To build a bookcase, for instance, accurate dadoes that accept shelf boards with very little play are a must. Only with the Accurate Guide can this be done by simply inserting two pieces of scrap from the shelf board into the Guide. This is a revolutionary development in the wood shop, benefitting both amatures and professionals. The Basic Process of Dadoing and — — Sliding Dovetail Slot Making with the Accurate Guide With the Accurate Guide, a dado or a sliding dovetail slot can be completed with two passes by the router. The first cut should be made with the Accurate Guide in the closed position. Then the second cut should be made with scrap pieces of the shelf inserted into the Accurate Guide to complete a dado or with pieces of the dovetail inserted into the Accurate Guide to complete a sliding dovetail slot. (See the article Regarding the thickness of the shelf and router bits), (5)Make the second cut along the fence (NO need to reset the fence herel). This completes the dado. If the dado is too tight to accept the side board, refer to Adjustment, below. Inserting the scrap pieces into Accurate Guide shifts the rowter the right distance Scrap pleces sad into to expand the widch of the dado, SIRO Pocket providing a perfect fit for the shelf board. Adjustment After the second cut, the width of the dade and the thickness of the shelt board becomes the same. If the joint is too tight, insert pieces of paper into the pockets to expand the width of the dado and make a third cut. Once you set an adjustment, you can make the following dadoes with —. the same settings. \ __/ Another cause behind the tightness could be the reduced diameter of a resharpened J router bit, dhe quality and hardness of the wood or sawdust sticking t9 the inside {faces of the Accurate Guide when used for the first cut. Here, since the GUIDE should be in perfect conact, a quick wipe with a clean cloth beforehand could solve vee Router Bits Two sizes of router bits are used with the Accurate Guide, depending on the thickness of the shelf board. Both 1/4" and 1/2" cutting diameter down cut straight or spiral bits provided good results according to our tests with clean cut dado edges. > Router Bit and Shelf Board Thickness Relationships LLP Vi y Y Seiicedncons] —fosrtiwteuma —[ Poacsutes | < ff ° Te cating da. straight or spiral e ll VA bel bit for dadoing The small pocket te aa ah ‘The small pocket ui TE cuting da, sigh or wining” _| etme oc All the boards should be olaned flat, If the boards are curved or twisted, accurate cuts can not be made with Accurate Guide. ‘The large pocket Elastic Band After long term use, the elastic band on Accurate Guide can wear out. Mal Slot ing a Sliding Dovet elf boards, The process of making a sliding dovetail slot with Accurate Guide is & basically the same as for dado making. You need a piece of dovetail made under the same conditions used when making the actual dovetails on the shelf boards. Use the same dovetail bit that cut the sliding dovetails. ‘You need a piece of dovetail for the Accurate Guide Length of dovetail Set the depth of cut on the router. Pieces of dovetaiis By using the Accurate Guide, the width of the dado and the width of the sli made very accurately. However, the Accurate Guide is only in charge of "the width", not the depth. You are in charge ot the depth of cut”. In particuiar, when making sliding dovetail joints, the length of the dovetail on the shelf and the depth of the dovetial slot on the side must be exactly the same. This is a measure of your own skill where the Accurate Guide can not help. 1g dovetait sfot can be If you could cut the both sliding dovetails and slots without restting the depth of cut on the router, it would be the most accurate way of making sliding dovetail joints. We are now prototyping the Accurate SD Jig that is designed to use with the Accurate Guide to make the both dovetails and slots without resetting the depth of cut on the router. By the time you read this operation manual, we might have released the Accurate SD Jig. So, contact us!
