COMPARATIVE STRENGTHS OF INDUCTION LIGHTING

As the cost of energy continues to rise, lighting innovations providing greater efficiencies
are being developed. Induction Fluorescent lighting was pioneered by Nikola Tesla in the
late 1800s and has undergone significant technological advancements to become a viable (and often preferable) contemporary alternative to traditional HID lighting systems.
Induction lightings cost of ownership has also decreased over time, clearing the path
for its adoption in many everyday applications such as tunnels, bridges, street lights,
and numerous public locations that are difficult and inconvenient to access and whose
service interruptions are extremely costly.
Induction is not the only modern
alternative to traditional HID lighting;
LED is another choice. Both Induction and LED provide significant
advantages over HID: each offer
substantial energy savings, higher
luminance levels over a longer period of time, instant strike and
re-strike capabilities, higher CRI,
and a much longer system life.
Traditionally, high pressure
sodium (HPS) lamps are used in
most outdoor HID luminaires, providing high system efficacies but very
poor color rendering. Additionally, HID
requires a few minutes to achieve
full brightness and up to 15 minutes
to re-strike after a power outage. In
stark contrast to Induction and LED,
HID systems provide much shorter
system life while also experiencing
rapid lumen depreciation.
Recently, LED has attained a real foothold in down, track, sign, and display lighting applications replacing halogen, neon, and fluorescent technologies. LED lighting remains relatively expensive,
translating into a longer payback period or ROI. As a technology that continues to evolve, LED does
not perform well in applications with high ambient temperatures. Other lighting alternatives must be
considered in these types of environments; Induction is a prime candidate here.

1
How does Induction work, and why do Induction lamps and luminaires
last so long?
Conventional gas discharge lamps rely on an electrode (the filament) for
ignition and operation. The electrode is similar to a spark plug in a car, that
will eventually fail to produce an effective spark in the combustion chamber.
By contrast, Induction is a hybrid fluorescent technology that operates
without the use of electrodes. Instead, an electrical current is used to create
an electromagnetic field and invisible UV radiation within an Induction lamp.
This energy is then converted to visible light by the phosphor that coats the
glass inside the lamp.
By eliminating the electrode, and by using high efficiency electronic power
management, the life of the induction lamp is lengthened dramatically rated
at 100,000 hours.

How does induction lighting compare to HPS and metal halide?

Induction provides higher quality light while using up to 50% less energy than
HPS and metal halide. Superior lumen maintenance contributes to a rated
life five times longer, with little or no color shift or degradation.
Additionally, Induction has a broader operating temperature range and instant
strike and re-strike capabilities.
How does induction lighting compare to the latest LED systems?

Both Induction and LED provide energy savings and higher light quality when
compared with HID. However, Induction has proven to be better equipped
for the demands of high ambient temperature applications, and does not
produce the glare that is typical of LED fixtures The initial cost of Induction
is also most often less than LED, leading to a faster return on investment
(ROI). The components of Induction luminaires are easier to replace than
LED at this time, based on most approaches to modern LED fixture design
(and based on LED technology changing so much that exact replacement
parts are not likely to be as available too far down the road).

Fulham HighHorse Induction System and Induction Luminaire Limited Warranty

This warranty certies that the Fulham HighHorse Induction Lighting System, comprised of an induction
lamp and a generator, (the FHIL System) and the Fulham Induction Luminaire, comprised of all parts
other than the FHIL System supplied by Fulham, (the FI Luminaire) shall be free from defects in material
and workmanship and shall operate from the date of installation (or date of manufacture if installation date
is either unknown or unavailable) for a period of up to 60 months for the FHIL System and 24 months for
the FI Luminaire and subject to the Terms and Conditions specied below. This Warranty Period allows
up to 8760 hours per year of continuous operation, with a 3 hour per start minimum.
System Components Replacement within Warranty Period
If a FHIL System or FI Luminaire fails during the relevant warranty period, and provided that such FHIL
System and FI Luminaire was installed and operated as indicated in the Terms and Conditions specied
below, Fulham will provide free replacement parts for the FHIL System and/or FI Luminaire, as the case
may be.
Return of Defective Product
After contacting Fulham and receiving a Return Authorization Number, the user shall promptly return the
product at the users expense to Fulham. Failure to follow this procedure shall render this warranty null
and void.
Labor Allowance within Warranty Period
If a FHIL System or FI Luminaire fails within the relevant warranty period for each item and was installed
and operated as indicated in the Terms and Conditions specied below, a reasonable labor allowance
may be available under the conditions stated below, and at the sole discretion of Fulham.
Labor Allowance Conditions within Warranty Period
All requests for labor must be submitted with a cost estimate in writing to Fulhams Warranty Manager
(warranty@fulham.com) before any labor request is considered. Fulham reserves the right to secure
alternative cost estimates before authorizing labor allowance. Fulham reserves the right to review installation and operational documents, xtures, and site application before authorizing labor allowance. All
labor allowance requests made and/or submitted without prior written authorization by Fulham will not be
considered.
Terms and Conditions
FHIL Systems must be installed together as a system. FHIL Systems and FI Luminaires must be operated under suitable environmental conditions and in accordance with the latest National Electrical Code,
Underwriters Laboratory Bulletins, and ANSI Specications. This warranty will not apply in the event of
conditions demonstrating abnormal use or stress, such as operating temperatures in excess of maximum
rated temperatures, under/over voltage conditions, excessive switching cycles, or improper lamp. This
warranty will not apply to luminaires or other components provided by third parties.
Replacement of Product, Limits of Liability
The foregoing shall constitute the sole and exclusive remedy of the purchaser and the sole and exclusive
liability of Fulham. Fulham liability under this warranty shall be limited to the replacement of the FHIL
Systems and/or FI Luminaires, as the case may be. In no event shall Fulham be liable for any special,
indirect, incidental or consequential damages. No warranty of merchantability or tness for a particular
purpose is made or is to be implied. Fulham will not, under any circumstance, whether as a result of
breach of contract or warranty, tort, or otherwise, be liable for any incidental, special or consequential
damages, including lost prots or revenues or any other costs or damages. Fulham reserves the right to
examine all failed FHIL Systems and/or FI Luminaires and reserves the right to be the sole judge as to
whether any FHIL Systems and/or FI Luminaires are defective and covered under this warranty. This warranty is exclusive and in lieu of all other warranties including any warranty of merchantability or tness for
a particular purpose.
