Dear Elizabeth Benedict,
At the beginning of the semester we were introduced to five core objectives. These objectives were meant to give us specific areas of focus to explore and perfect throughout the course and in each individual major writing assignment. The objectives were to be proficient in analyzing rhetorical situations, finding and evaluating information, composing documents, presenting documents, and composing in various modes. We were either given a rhetorical situation or prompted to create one for each individual assignment. These rhetorical situations tended to be centered around local or University of New Mexico problems or conditions. The assignments that required the most attention to rhetorical situation were the proposal and the recommendation letter. Both assignments required a specific subject, purpose, audience and genre. Tending to a rhetorical situation taught me how to better relate to a specific audience and create a piece of writing best equipped for that genre. This objective also taught me how to come up with a rhetorical situation myself and fully execute a paper aimed at that genre. Being proficient in research is one of the most important and useful skills to obtain. The objective of finding and evaluating information allowed me to discover valid sources for multiple
assignments. Both my proposal and my recommendation report
required a great amount of qualified research. Without efficient sources, both documents would be invalid. The exploration of this objective lead me to discover different ways of scholarly research for future reference. This objective will not only come in handy academically but for my future career as well. Psychology has a high demand for professional, academic, and government sources and these learned research techniques will surely come in handy. It is obvious that each assignment required both composition and presentation of some sort. Though this is standard, none of them were composed or presented in the same way. MWA 1 was presented in the form of an electronic/online portfolio, MWA 2 was presented as a document, and MWA 3 was presented as a visual/PowerPoint presentation accompanied by an auditory component. Each of these taught me how to exhibit my writing in a unique way. This objective has encouraged me to make my writing more valuable, interesting, and notable to its consumers as well as how to work incorporate different technologies and mediums to do so. The last objective related directly to the presentation of each document which I discussed above. It also focused on each type of writing that we were challenged with. Rather than accomplishing each objective by creating an essay for each one we incorporated a more creative approach. By composing a portfolio, proposal, and a recommendation report we could explore different modes of writing and observe their effects. This objective prepared me for the array of professional documents I am bound to encounter in the future of my education and professional career. Ultimately, each one of these objectives contributed to an overall better understanding of not only writing as a whole but my personal writing process, style, and approach as well. Having this experience under my belt will help me to apply for jobs, compose proposals and recommendation letters, and present my ideas in an interesting, proactive way.
