Gas-Liquid Equilibria
Two Phase Region: The area bounded by the bubble point and dew point
curves on the phase diagram of a multicomponent mixture defines the
conditions for gas and liquid to exist in equilibrium.

Ideal Solution
An ideal liquid solution is a solution for which:
mutual solubility results when the components are mixed
no chemical interaction occurs upon mixing
molecular diameters of the components are the same
intermolecular forces of attraction and repulsion are the same
Raoult's Equation:

Dalton's Equation:
Raoult's and Dalton's equation is valid only if both the gas and liquid
mixtures are ideal solution and ideal gas.

Material Balance Method:

n : total number of moles in the mixture
nL: total number of moles in the liquid
ng : total number of moles in the gas

zj : mole fraction of the jth component in the total mixture

xj : mole fraction of the jth component in the liquid
yj : mole fraction of the jth component in the gas

Calculation of Pb (Ideal Solution):

The bubble point is the point at which the first bubble of gas is formed. For
all practical purposes, the quantity of gas is negligible. Thus we can take ng
to be equal to zero and nL to equal the total moles of mixture.

ng = 0 , nL = n , and P = Pb

Calculation of Pd (Ideal Solution):

At the dew point, the mixture is entirely in the gas phase except for an
infinitesimal amount of liquid. Thus we can take nL to be equal to zero and
ng to equal the total moles of mixture.

nL = 0 , ng = n , and P = Pd
