o Simon Denyer is the Washington Posts Bureau Chief in China and is a graduate
of Trinity College in Cambridge. In his artile Chinas Scary Lesson to the World:
Censoring the Internet Works he discusses how the effectiveness of the firewall
that has blocked certain information from being allowed into china for nearly two
decades. He compares this wall to other, physical walls, such as the Berlin walls,

stating that all walls fall at some point in time.

o Nathaniel Mott is a Freelance Journalist out of New York who has worked at
several publishing and media firms including Gigaom, PandoDaily, and
AppStorm. In his Article that was published in Gigaom, Apple News censorship
reminds us how fleeting digital content is. He Discusses how governments can
influence companies to censor their content in that country. This article argues the
idea that digital content can disappear as quickly as it appears. Additionally, it
argues that Apple is being influenced by the Chinese government to not have the

app display stories that were previously downloaded.

China. During this time, US companies will try and be friendly with their Chinese

have an author that is listed, it is published under name Anonymous in the
News Letter on Intellectual Freedom. The American Library Association holds the
Copyright. Within this article the withdrawal of Google from China is discussed.
The articles aim is to inform people of the censorship laws that corporations,
such as Google, must face put in place by the Chinese government. The article
argues the legal, moral and business factors that went into the decision to shut
down Google China while additionally discussing the events leading up to the

shut down.

Rhetorical Analysis
o Paul Mozur is an Asia Tech Correspondent for the New York Times and attended
Dartmouth College. In his article: Seeking Access to Facebook in China,
Zuckerberg Courts Risks he describes how Zuckerberg is attempting a smooth,
friendly approach when it comes to government officials; courting them. He
has been meeting with and kissing up to them. Paul Mozur argues that his
approach could open the doors for Facebook to enter the Chinese internet market.
This is a unique technique, which other executives have not attempted. More
traditional approaches, like that of LinkedIns executive have not had as great

success.

o This documentary, produced by the Australian Broadcasting Company, argues that
the Australian Embassys workers were a key asset in distributing the images and
news to the world, which would showcase the current events of the protests.
Without these men and woman, the news of this tragedy would have remained in
China and censored to the outside world. The Embassy staff had to smuggle these
images, such as those of the tanks running over people, using video tapes in
clothes as satellite and broadcast was blocked by the government; as censorship.
The Australian staff were putting themselves in danger by spreading this
information which was later shown when, bullets were found in many of their

apartments (after they were evacuated).

writer, although he previously worked for USA Today and graduated from Indiana
University, Bloomington. In his article Cracking the Great Firewall of Chinas
Web Censorship, which was published by USA Today, he describes how China
sensors online information from their citizens. He describes the differences
between China, who encourage internet use (filtered) and countries that ban the

internet altogether.

In his article, he discusses a bill that was written that would give the US money to
start an office focused on combating internet censorship around the globe. This
bill appeared to be mainly focused on China, however, other countries were
mentioned as well. He also begins to go into depth about the complicated

Algorithms China uses to filter out content.
