Practical Examination
1.
If all of the simulated porosity (drilled holes only, each hole assumed to be 3/64
inch in diameter) included in segment 2 of the simulated fillet weld specimen F1
was spread out and randomly distributed in a 12 inch length of this weld (no
additional porosity present), the weld would be:
(A) unacceptable because the sum of the porosity exceeds the acceptable
porosity allowed per inch.
(B) unacceptable because of the porosity.
(C) acceptable with the porosity so described.
(D) acceptable because the individual pores are too small to consider, when it
is randomly distributed.
(E) unacceptable because the porosity is linear.
2.
If all of the simulated porosity (drilled holes only, each hole assumed to be 3/64
inch in diameter) included in segment 2 of the simulated fillet weld specimen F1
was clustered in less than 1/2 inch of this weld (no additional porosity present),
the weld would be:
(A) acceptable because the individual pores are too small to consider.
(B) unacceptable because of the porosity.
(C) unacceptable because the sum of porosity exceeds the acceptable porosity
allowed per inch.
(D) acceptable with the porosity so described.
(E) unacceptable because the porosity is linear.
3.
If all of the simulated porosity (drilled holes only) included in segments 1 (1/16
inch and 1/32 inch holes), 3 (1/32 inch diameter holes), and 4 (1/16 inch
diameter holes) of simulated fillet weld specimen F1 were spread out and
randomly distributed in a 12 inch length of this weld(no additional porosity

considered.
(D) acceptable because the porosity of segment 3 is too small to be
considered.

6.
If the entire simulated fillet weld specimen F1 was specified to have a 3/8 inch
size and was welded transverse to the primary stress of the member (ignore all
porosity), the weld would be:
(A) acceptable because it has at least 3/8 inch fillet weld for the complete
length.
(B) unacceptable because the undercut exceeds 0.010 inch; (Note 1/64 inch =
0.016 inch).
(C) unacceptable because the porosity exceeds the allowable.
(D) acceptable because the undercut does not exceed 1/32 inch.

7.
If the simulated fillet weld on specimen F1 was welded on ASTM A517 base
metal, the weld:
(A) shall be visually inspected immediately after the weld is completed.
(B) shall be visually inspected immediately after the completed weld has
cooled to the ambient temperature.

the weld.
(D) shall have final visual inspection not less than 24 hours after the
completion of the weld and the weld is cooled to ambient.
