass where a baby had been baptized was
asked to summarize her day thus far. I went to
church, and some little baby became my brother.
Thats far more accurate than the adults remark,
There was a baptism at Mass today. When we
celebrate sacrament, Christ is always calling us
into deeper fluency with the languages beyond
speech. Sacraments open our senses to the
presence of God precisely so we can respond to
the depth of that love more fully.

SIMBANG GABI HISTORY

LAS POSADAS

Simbng Gabi (Filipino for "Night Mass") is a

devotional nine-day series of Masses practiced by Roman
Catholics in the Philippines in anticipation of Christmas
and to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. It starts every
December 16th and is one of the longest and most
important religious celebrations in the Philippines that has
lasted over 600 years. Its liturgical significance emanates
from the Season of Advent, being the time of spiritual
preparation and purification to worthily welcome and
receive the Child Jesus in our midst.
The Mass usually begins at four oclock in the
morning. Pope Sixtus V ordered that Mass be heard before
sunrise since it was the harvest season, and the farmers
needed to be in the fields right after the celebration. Today,
anticipated Simbng Gabi is available, especially in urban
areas. White is the liturgical color authorized solely for
Masses celebrated within the context of the novena; violet
is used for any other Masses said during the day, as these
are still considered part of the Advent season. Similar to
the Spanish tradition of lighting small oil lamps on
Christmas Eve, Filipinos adorn their homes with parl,
which are colourful star-shaped lantern. This is believed to
have originally been used by worshippers to light their way
to church in the early morning, as well as to symbolise the
Star of Bethlehem. Parls continue to be popular yuletide
decorations in the Philippines,
as iconic and emblematic as
Christmas trees are in the
West. Bands play native carols
all across town while families,
couples, and individuals make
their way to the nearest church.
A well-known folk belief
among Filipinos is that if a
devotee completed all nine
days of the Simbng Gabi, a
request made as part of the
novena may be granted.
Shortly after the Mass, Filipinos buy and eat holiday
delicacies sold in the churchyard for breakfast. Bibingka,
(rice cakes cooked above and below) and puto bumbong
(steamed purple rice pastries, seasoned with butter, grated
coconut, and brown sugar) are popular, often paired with
tsokolate (hot chocolate from local cacao) or salabt
(ginger tea).
Here in the United States, Filipino immigrants
brought with them this distinct tradition which is slowly
taking roots and thus the observance of this time honored
spiritual and cultural tradition has grown significantly in
California, New York, Chicago, New Jersey and now here
in Las Vegas and Henderson to the point where it has now
earned a strong and unequivocal support.

Las Posadas is a novenario (nine days of religious

observance) celebrated chiefly in Mexico and by
Mexican-Americans in the United States, beginning
December 16 and ending December 24, on evenings,
during which families participate in nightly Christmas
processions that re-create the Holy Pilgrimage of Mary,
Joseph and the baby Jesus on their way to Bethlehem.
The ritual has been a tradition in Mexico for 400 years.
Many Mexican holidays include dramatizations of
original events, a tradition which has its roots in the
ritual of Bible plays used to teach religious doctrine to
a largely illiterate population in Europe as early as the
10th and 11th centuries. Two people dress up as Mary
and Joseph. Certain houses are designated to be an
"inn". The head of the procession will have a candle
inside a paper lampshade. At each house, the resident
responds by singing a song and Mary and Joseph are
finally recognized and allowed to enter. Once the
"innkeepers" let them in, the group of guests come into
the home and kneel around the Nativity scene to pray
(typically, the Rosary). Latin American countries have
continued to celebrate this holiday to this day, with
very few changes to the tradition. In some places, the
final location may be a church instead of a home. The
people asking for posada travel to 1 house each night
for 8 nights Individuals may actually play the various
parts of Mary (Mara) and Joseph with the expectant
mother riding a real donkey (burro), with attendants
such as angels and shepherds acquired along the way,
or the pilgrims may carry images of the holy
personages instead. Children may carry poinsettias. The
procession will be followed by musicians, with the
entire procession singing posadas such as pedir posada.
At the end of each night's journey, there will be
Christmas carols (villancicos), children will break open
star-shaped piatas to obtain candy and fruit hidden
inside, and there will be a feast. Piatas are
traditionally made out of clay. It is expected to meet all
the invitees in a previous procession.

CANONICAL- LITURGICAL FORUM

BY FR. GEM BANDIVAS, JCL, MBA, PhD

HOW MANY TIMES A DAY MAY ONE RECEIVE COMMUNION?

