3.2.1 St atu s and Info r mation
On this screen, you c an s ee the general information of the
Access Point i ncludi ng Alias Name, Firmware Version, ESSID,
Channel Number, Status, IP Address, MAC Address, etc.
3.2. 2 W ir eless S et t in g
This Access Point supports AP, Station, Bridge and WDS
modes. “AP Mode” provi des pure access point func tion. The
simplest way to build up a wireless LAN is to us e “AP Mode”.
“Station Mode” provides the function to connec t to other AP
without bridge functi on. “AP Bridge M ode” provides the
functi on to bridge more than 2 wired Ethernet networks
together by wireless LAN. You can us e two acc ess points with
“AP Bridge-Point to Poi nt mode” to bridge two wired Ethernet
networ ks together. If you want to bridge mor e than two wired
Ether net networks together, you have to use enough access
points with “AP Bridge-Point to Multi-Point mode”. An
10

access point with “AP Bridge-Point to Point mode” or “AP
Bridge-Point to Multi-Poi nt mode” can onl y be used to bridge
wired Ethernet networ ks together. It can’t acc ept c onnecti on
from other wirel ess station at the same time. If you want an
access point to bridge wired Ethernet networ k and provide
connection ser vice for other wireless stati on at the same time,
you have to set the acc ess point to “AP Bridge-WDS mode”.
Simpl y s peaking, “AP Bridge-WDS mode” function is the
combinati on of “AP mode” and “AP Bridge-Poi nt to Multi-Poi nt
mode”.

3.2. 4 Secu r it y
This Access Point provi des c omplete wireless LAN sec urity
functi ons, i nclude WEP, IEEE 802.11x, IEEE 802.11x with
WEP, WPA with pre-shared key and WPA with RADIUS. With
thes e sec urity functions, you c an prevent your wireless LAN
from illegal acc ess. Pleas e make sure your wireless s tati ons
use the s ame s ecurity functi on.
W EP
WEP is an authentication algorithm, which protects authorized
Wireless LAN us ers against eavesdropping. T he
Authentication type and WEP key of wireless stations must be
the s ame with the Acc ess Point. This Acc ess Point s upports
64/128- bit WEP Encr ypti on func tion. With this function, your
data will be tr ans mitted over the wireless network secur ely.
21

select Disable to trans mit data without
encr yption.
You may selec t to selec t ASCII Characters
(alphanumeric format) or Hexadeci mal Digits
Key (in the “A-F”, “a-f” and “0-9” range) to be the
Format WEP Key. For example:
ASCII Characters: guest
Hexadecimal Digits: 12345abcde

W PA pre-shared key
Wi-Fi Protected Access ( WPA) is an advanced s ecurity
standard. You can use a pr e-shared key to authenticate
wireless stations and encr ypt data during communicati on. It
uses TKIP to change the encryption key frequentl y. T his can
improve sec urity ver y much.
Parameter Description
TKIP can c hange the encryption key

Troubleshooting
C h apt er 4 T ro ub lesh oot in g
This chapter provides solutions to probl ems usually
encountered during the i nstallation and oper ation of the
Access Point.
3. What is ESSID?
An Infrastruc ture c onfigurati on c oul d also support
roaming c apability for mobile wor kers. M ore than one
BSS c an be c onfigured as an Extended Servic e Set
(ESS). Users within an ESS could roam freel y between
BSSs while maintaining a c ontinuous c onnecti on to the
wireless networ k s tations and the Wireless LAN Acc ess
Points.
5. What is W EP?
WEP s tands for Wired Equi val ent Privac y, a data
privac y mechanism based on a 64(40)-bit shared key
algorithm.
6. What is a M AC Address?
The Media Acc ess Control (MAC) address is a unique
number assigned by the manufac turer to any Ether net
networ king device, s uch as a networ k adapter, that
allows the networ k to identify it at the hardware level.
For all practical purposes , this number is us uall y
permanent. Unlike IP address es, whic h can c hange
ever y time a computer l ogs on to the networ k, the MAC
address of a device stays the same, making it a
val uable identifi er for the network.
