A class of prep students have kicked the
Kris Kringle this year and donated their
presents to charity instead.
Bacchus Marsh Primary Schools Prep
T class have donated their gifts to the
Uniting Church
Christmas Appeal.

On Thursday (December 16) the students
crossed the road to the Bacchus Marsh
Uniting Church, where they placed their
donations under the Christmas tree.
Teacher Michelle Taylor said after

reading a book about the gift of
Christmas, the children decided to give
presents to those less fortunate.
We have been reading Dear Santa,
which is about children who are sick
or dont have a lot of money and are
not as fortunate to receive presents at
Christmas time, she said.
After reading the book, the kids
decided that they wanted to help out.

has been held throughout Australia for
the past 25-years.
In 2015, the appeal helped support over

Bacchus Marsh Uniting Church gift

and increasing living costs.

The appeal was launched throughout

The aftermath one year on

It has taken one almighty
effort, but 12 months on from
the devastating Scotsburn
fire, life has returned to the
area.
On Saturday 19 December
2015, the bushfire burned in
and around the Scotsburn,
Clarendon and Elaine areas,
resulting in the burning
of 4,674 hectares of land
and the destruction of 12
homes and 55 outbuildings
including sheds, shacks,
bungalows, cabins, garages,
wool sheds, hay sheds and
hundreds of kilometres of
fencing; approximately 4,000
animals were destroyed
following the fires.
The following is a numbers
snapshot of the recovery
efforts over the last 12
months:
There were more than 30
skip bins provided across
the area for disposal of
debris and metal following
the fire. The bins were
emptied on a regular basis
and the last ones removed
in mid August.

The Moorabool Shire was hit with wild fire over the
weekend that blazed through more than 4600 hectares of
land, destroying 12 homes and 30 sheds.
Residents from Scotsburn, Elaine, Mount Doran, Clarendon,
and Durham Lead were forced to flee their homes as Victorian
firefighters battled the blaze in extreme weather conditions.
The CFA have confirmed 12 houses in total were destroyed;
Scotsburn (six), Clarendon (three), Durham Lead (two) and
Elaine (one), with another four damaged to the point of being
uninhabitable.
A total of 1030 sheep and five horses died at Narmbool
the 2000-hectare property located at Elaine and owned and
operated by Sovereign Hill.
A CFA spokesperson said they were unable to confirm what
ignited the fire, however it was believed to have started on
private land.
The fast-moving blaze began on Finns Road in Scotsburn on
Saturday afternoon.
At 10pm that evening, more than 150 fearful residents
gathered in the Buninyong Town Hall for a community
meeting.
Buninyong police officer, Peter Anderson said a good
turnout showed how strong the community was.
We are going to need that strength over the next couple of
days, he said.
A Relief Centre in Ballan was established by the Moorabool
Shire Council on Saturday evening, before a second Relief
Centre was opened at Buninyong the following morning.
Moorabool Shire Council CEO Rob Croxford said the
decision to set up the relief centres came at the request of the
Incident Control Centre.
In hindsight it may have been prudent to have Buninyong
up earlier, but to resource two centres late Saturday night
would have been impossible. Ballan was out of harms way,
he said.
The City of Ballarat offered assistance and have been a
significant contributor from Sunday on. We will put out
requests to other neighbouring shires and to the State
Government for support in coming days.
With 523 firefighters, 69 tankers and three bulldozers
deployed over two days, the blaze was brought under control
by 8pm on Sunday after a welcome cool change arrived, with
crews continuing to patrol the area through the evening.
Golden Plains Shire Council failed to respond to questions
regarding their involvement and assistance with the fires,
emergency service crews and the efforts to engage with the
Moorabool Shire council.

Half a town of
fatty boombas

Fat, plump, stout, large,
chunky, call it what you like
but new health data has revealed more than half of the
adult population in Bacchus
Marsh is considered overweight and obese.
A comprehensive report by
Victoria University and Torrens University has revealed
that 69 per cent of Bacchus
Marshs adult population is
overweight, putting them at
risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
The report also showed that
more than 20 per cent of
adults in Bacchus Marsh are
daily smokers, 33 per cent
suffer from high cholesterol
and 23 per cent have high
blood pressure.

risky drinking habits.