Dear Father Gem: Back in the days when we were kids, we

could receive Holy Communion twice on Christmas Day, if we
attended two Masses. The same was true for Easter. Is this
practice still allowed?
Brandon, Concerned Catholic
Dear Brandon: It would have been easier for me to give you a
straightforward answer to your query had I known how old you
are. Its actually unclear which Code was in force back in the
days when we were kids. But lets presume that you are speaking
about a time before the current Code of Canon Law came into
force. In this way we can see what the Law used to say, and what
it says today.
The 1917 Code of Canon Law stipulated quite clearly that
it was not licit for anybody to receive the Eucharist for a second
time in one day (c. 857). There were, however, two exceptions.
Firstly, a person who was in danger of death could receive Holy
Communion as Viaticum (c. 858.1). In other words, when a dying
Catholic received the sacrament of Extreme Unction (often
referred to colloquially as the Last Rites), the priest also usually
gave the person Holy Communion for one last time. If the person
had attended Mass earlier that day and received the Eucharist,
and later his health took a turn for the worse or he was mortally
injured in an accident, he could thus receive the Eucharist for a
second time that day. Obviously this was an extraordinary
situation that did not happen on a regular basis.
The second exception (also referenced in the former c.
858.1) occurred when it was necessary for someone to consume
the Eucharist to avoid irreverence. If, for example, a priest who
had already celebrated Mass were later to drop a Host on the
church floor, the proper thing to do was (and still is) to pick it up
reverently and consume it himself. He could do this even though
he had already received the Eucharist at the Mass he had
celebrated earlier the same day. Again, this was not an everyday
occurrence.
The Vatican later permitted some additional exceptions to
the rule. In 1973, the Congregation for the Discipline of the
Sacraments (which was later renamed the Congregation for
Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments) issued an
instruction called Immensae caritatis, which stated that a Catholic
could receive the Eucharist for a second time in one day if (1) he
had received it first in a Mass on a Saturday morning, and then
attended a Sunday vigil Mass that same evening; (2) he had
received it at the Holy Saturday evening Masswhich in past
years used to extend beyond midnight into the early hours of
Easter Sundayand then attended another Easter Mass on
Sunday morning; (3) he had received the Eucharist at Christmas
midnight Mass, and then attended another Christmas Mass later
in the day; (4) he received it on Holy Thursday at the morning
Chrism Mass, and then attended the Mass of the Lords Supper
on Holy Thursday evening.
The instruction also admitted the possibility of other
comparable situations in which Holy Communion might be
received for a second time in the same day, if a Catholic were to
attend a second Mass. If, for example, someone were to attend a
daily morning Mass, and later that day went to a funeral or a
wedding Mass, he might receive the Eucharist licitly at both

Masses. But note that in each of

these cases, the Eucharist had to be
received during the course of a
Mass. Moreover, the two Masses
were celebrated for different
purposes. In other words, there was no provision in the document
for receiving Holy Communion a second time outside of a Mass,
nor was it permitted to receive it twice if attending, say, two
Sunday morning Masses or two daily Masses, both celebrated for
the same purpose. In fact, the Congregation specifically noted that
the faithful were not to receive the Eucharist twice in the same day
if these special circumstances were absentfor the general
restrictions found in canon 857 were still in force.
After this instruction was issued, it was thus entirely
permissible for a Catholic to receive Holy Communion twice on
Christmas and on Easter, as you noted, assuming that the first
Mass was the Christmas midnight Mass, or the Holy Saturday vigil
Mass. But with the promulgation of the 1983 Code of Canon Law,
the rule was broadened even further.
The old canon 857 of the 1917 Code was reworked and
became the current canon 917. It states that a Catholic, who
has received Holy Communion once, may receive it again on
the same day. The only restriction is that the reception must
take place within the course of a Mass in which the person is
participating. The usual exception for persons who are dying,
of course, remains in force (c. 921).
What does all this mean? As it stands today, the Law
allows us to receive Holy Communion a second time on any day,
provided that we receive it during a Mass. It does not have to be
Christmas, or Easter, or the day of a wedding or funeral.
In 1984, a question on the correct interpretation of this
canon was posed to the Pontifical Commission for the
Interpretation of Legislative Texts. The Pontifical Commission
gave the following authentic interpretation, approved by Pope
John Paul II:
Doubt: Whether, according to canon 917, one who has
already received the Most Holy Eucharist may receive it again on
the same day only a second time, or as often as one participates
in the celebration of the Eucharist.
Response: Affirmative to the first; negative to the second.
[AAS 76, (1984) 746]
This response simply means that one may receive the
Eucharist a second time in one day, if attending a second Mass,
but no more. The danger of death exception, of course, always
remains in forceso theoretically, if a Catholic received Holy
Communion at two Masses in one day, and later were to receive
the sacraments of the dying, he could receive the Eucharist yet
again. Obviously, however, this would be a highly unusual
situation.
Brandon, I hope that this clarifies your query. Not only is it
permissible to receive Holy Communion twice at two different
Masses on Christmas Day or Easter, it is actually allowed now on
every day of the year.
