Inductive Teaching Lesson 1 Who Am I?

Background and Logic

As human beings we know very little about how to use our conscious brains
effectively we generally take it for granted. The idea behind the lesson is to
engage students into brainstorming on how to use their own brain effectively; or
rather how to engage the brain into thinking, essentially through repeated
questioning.
The clustered idea cards, created by the students working in pairs, would present a
model for thinking, i.e., something like:
Observe Question Guess Answer Check Answer Repeat Q/A till successful
The students will then apply this model to answering the questions, Who am I?,
What will make me happy?, What skills do I want to see in myself? and What
obstacles may stand in my way? in the form of a mind map.
They students will then compare their own mind map drawn up in groups with that
given in the lesson. Individually, the students will attempt a similar mind map for
themselves, upload & explain their mind map in a forum or social media as well as
comment on other mind maps and respond to comments on their own mind maps.

Expected Skills by the end of Lesson

1. A realization that they are able to think by themselves

2. Have a self-developed model for thinking
3. Be able to create a mind map while answering self-searching questions on
themselves.
4. Deepen their understanding by commenting on other mind maps and
responding to comments on their own.

Description of Powerpoint and Method of Delivery

The powerpoint, that can be downloaded and used as a guide in class consists of a
series of questions and activities that follow a modified inductive teaching
methodology. The teacher should invite a response to each question, which are laid
out in a sequential logical manner. Once at least two students have proposed an
answer, the teacher can support or offer alternative answers. The questions are not
meant to be immediately conclusive. These are to engage the students and guide
them towards maturing their thoughts. So no answer by a student is wrong. In
fact, as the title cards are put up, the teacher should ask whether any idea is
wrong? It will be noticed that every idea has a place. It is just that each person
thinks from a different angle or has an individual concern.
The job of the teacher is to engage the student in each question, by getting to ask
relevant questions, offering alternatives and posing questions again. The total
lesson is designed to last between 2.5 to 3 hours. The students should be given
adequate time for the tasks. If the lesson is to be covered in two classes, then break
at a convenient point, like having demonstrated the model and summarized the
learning about the model. The next session can begin with reviewing the model,
where the teacher can also use a mind map to summarize.

Assignment Lesson 1
After class, the student should attempt to draw a personal mind map with Me or
name in the center. The assignment activity contributes to 40% of the final mark.

Use a poster to draw your own personal Me diagram

Add the four question branches, Who am I?; What would make me
Happy?; What skills do I want to see in myself and How would I
develop these skills?; and What might prevent me from achieving
the happiness that I want/deserve, i.e., Obstacles that may prevent
me achieving happiness?
Take a picture, upload and explain your four and any additional
branches you wish to add on Facebook. Add any references you find.
For references you may want to Google the following types of
questions
How to use the brain efficiently
How to mind map
How to be successful
Comment on any diagram of your friends and respond to comments
on your own mind map.