A Paralympic champion
from Bacchus Marsh has
topped off a successful year
with a top five finish in the
2016 Australian Paralympic
Awards.
Ben Fawcett and the Australian wheelchair rugby
team were named one of five
Team of the Year finalists at
an award ceremony held in
Sydney on December 8.
Fawcett helped the Steelers defeat Great Britain,

Brazil, Canada and Japan
before playing their rivals,
the United States in the gold

medal match.
With neither side extending
their margin by more than
three points, the fourth period buzzer sounded with
the teams tied 49-a-piece.
Australia ultimately edged
out the US 59-58 in a doubleovertime thriller, becoming
the first team in history to
win consecutive Paralympic
gold medals and a world
championship in a four-year
period.

Wheelchair rugby is one

The CFA has rejected calls

by Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey to split the
introduction of the fire declaration season throughout
the Moorabool shire.
Raising the matter in urgent
business at the December 7
council meeting, Cr Toohey
asked what is the process
for people to get permits
for burn-offs once the fire
danger season has been
declared.
We need a common sense
approach based on drying out around the eastern
end of the shire, but much
of the middle and western
end of the shire is still very
lush and green and we just
received 25mm overnight
whats the simple, costeffective process for those
who havent had the opportunity to do any burning off,
or any opportunity to burn
their annual rubbish bonfire,
how do they do that without
having fire trucks and police
saying youre in breach of
fire restrictions? Cr Toohey
asked.
Because thus far they

havent had the opportunity
to do what other people in
the shire have had. It cannot be burned, even if you
wanted to, its still lush and
green.
Cr Toohey called for a return of the days when the
shire did have a split introduction of the fire season.
There used to be a common sense split around the
middle of the shire, which
recognised the different areas. It was a while back, along
the line of the Daylesford
highway, I cant tell you the
exact date.
Now were bound by rules
instead of common sense.
A CFA spokesperson said
that CFA consults with local government, volunteers
and other agencies, including Department of Environment, Land, Water and
Planning to inform the declaration of the Fire Danger
Period (FDP).
The FDP is based on local
conditions and take into account fuel loads, grassland
curing, weather and rain-

During the FDP fires cannot be lit in the open air
without a written permit
from CFA or a Municipal
Fire Prevention Officer. The
declaration of the FDP aims
to reduce the occurrence of
fires.
When burning off, residents need to adhere to strict
guidelines. This includes
registering burn-offs with
the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority by calling 1800 668 511
so that the burn off can be
added to a register. All calls
to Triple Zero (000) about
smoke sightings are crosschecked with that register,
and firefighters are called
out if nothing is listed for
that location.
Residents need to keep in
mind that burning off is not
the only way of reducing
hazards around properties.
Where available, residents
should take up councils
green waste collection to
remove green waste when
preparing their properties
and take care when mowing
to prevent fire starts.

two devoted workers have
been recognised by Ballan
District Health and Care
Timothy Brimson and Anne
Turner were each awarded
certificates for their invaluable contribution to the local hospital at their annual
general meeting held in mid
September.
Timothy received the annual volunteer award for his six
years of dedicated service.
A long-term Ballan resident,
Timothy volunteers in the
Ballan District Health and
Care nursing home, dementia unit and aged care hostel,
where he helps out with lifestyle programs and spends
time with the residents.

