1. Scope of the Course

a) To provide an overview of the study of the basic principle of working of laser, different
types of lasers and their applications, basic principle of optical fibres, their uses in
communication, electrodynamics and in-depth idea of theory of relativity.
b)To understand the need of quantum mechanics and related phenomenon, electronic
behavior of solids, different types of magnetic materials, role of superconducting
magnets in engineering. The course instructions are useful in understanding engineering
problems for its physical interpretation and viability.
c) The above mentioned topics will help the students to develop sufficient depth in both
engineering and physics, after the course they will be able to co-relate fundamental
key concept of physics to engineering problems.
2. Objectives of the course
The main objectives of the course that the students:
Should understand the basics of LASERs and their application in Fiber optics
communication.
Should develop a good understanding about the physical significance of
Gradient, Divergence and Curl so as to learn propagation of Electromagnetic
waves using Maxwell's equation.
Should appreciate the wave nature of particles in context of Quantum
Mechanics and learn to apply the same to different physical systems.
Learn the fundamentals of Semiconductors based on Quantum theory of
Electrons and their basic Engineering application.
Should assimilate the knowledge about magnetic characteristics of materials
used for digital information storage.
Should know the basic Principles of superconductivity and properties of
superconductors.
3.
