could

we

nowadays?

You are right and sad to say, many

cases of injustices were just thrown
and were not considered. Lets just give
these things to the hands of God.
2. Development of the Lesson
a. Pre-Reading

God Sees the Truth but Waits,

maam by Leo Tolstoy. We really
love it.

Today class, we will discuss a short

story

about

how

justice

takes

its

course and how the character fights for

it. Have you read the short story that I
assigned to you? What was that again?

Yes, maam!

If thats the case then lets not prolong

the agony. Before we discuss, I believe
you,

too,

on your chair, by group, we will do it

on the board. Please pick one loom

band here to determine your group and
afterwards, find your group mates. Red
looms will stay here, etc.

Are you done?

(A student will answer the first

word.)

Yes, maam.

Now, may I have a representative from Answers:

The students congregated to the

about the tuition hike.
It was fun riding on a troika. The
horse is very energetic.
(Other students are expected to
give their sentences.)
May we read the words. Follow after
me.

Yes, maam.

Now, may I have someone to use the

first word in his/her own sentence.

Did you enjoy our activity?

your

recitation. The other groups will have

take down the important details
about the author.)

Reading Proper (Discussion)

What was again our short story for

today?

Yes, maam!
Very good! So, lets get to know the
man

behind

this

very

influential

masterpiece.

power point presentation about Leo
Tolstoy, the author of the short story,
God Sees the Truth but Waits.)

(The students will have the comic

so let us go through the story. I expect Yes, maam,

that you all have read the story so
theres

no excuse

for you

not

to

participate in the interaction. Am I

right?

In Vladimir, maam.

For our discussion, we have here some Its Ivan

comic strips. You will work with the maam.

Dmitrich

Aksionov,

same group a while ago and you will

discuss among yourselves the part
where this comic strip belongs and
retell it. One representative will read
their answer later on. And I will be
giving you follow up questions about
the comic strip and you will answer it
in groups. Do it in five minutes.

We got the comic strip with Ivan

and

his

wife

time, Ivan leaves his family for a

business trip. Her wife stopped

him to go because she had a bad

dream about Ivan.

Okay, so lets start. Anyway, where was

the story took place?

His wife dreamt that Ivan when

he returned to town, his hair
turned grey.

And who was the main character of the

story?

No, maam. He just laughed about

it.

Okay, so lets begin with the setting.

The story happened in the town of

to continue his travel.

Not really, maam. They only slept

in the same inn and before dawn,

What was this bad dream?

Ivan arose, bought samovar and

paid his bills.

The next comic strip is titled

Was this a bad thing for Ivan?

#UnprovenInnocence. It is when
an official alighted from a troika
(a

carriage)

with

two

other

soldiers in front of Ivan.

Very good! So Ivan bade goodbye to his
family then while on his way . . . may I
have the next comic strip.

The

official

asked

Ivan

some

harsh questions and Ivan felt that

he was cross-questioning him and
they only do this to robbers or
killers.
Is there any unexpected or significant
event that happened on this part of the
story?

Its because the merchant whom

he spent the night with was found
dead and he is the only person
who was with him before his
death.

Can we have the third comic strip?

Our

comic

strip

is

about

#CELLofDESPAIR. In here, Ivan

was not on his senses so he was
imprisoned.
What did the official and the two
soldiers do to Aksionov?

Yes, maam because thats the

start of a greater toil of Ivan as a
prisoner who was not able to
prove his innocence.

Why do you think did the policemen

asked those rude questions to Ivan?

That was twenty-six long and

difficult years, maam.

No, maam. He became a model to

his fellow prisoners. He seldom

time. But he never loses hope and
he always prays to God.

Did that thing made a great impact in

the life of Ivan?
Yes, maam. But that was the
time when he met that man.

Very good! How many years did Ivan

spend his life in prison?

(A representative will post the

comic strip on the board and
explain further.)

In the prison, did Ivan become a

madman, a worse person?

We

call

our

comic

strip

as

#LONGTIMENOSEE. In here, Ivan

met Makar who was really the one
who killed the merchant with
whom Ivan spent a night at the
same inn.

What is all about your comic strip?

Yes, maam. He was very angry
but that anger could not bring
him peace so he just prayed for it.

How did Ivan recognize him?

Yes, maam. That was the time

when Ivan saw Makar one night
while he was digging a tunnel

escape.

Makar threatened Ivan but he

was not moved.
Lets go back to the revenge thing. Was
there a time when Ivan felt the need to
take revenge to Makar?

When the police found out that

someone tried to escape, they
asked all the prisoners but no one
wants to talk. They finally asked
Ivan but he said that its not

Were there unexpected circumstances One night, Makar took the pride

he was really the one who killed

forgiveness and promised Ivan

that he will tell the truth for

Yes, maam.

Was that talk has to do with the (A representative will post the last

titled as #JusticePrevails. This
has to do with the reconciliation
or at least clarification between
Ivan and Makar about the murder

years ago.

So, from this revelation, I guess, there Ivan said, God will forgive you.

Yes, maam but when the order
for his release came, Aksionov
was already dead.

Did Ivan forgive him?

He did not waste his time inside
the prison. He became a better
man though he was sad and in
despair for a long time.
So, did Aksionov receive the justice he
longed for so long?
Yes, maam.
That

was

happened to him?

Ive learned that the truth will

prevail in Gods time.

God sees the truth but he waits

Very good, class. I believe that you
really understood the short story. Did
you like the story?

How about Aksionov?

for the right time, maam.

What did you learn from the story?

Very good! Who else wants to share?

Oh, youre very witty, huh? Very good!

c.

Post-Reading/Literary Focus

In the story, weve seen how the

sequence of events happened and this
sequence of events is called as the plot.
It is planned and arranged logically by
the author. In the plot we have five
important

phases:

introduction

or

exposition which is the beginning of

the

story

where

the

setting

and

characters are revealed; rising action

where the conflict is exposed; climax is
the turning point or highest point of
interest; falling action is where the
events

and

complications

begin

(A student will put the comic

strips on the Freytags Pyramid.)

to

resolve themselves; and the resolution

which gives the end or outcome of the
story. I have here a diagram of Gustav
Freytags dramatic structure. Freytag
is famous for the analysis of the
structure

of

ancient

Greek

and (Students will write their answers

diagram to sum up the totality of the

story. But before that, lets look at the

comic strips that we used a while ago.
Which

do

you

think

is

the

introduction? Rising action? Climax?

Falling action? Resolution? May I have
someone to pin the comic strips on the
Freytags Pyramid.

C. Evaluation
Very good! So, for your last activity, you
summarize each of the parts of the plot
using

the

Freytags

Pyramid

with

three-five sentences in this worksheet.

Do it in 10 minutes.

IV.

ASSIGNMENT
Read the poem titled, Sonnet 29 by William Shakespeare. Be able to
define what a sonnet is and its structure.