and Care, but has a real impact on the welfare of the

Failing to comply with a fire prevention notice can be a

pretty costly experience for residents.
Following unprecedented vegetation growth this season
with the high rainfall during winter and spring, council has
issued 487 Fire Prevention Notices to landowners across the
Shire.
To date, council has completed 95 per cent of initial
inspections of land in the high risk areas of the Shire, and 95
per cent of complaints in urban areas have been inspected.
Re-inspections are commencing this week and will continue
late into January where non-compliant properties will be
slashed when contractors are available.
But the slashing will by no means be free - if a resident has
not complied with a fire prevention notice they will be billed
for clean-up and will also receive a fine in excess of $1500 per
notice.
Council will then pursue outstanding costs and fines at the
Magistrates Court last year, council was successful in all
cases that went to court.
Mayor David Edwards said that private slashing contractors
had been inundated with work and were experiencing
breakdowns, which have pushed timelines out to mid
January to undertake work.
It is timely to remind all property owners that it is your
responsibility to maintain your land throughout the year
and this would definitely assist with the number of township
blocks that Council is receiving complaints about, Mayor
Edwards said.
These blocks should be scheduled for regular maintenance
even if you live out of town.
Developers undertaking sub-division works in townships
need to put in place a maintenance regime to ensure that
blocks for sale and being subdivided are maintained
throughout the year.

Ballans Krista Woodroffe
has become the first female
football manager of AFL
Goldfields.
The highly regarded athlete
played football for the Bacchus Marsh Football Club
in the AFL Goldfields Open
Age female competition in
2015 and was adjudged the
clubs Most Valuable Player.
She was also the recipient of
an AFL Goldfields Women
in Football scholarship and
was recently appointed
Assistant Coach of the 1st
Western Jets TAC Cup female team.
Her new full-time position
at AFL Goldfields will include managing the operation of the female competitions; game development
activities within schools,
Auskick and club promotion; and working with the
North Ballarat Rebels to
manage and introduce an
under-15 academy.
Krista is a member of the
Geelong Cats VFL list of 42
players announced for the
upcoming 2017 season and
has played and coached for
the Ballan and Melton senior
netball teams.
In 2015, she was part of
Springbank netball teams
premiership win.

organised, friendly and energetic person.

The not-for-profit business,
located on Gell Street Bacchus Marsh, has reinvented
the use of their shop front
with a glittering Christmas
exhibition.

Op Shop Vice President,
Barbara Di Collalto said the
exhibition was the shops
way of expressing gratitude.
It is a big thankyou to the
community for their generous donations. The ladies
from the Op Shop really appreciate all of the customers
that come in and this is our

way of wishing them a Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year.
Hopefully our customers
bring their kids down to see
it at night because it really
lights up the whole shop.

run by community volunteers, with 100 per cent of
funds donated back into Bacchus Marsh.

and less fortunate on Monday through to Thursday,

Cobra girls become
cat women

Two Bacchus Marsh footballers have been named in the VFL
Womens pre-season squad for the Geelong Cats.
Abbey Bertram and Emily Crawford were selected out of 160
females following a trial day held in Geelong last month.
The pre-season squad was selected by the VFL Womens
coaching panel, led by senior coach Paul Hood, and includes
women from Geelong, Bacchus Marsh, Kew and Sunbury.
The 42-member squad will commence their training at
Simmonds Stadium on Tuesday (December 29) before being
narrowed down to a 30-member team ahead of the 2017
season.
In a statement released by the Geelong Cats, VFL coach Paul
Hood said with so much talent, the squad selection was a
tough exercise.
The day was such a success, we had almost 160 women turn
out so its been a difficult exercise cutting the squad down to
just 42 but we are really pleased with the calibre of athletes
we have selected.
In other news, Bacchus Marsh womens football coach
Hayley Gossow was selected as part of the Collingwood
Womens AFL Coaching Group.
BMFC Womens Coordinator Rod Bertram said it was a great
result for the Cobras.
Pre-season has commenced for the BMFC women, with
training held at the rear oval of Maddingley Park on Monday
and Wednesday from 6pm.

Council Ofces will be closed from 12.30pm Friday 23 December, 2016 and will re-open

