program.

Scholarships

Withthankstoourverygenerousalumniandindustryfriends,MPGEisabletoofferawiderangeofscholarshipsto
supportthosestudentswhodemonstrateacademicexcellencewithinourprogram.Duringthe201314schoolyear,
MPGEawardedover$800,000inscholarships.
OU'sCentralizedAcademicScholarshipHubcoversallofMPGE'sscholarships.Applicationsbecomeavailableon
October1ofeachacademicyear.ScholarshipapplicationsaredueonFebruary1andarenotconsidered
completeuntilalltherequestedmaterialshavebeensubmitted.
MewbourneLeadershipScholarsProgram
HighschoolseniorsplanningotmajorpetroleumengineeringatOUmayapplyfortheverydistinguishedMewbourne
LeadershipScholarsProgram.Recipientswillreceiveanannual,renewablescholarshipfor$4,000ayearforupto
fouryears,whichwillincreaseby$1,000eachyearrecognitionasaMewbourneSchoolofPetroleumand
GeologicalEngineeringScholarandregularinteractionwithindustryleaders,otherMewbourneScholars,and
professionalengineersengagedinvariousaspectsoftheenergyindustry.

GraduateAssistantships
MPGEoffersalimitednumberofteachingassistantships,andindividualfacultymembersofferalimitednumberof
researchassistantships.Pleasenotethatavailabilityvariesfromsemestertosemester.
Studentssupportedhalftimethroughacombinationofteachingand/orresearchassistantshipswillreceiveafull
tuitionwaiver(feesnotincluded).
WhoisEligible?
AllM.S.thesisandPh.D.applicantsareeligibleforassistantships.Ifanassistantshipisavailableforastudent'sfirst
year,informationabouttheassistantshipwillbeincludedwiththeacceptanceletter.
NOTE:StudentspursuingtheM.S.nonthesisoptionarenoteligibleforteachingorresearchassistantships.
SPECIALNOTE:Internationalstudentswhoindicateaneconomicneedforassistancewillonlybeadmittedif

Whatisexpectedofagraduateassistant?

Recipientsofassistantshipsareexpectedtofulfilltheirrolesasstudents(meetingallacademicrequirements)and
assistants(carryingouttheteachingand/orresearchobligations)successfully.Universitypoliciesforgraduate
assistantsareprovidedintheGraduateCollege'sGraduateAssistantHandbook.
WhatifIreceiveanappointment?
Ifyouareappointedasagraduateassistant(MPGEsupportedteachingorgrantsponsoredresearch),youshould
begintofamiliarizeyourselfwiththeNewEmployeePersonalDataFormandtheGraduateAssistantHandbook.You
willthenscheduleanappointmentwithMPGEsFinancialOfficertogoovertheappropriatepaperworkandreceive
furtherinstruction.
GraduateTeachingAssistantship
AGraduateTeachingAssistant(GTA)isagraduateMaster'sstudentonstipendwhoseprimaryresponsibilities
supporttheinstructionalmissionoftheuniversity.Servicesprovidedbyateachingassistantmayincludebutarenot
limitedto:classroomorlaboratoryteaching,counselingstudents,proctoringexaminations,gradingpapersor
providingothergeneralassistanceintheinstructionalprocess.
EnrollmentRequirements
Astudentmustbeenrolledinaminimumof5credithourstoholdaGTApositionduringthefallorspring
semester.Astudentmayholdnomorethana.50FTEappointmentwithoutthepriorapprovalofGraduate
College
MPGEGTAappointmentsaretypicallymadeforonesemester,andstudentsmustreapplyfortheposition
eachsemester.
BeforeapplyingforaGraduateTeachingPosition,becertaintounderstandtheguidelinesandexpectationsasfound
intheGraduateAssistantHandbook.
SelectionofGTA'sbyMPGE
GTAselectionisacompetitiveprocessthatcomprisesofreviewingmaterialssuchasacademiccredentials,prior
workexperience,instructorandstudentfeedbackandEnglishlanguageskills.Applicantsmusthave:
Atminimum,a3.2GPA
Madesatisfactoryacademicprogresstowardstheirdegreeobjective
CompletedtheEnglishAssessmentTest(SPEAKTest)ifEnglishisnottheapplicantsfirstlanguage.
Schedulingandfurtherinformationaboutthetestcanbefoundinthelinkprovided.Thecostofthistestis
$50,however,aftercompletingtheexam,theproofofpaymentmaybetakentoMPGEsAccountandBudget
Coordinatorforreimbursement.

GraduateCollegeRequirements
TheCenterforTeachingExcellencesponsorsaworkshopforallteachingassistantseachfallduringtheweekpriorto
thestartofclasses.TheSeniorVicePresidentandProvostandtheDeansCouncilhavemandatedthisworkshopfor
allteachingassistantswhoarenewtoteachingatOU.Inaddition,thereisamandatorytrainingprogramfornew
internationalteachingassistantsheldtwoweeksbeforefallclassesbegin.Formoreinformation,contacttheCenter

AcceptanceasaGTA

IfofferedapositionasaQualifiedGraduateAssistant(QGA)inMPGE,studentsareallowedamaximumoffour
semestersofGTAfunding.PerformanceasaGTAwillbeevaluatedattheendofeachsemester,andfuture
appointmentswillbecontingentuponthisreviewandavailablefunding.
GTAsarerequiredtobeoncampusbythefirstdayofclassorearlierifrequiredtoattendtheteachingworkshop(s).
AnyGTAwhofailstoreturnpriortothestartofclassandcannotprovidedocumentationtosupporttheabsence
and/oritsapprovalforfeitstheposition.
QGAsreceiveafulltuitionwaiverthatcoversuptothenumberofhoursrequiredfortheirdegree.Tuitionwaiversdo
notcoverfees,andstudentsareresponsibleforensuringthattheseandanyothercostsarepaid.Failuretopay

AGraduateResearchAssistantisagraduatestudentonstipendwhoseresponsibilitiesareotherthanteaching.
GraduateResearchAssistantsdonotinstructstudents.Servicesprovidedbyresearchassistantsmayinclude
assistingfacultymembersinaresearchorcreativeactivity,servingasanadministrativeassistantorintern,
developingandevaluatinginstructionalmaterialsorcurriculaorassumingresponsibilityforadesignatedresearch
area.
Researchassistantsappointedinrelationtoresearchorcreativeactivitieswithexternalfundingmayassistfaculty
membersinthecompletionofcontractedresearchandcreativeactivitiestheymaybeassignedresponsibilityforthe
independentcompletionofparts
orallofspecificcontractstheymayberesponsibleforpreparationofrequiredreportsandproposalsand/orthey
mayberesponsibleforthesupervisionofotherresearchpersonnel.
