NO. OF SESSIONS: 2
DATE/TIME:
December 16 & 19, 2016 / 10:00am 11:00am
TOPIC:
Rules of Differentiation
COMPETENCY: (STEM_BC11D-IIIf-2) The learner derives the differentiation rules.
OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:

1. appreciate how patterns become helpful in deriving formulas;
2. derive the basic rules of differentiation using limits; and
3. use the derived rules of differentiation in finding derivatives.

Activity
THE POWER OF PATTERN

15 minutes

Let f(x) = 8, g(x) = 7x, h(x) = 6x2, m(x) = 5x3 and n(x) = 4x4
Find f(x), g(x), h(x), m(x) and n(x).

5 minutes

Use Pascals Triangle to get the coefficients of the expanded forms.

Analysis
1. What is f(x)? Is the derivative always 0 when the function is a
constant function?
2. What do you notice about the derivatives of g, h, m, and n? Do
you see a pattern?
3. What can you conclude about the derivative of a Power Function

xn?
Abstraction
The Constant Rule of Differentiation
If c is a constant and if f(x) = c for all x, then f(x) = 0.
The Power Rule (for Positive Integer Powers) of
Differentiation
If n is a positive integer and if f(x) = xn, then f(x) = nxn-1.
The Constant Multiple Rule of Differentiation
If f is a function, c is a constant, and g is the function defined by g(x)
= cf(x), then if f(x) exists, g(x) = cf(x).
The Sum Rule of Differentiation
If f and g are functions and if h is the function defined by h(x) = f(x) +

meeting)

g(x), then if f(x) and g(x) exist, h(x) = f(x) + g(x).

The Product Rule of Differentiation
If f and g are functions and if h is the function defined by h(x) =
f(x)g(x), then if f(x0 and g(x) exist, h(x) = f(x)g(x) + g(x)f(x).
The Quotient Rule of Differentiation
If f and g are functions and if h is the function defined by h(x) =
f (x)
g ( x ) , where g(x) 0, then if f(x) and g(x) exist, h(x) =
g ( x ) f ' ( x )f (x ) g '( x )

[g ( x)]

The Power Rule (for Negative Integer Powers) of

Differentiation
If f(x) = x-n where n is a negative integer and x 0, then f(x) = -nx-n.

Show how each rule is derived and let students answer sample problems
20 minutes

for each rule.

Application
We can apply combination of different rules to find derivatives
of certain functions.

Find: Dx

x 2+ 1 ( 2
x 2 x1 +1 )
2
x +2

Find the equation of the tangent line and the equation of the
10
normal line in the curve y= 14x 2 at the point (4, -5).
Evaluation

15 minutes

1. Find

d x 38
dx x 3 +8

( )

2. Find the equation of the tangent line to the curve y = x3 4 at

the point (2, 4).
CLOSURE
Truth shall prevail but only if we make
a firm stand against those who have no
respect for it.