Christmas/New Year Closure notices will be placed on the Moorabool Shire Council website
and the Customer Service answering machine, as well as being advertised in the Moorabool
Leader.
Maternal & Child Health
Maternal & Child Health Service will be closed from 12.00pm Friday 23 December, 2016
and will re-open on Tuesday 3 January, 2017, excluding public holidays.
Families with urgent health issues are advised to refer back to the hospital of delivery or
their local Doctor.
24 hour phone advice is available through the Maternal & Child Health Line on 13 22 29.
Occasional Care
The Occasional Care sessions will begin on Monday 30 January, 2017 at the new Darley
Early Years Hub bookings can be made from 25 January, 2016.
Active Aged & Community Access
The Active Ageing & Community Access unit will be closed from 12.30pm on Friday 23
December, 2016 and will re-open on Tuesday 3 January, 2017. Limited Community Support
staff will be out in the eld providing personal care and emergency respite during this
period. An on-call service is available on 0409 138 201 throughout this time. We wish all
our clients and their carers a Merry Christmas and look forward to supporting you again
in 2017, Happy New Year.
Garbage & Recycling
Please note: all garbage and recycling services will run as normal over the Christmas/New Year
period. The three transfer stations in the Shire will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and
New Years Day.

Moorabool railway lines may soon be a
thing of the past.
West Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan
raised the issue in urgent business at
the December 7 council meeting in
Bacchus Marsh, calling on council to
explore ways to address the issue.
I just asked the question about could
we liaise with VicTrack about not
allowing the people to dump rubbish
on the railway land theres really easy
access to it, so could we put up bollards
or something, just to restrict it, Cr
Sullivan said after the meeting.
The people dumping it are
opportunists, arent they? They drive
down and dump it but if they cant get
access, then that would restrict illegal
dumping.
He said the rubbish dumped includes
mattresses and old TVs.
Its just disgusting, and the people
who do it are disgusting in my view.
Its just the ease of access; they can
drive their car and trailer in and dump
it and take off. But if they cant get
access, then they cant do it.
I just really want a casual conversation
with VicTrack to see if they have
something practical that might assist.
People arent going to carry their TV 500
metres in to dump it and take off if they
cant get access.

Rebecca Treadwell is a person
that people like to see.
And usually, its because she

appears at the side of the road
when your car has broken down.
As a female tow truck driver,
Rebecca works for Ballan-based
business Ballan Absolute Towing
Specialists, and also Springfields
Garage.
She not only does private pickups for the garage, but also is
a subcontractor for pick-ups
on behalf of major insurance
agencies for vehicle breakdowns.
Being a female tow truck driver

is so uncommon that Rebecca
is the only female driver for the
RACV in the whole of Victoria.
It was a job that Rebecca sort of

fell into, helping out her mate
who runs that garage who also
taught her to drive before she
obtained her licence.

I am not exactly sure when this
whole yuletide spirit became
dispirited, but I ran out of the ol
HO, HO, and HO well before
the fake Christmas tree decided
to go white, and we ran out of
old sixpences to throw in the
plum duff!
Its not that I dont enjoy the
family thing, and a man can
never have too many jocks and
socks, but if ever there was an
event that brings out the best
and worst in people, Christmas
would take pride of place.
Whilst I might be putting a little

too much bah in my humbug,
somewhere in amongst the fancy
wrapping paper, that for some
reason reflects a white Christmas
in the middle of an Australian
summer, and the abundance of
funny looking blokes looking
slightly overdressed in their red
suits and gumboots, I seemed to
have missed the point!
I am all for boosting the retail

economy, but consider the lack of
real protection for our retailers
as more and more people shop
online for products devoid of
tax, taking advantage of cheap

products made in economies
where the workers live in third
world conditions, where families
struggle to survive, let alone sit
around fake Christmas trees
waiting for the credit card
statement to arrive.
Its only a matter of Christmases
before the whole Yuletide
experience will be bought
online, as the people that once
worked in our retail stores
line up for their social security
payments. Of course the upside
will be the empty car parks and
queues where the angry people
seem to gather.
Trying to level up a retail playing
field in a Global economy, whilst
at the same time feeding three
tiers of Government, is like
climbing Mount Everest in
thongs; given that chasing down
GST on imported goods is near
on impossible for purchases
under a grand, you might as well
climb in bare feet!
The Government claims that
collecting the GST from online
importers costs more than the
tax they retrieve; that may be so,

but close down the retail sector
and see what that costs! It seems
to me our ability to manage
imports lies squarely in our
inability to manage our Trading
deals with other Nations.
As for buying Australian made,

if the retailers cant make a quid
selling stocking stuffers from
the Far East, imagine how they
would go filling their shelves
with home grown stuff! We all
like a bargain but whats the real
cost?
Buying Australian once meant a
quality product at a competitive
price; our manufacturers have
been cut so close to the bone that
they can do neither. The only
Industry thats having a win in
this country is Transport, as the
millions of online shoppers do a
triple by-pass on the Tax revenue
office to ensure The Asian
Century follows its namesake!
I wrote a poem for my grown
up kids a couple of years ago,
and theyre getting the same this
year!

