Course Descriptions
PG 758 Clinically Applied Dental Materials
This course is designed to explore new restorative materials and alternate sometimes controversial
restorative dentistry techniques. Through a series of lectures in multiple topics, students will become
aware of successful predictable materials and restorative techniques. This update will bridge the gap from
materials used in the dental school environment by providing current evaluations of single bottle universal
adhesives, amalgam longevity, current preventive materials, anterior composite resin layering techniques,
bulk placement and restoration of posterior composite resin restorations, fluoride releasing materials,
cements, ceramics, digital and conventional impression materials, provisional restorations and restoring
endodontically treated teeth. Students will understand the composition, properties, and optimal
manipulation of dental materials used in the fabrication of direct and indirect restorations.
PG 760 Journal Club
This is a bi-weekly journal club with rotating presentations from first and second year biomaterials
residents. Two articles will be assigned to each graduate student based on their interests by the assigned
mentor. Each graduate student will be assigned a time to present the article using a PowerPoint
presentation. Interaction of the graduate students with each other and the presenter is expected at each
session. Faculty from all departments of the dental school are invited to attend the journal club and
generally participation of certain departments is dependent on the topic of the articles.
PG 797 Advanced Restorative Techniques
This laboratory course will refine the residents ability to cut cavity preparations for direct and indirect
restorations as well as complete final restorations using a variety of materials. The resident will prepare
dentoform teeth on a typodont for faculty evaluation, then progress to exercises on the manikin and
ultimately in patients. Emphasis will be placed on developing skills which could be used in clinical trials
to evaluate the performance of different dental materials.
MSE 280 Engineering Materials

Fundamentals of materials engineering, including terminology, mechanical testing and behavior, heat
treating, and processing of metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. Degradation of materials and
criteria for materials selection.
PG 525/ CD 625 Design and Analysis in Clinical Dental Research
This course provides an overview of basic concepts in statistical methods and study design, as applicable
to clinical research. The goals of the course are (1) to gain familiarity with issues of study design and
statistical analysis that must be considered in the conduct of clinical dental research, (2) to develop an
understanding of the relationship between study design and statistical analysis methods, (3) to gain an
understanding of the underlying models and assumptions that are necessary to the selection of appropriate
statistical methods, and (4) to apply this knowledge to critical evaluation of the information presented in
published research reports. Whenever possible, examples from clinical dental research will be used in
order to facilitate understanding the purpose and usefulness of research methods as tools in dental
research. Evaluation of study designs and statistical methods in published dental research articles is a
focus of the course. Topics presented in the course will be applied to critical reviews of published articles.
PG 727,CD 626 Surgical Implants in Dentistry
This is a lecture based course addressing the materials-based, restorative and surgical components of
dental materials. Lectures will be given by engineers who developed implants, prosthodontists that
restore implants, and oral surgeons and periodontists that place implants. The goals of the course are to
apply critical thinking in diagnosis and treatment planning for implant therapies for fixed and removable
prosthodontics and to consider topics dental implantology by exploration of the basic sciences and
current scientific understanding.