And its not that I dont care.
Between Santa Claus and fake green trees
Its just too much for me to bear.

Raimond Gaita believes the
upsurge of Donald Trump
in America signalled the
end of reason. Trumps disdain of facts and argument
became so persistent and extreme, that he took his supporters - and America with
them - into a place where
he eroded the conditions
that enable the application
of concepts of fact, evidence
and argument.
If ever there was a time for
ignoring facts and evidence
and listening only to loud
voices then that time has arrived. Let us take a couple
of examples of ignoring fact
and evidence when it comes
to climate change.
Donald Trump on climate
change: You know the
hottest day ever was in
1890-something, 98. You
know, you can make lots of
cases for different views. I

have a totally open mind,
he said, later adding that
its a very complex subject.
Im not sure anybody is ever
going to really know.
But we do know.
Meanwhile here in Australia just as David Wachenfeld,

of bleaching in March and
April, and again at the same

sites in October and November. In the northern third of
the Great Barrier Reef, they
recorded an average (median) loss of 67% of coral cover
on a large sample of 60 reefs.
Yet with no science credibility a senator can claim,
after a swim on one part of
the Great Barrier Reef, that
all is OK. And people believe her??? This is further
evidence of the argument of
Raimond Gaita.
Then down here in Tasmania we have our own Jacqui

Lambie. Recently, in parliament, Jacqui thought it necessary to lecture us all on the
science of climate change.
And she was serious? Here
is just a part of her science:
I rise to make a short contribution to this matter of
public importance regarding climate change. And

because of natural climate
change, which is caused by
variations in the earths orbit
around the sun. The scientific record shows that no
amount of windmills, solar
panels, renewable energy
targets will stop the earths
temperature heating up by
another four or five degrees.
Why dont the Greens
(referred to during Jacquis
speech as the uninformed
Greens cretins cretins
perhaps but uninformed on
climate change?) and other
deniers of natural climate
change acknowledge these
scientific facts? Why wont
the Greens acknowledge the
fact that if the world temperature did rise two degrees
it would not be unusual,
extraordinary or beyond
the limits compared with
scientific records shown in
ice-core samples?
But again we know that this
is just absurd. Again Jacqui
Lambie chose to ignore the
worlds scientific authorities
and sees this as her right.
The end of reason is surely
with us. And notice the
number of times she uses the
word facts.
So as not to leave this weeks

opinion piece with total disregard for reason might I
offer a final word from the
current Pope on climate
change and our relationship
with the planet. Recently the
Pope said that modern men
and women have grown
up thinking ourselves owners and masters of nature,
with the right to plunder it
without any consideration

of its hidden potential and
laws of development, as if
subjecting inanimate matter
to our whims. This mentality has led to many ills, he
said, including a grave loss
to biodiversity.
We are not custodians of
a museum or of its major
artefacts to be dusted each
day, but rather co-operators
in protecting and developing the life and biodiversity
of the planet and of human
life present there, the Pope
said.
The subjection of politics to a technology and an

economy which seeks profit
above all else, is shown by
the distraction or delay in
implementing global agreements on the environment.

Darley.
The pavement has had a few
shrinkage cracks in it and a

The Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford has made
an absolute mess of the legislation, which has caused
incredible division, hurt and
worry among legitimate and
small-time hobby breeders.
The Economic and Infrastructure Standing Committee will this week call for
the Andrews Government
to abandon its plan to limit
breeders to owning a maximum of 10 female dogs.
This legislation has inflamed huge community
concern, with more than
100 dog owners, breeders,
farmers and local councils
ringing and emailing my office to say that the proposed
legislation will increase red

tape. It would also result
in costly compliance and
significant costs to breeders, show societies and local
government, as well as the
local councils who will have
to administer and police the
permit compliance.
The puppy farm legislation
is simply a dogs breakfast.
I cant remember a bill being second read in the Legislative Assembly and then
withdrawn, not to see the
light of day again.
My advice to the minister
is to scrap the legislation
and start engaging with
stakeholders to find a way
to avoid overlaying costly
bureaucratic
compliance
against puppy breeders who
are doing the right thing and
adhering to the Domestic

Animals Act 1994 codes and
standards.
The legislation needs to
use current animal welfare
codes, standards and laws
to have large-scale puppy
factories and Dogs Victoria
members legally compliant.

It is also a busy time a time

seen 271 lives lost on Victorian roads, 36* more than this
time last year. This not only
represents the lives lost, but
also the families, friends and
communities left mourning
their loved ones.
As a motor vehicle accident

While auctions only account for a small percentage

of sales transactions in regional Victoria, the fast flowing process of hammering
home a sale in a highly competitive market is proving to
be an effective method in a
number of regional areas.
Demand in the auction
market is generally driven
by strong buyer interest in a
particular area and is measured by a clearance rate
the proportion of properties
sold.
New REIV data shows 1,036
auctions were held in regional Victoria in the year
to September 30 with areas
around Ballarat and Geelong where median prices
have been solid during this
period experiencing the
highest auction volumes.
The south Geelong suburb of Belmont recorded
one of the largest increases
in auction numbers with
119 auctions held this year,
compared to 87 for the same
period last year. Close to the
Surf Coast and one of the
fastest growing regions in
Victoria, of the homes that
went to auction in Belmont,
92 sold a 37 per cent increase in auction sales over
2015 figures.
Auction volumes also increased in the nearby Geelong suburb of Highton,
with 82 auctions held up
from 76 for the same period
last year.
Meanwhile, vendors who
auctioned their homes in
East Geelong and Herne Hill
this year saw strong success
rates. In East Geelong, 52
homes went under the hammer with 40 selling, delivering a clearance rate of 77 per
cent. While in Herne Hill, 25
homes were auctioned with
20 selling a clearance rate
of 80 per cent.
In another region of Victoria, Ballarat Central held 26
auctions over the year attracting 12 sales this was
up from just five auction
sales last year.
Auction volumes also increased in the Gippsland
town of Sale, up 41 per cent
to 24 auctions; Echuca, up
13 per cent to 76 auctions;
Morwell, up 50 per cent to 15
auctions; and Horsham, up
15 per cent to 15 auctions.
The experience in regional
Victoria has been replicated
in Melbournes outer suburbs up to 50km and more
from the CBD where auction levels have continued to
grow in the past year.
Indicative of the trend have
been Hoppers Crossing in
the west of Melbourne and
Mornington in the southeast, which have both recorded more than 100 auction sales this year for the
first time.

Steve Sullivans rink, which
led their opposition all day
to run out six shot winners
and provide Avenue with
two valuable points.

Led by an excellent display
from Bob Delaneys rink (15
shots up) and Peter Thistlethwaites rink (8 shots up) it
set the stage for an exciting
finish, given Glenys Kays
rink struggled against good
opposition and Peter Glass
rink had given their opponents a seven shot start.
It was a tense battle over
the last few ends with Peter
Glass rink coming from behind to secure a draw and
Glenys Kays team securing
valuable shots in the final
two ends. Due primarily to
these factors and the two
winning rinks, Avenue were
able to hold on and record a
one shot win, thus propelling them up the ladder.

Division 5 v Buninyong
Unfortunately Avenue could
not sustain the form they
showed last week losing
all four rinks, with three of
the four rinks losing by just
six shots or less. Ray Humphreys rink fared best with
a heart-breaking one shot
loss, whilst Dave McKendricks rink suffered a rare
loss. Despite the loss, Avenue still sit comfortable in
third spot on the ladder going into the break.

Division 7 v Smeaton
Veteran Don Lemins rink
led the way with an emphatic 19 shot win, combined
with Peter Kays rink come
from behind win, where
they gained five shots over
the last four ends to win
by one shot, helped cover
the losses on the other two
rinks. This game went down
to the last bowl of the day
and perhaps fittingly when
all bowls had been delivered
the result was a draw, which
keeps the side in fourth
place on the ladder.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics
The Centre held their final

meet for 2016 last Friday
evening. A modified program was conducted and
during competition Santa
visited and chatted with all
athletes; he also drew the
Christmas raffle.
On
Saturday,
Bacchus
Marsh was represented by
six teams at the State Relay Championships held at
Lakeside Stadium, Albert
Park.
The Under 11 Girls were
first up on the track for BMLAC in the 4x200m event.
In a fast first heat, the girls
crossed the line in 4th place
securing a finals berth. The
Boys Under 9, in their first
State Championship event,
were up next. While the
boys were excited about
their opportunity of racing
at State, the excitement was
evident as they proudly
purchased then modelled
their State shirts. The boys
ran their hearts out and in
a close finish, placed 7th
in their heat. The Under 11
girls returned to the track for
their final and, although the
girls improved on their heat
time, they finished 8th overall. The final 4x200m event
for the Centre was the Under

11 Mixed Sex team. This
event was a straight final
and a close race saw BMLAC
finish in 6th place.
After the lunch break, the
4x100m events were underway. The Under 11 Mixed
team finished 4th in their
heat and narrowly missed a
progression to the final. The
Under 14 Girls took to the
track and enjoyed their opportunity of a State appearance and made a substantial improvement on their
Region time, placing 8th in
their heat. The final event for
the Centre was the Under 11
Girls and, although placing
5th in their heat, a fast time
saw them narrowly miss the
final by .7 of a second.
Athletics will now take a
break over Christmas and
the New Year and return to
competition on Saturday 14
January. Entries to the State
Multi Event Championships
to be held at La Trobe University Athletics Complex,
Bendigo on 28 and 29 January, 2017 close on Monday

McIntyre First XI v Sunbury
Winning the toss and batting, the opening pair of M. Sepala
(40) and I. Spiteri (44) saw the Bulls with 67 on the board when
their first wicket fell. The fall of the second wicket saw the
Bulls at 98 and as with previous weeks, partnerships were
hard to come by withwickets falling at 102, 110 and 120. D.
OLouglin (26) and A. Porter (35) managedto steady the ship
and post a defendable target. A brief cameo from T. McColl
(13) which incuded a beautiful six over cover saw the Bulls at
8/ 191 after their allocated 40 overs.
With 191 on the board the Bulls had faith in their bowling
attack to defend and they did not disappoint. M. Ekanayaka
was in blistering form claiming his first five wicket haul for
the Bulls with the fantastic figures of 8-1-5/25 backed up by
C. McKinley who took an impressive 4/32 off his 8 overs.
Finally, Bacchus Marsh bowled Sunbury out for 173, their
second loss for the season.

The Senior Lions sit atop the

BCA First XI ladder after a
bye in the weekends oneday round, with three wins
from their four completed
games.
The Lions Second XI took
on local rivals Ballan at Darley Park in a one-day fixture,
and after losing the toss was
sent into the field to start the
game. Things looked good
early when Mitch Ward had
gun Ballan batsman Cameron Dunne caught behind
on the first ball he faced, but
the visitors soon consolidated their innings to reach
6/206 before Zac Graham
was bowled by Ben Longhurst for 97, triggering a late
collapse that saw Ballan dismissed for 215. Longhurst,
Josh Calvitto, Ryan Densley
and Beau Jamieson all took
two wickets apiece for the
Lions, with Ward and Hamish Wheeler claiming the
other wickets.
With the bat, though, the
Lions struggled to gain
momentum aside from a
third wicket partnership of
76 between captain Marcus
Ingvorsen (35) and Zac Ticehurst, who top-scored with
55 coming down from the
First XI. Once Ticehurst was
dismissed to make the score
4/119, wickets fell in quick
succession afterwards as the
Lions could only reach 9/155
off their allotted overs.
Darleys Third XI took part
in a Twenty20 game against
Napoleons-Sebastopol. After
winning the toss, captain
Liam Jordan chose to bat
first. Unfortunately the Lions batsmen couldnt find
their groove, compiling
just 4/90 off their 20 overs

partnership between Bryce
Galea (17) and Corey Beaton
(18) thanks to some tight
bowling by the opposition,
who took only 13 overs and
the loss of one wicket before
they bypassed Darleys total,
with Josh Fitzgerald the lone
wicket-taker.
The Lions Fourth XI also
had their normal 40 over
game shortened to a Twenty20 clash against Ballarat
Fire Brigade, who won the
toss and batted first, making 7/144 off their 20 overs,
a score Darley would have
been confident of chasing
down. Tim Gallagher was
the pick of the bowlers with
3/25 off his four overs, with
Steven Cornford taking two
wickets and Andrew Bird
and Rick James taking one
each.
The Lions innings didnt
start well, with the dangerous Darren Hynes removed
for just five, and as a result
Darley couldnt gain any
traction with their innings,
losing wickets at regular
intervals to finish their 20
overs on 5/102, with Gallagher top-scoring with 26
and Lane Havelberg and
James Higgins both making
19.
The Lions re-commence the
2016/17 season on January
7 for their top three grades,
and January 15 for the
Fourth XI.
Darley Junior Cricket
The Darley Lions 16 & Under team enter the Christmas break in ideal fashion,
having registered their second win in as many weeks
to move inside the top four.

Associations final round before
Christmas were designated
as Friday night pink ball
Twenty20 fixtures, and after
losing the toss and bowling
first, the Lions held BallaratRedan to 5/114 off their 20
overs. Apart from a couple
of 50 run partnerships, Darleys bowlers held the Two
Swords relatively in check,
with Aiden Cox taking 2/25
off his three overs, and new
ball pair Corey Beaton and
Mitch Ward both conceding under six runs per over
whilst taking a wicket each.
After losing opening batsmen Bryce Galea to a runout with the score on just
four, the Lions middle order
steadied to provide a foundation for the innings, with
the winning runs scored in
the last overs of the day as
Darley recorded 8/118 off
their 20 overs. Blake Colley
top-scored with 31 off just
29 balls, with opener Jordan
Monaghan providing solid
support from one end with
22 of 42 balls and a cameo
innings from Mitch Ward (12
off 15) and Corey Beaton (11
off 14) providing the backbone of the innings.
Darleys 14 & Under First
XI didnt fare quite as well as
they travelled to Alfredton
Reserve to take on BallaratRedan, scoring just 62 off
their 20 overs after wickets
tumbled regularly throughout their innings. Only Ryan
Densley (13 off 16 balls, with
three fours), James Martindale (11 off 26) and Austin
Macbeth (10 off 20) scored
in double figures thanks to
some good bowling by the
opposition.
It didnt take long for the
opposition to chase down
the total, but by BallaratRedan batting their full 20
overs to score 6/135, it gave
Darley a chance to give everyone a bowl. As a result,
wickets were spread around,
with Jackson Smith claiming
two, and one each to James
Martindale, Ben Taylor,
Mackenzie Murray and Austin Macbeth.
It was better news for the
14 & Under Second XI, who
recorded a strong win over
Wendouree. The Lions held
Wendouree to 8/83 from
their 20 overs, with wickets
shared between their bowlers, and despite a shaky start
to their innings with Ethan
Thewma (5) and Aaron Cadman (1) dismissed early to
have Darley reeling at 2/10,
Brodie Ward and Rockey
Hoey came together to
steady the ship, both eventually retiring on 30 to lead the
Lions to victory.
Darleys Under 12 sides
had mixed results in their
final games, also both playing Twenty20 games as the
Darley Pride held Ballan to
just 5/50 off their 20 overs
before scoring 4/92 to claim
a comfortable victory, whilst
the Darley Cubs scored 1/63
in their game against Melton
South Primary School CC before their opponents chased
their score down to make
2/75, with Jackson Hunt taking one wicket and a run-out
delivering another.
All Darley junior sides return on Saturday 28 January with the Under 12 sides
re-commencing on Friday 3
February.
