3. LESSON SUMMARY:

Large piece of paper folded into a book with 4 sections

Scissors

5. LESSON COMPONENTS:
1. Students will pull out their New Mexico History books and sit at their desks. Students will
have already read through all of the attractions, state parks, and historical monuments in
New Mexico prior to the lesson.
2. Teacher will ask students what an artifact is and have students take turns talking about their
definition of an artifact.

Definition: an object made by a person, typically an item of cultural or historical interest.

3. Ask students what a brochure is. What kind of brochures have you seen? What could you use
them for?
Definition: a small book, pamphlet, or magazine that has many pictures and information
about a product, a place, etc.
4. Teacher will show his/her artifact to the class. I would show my teacup artifact along with
my brochure.
5. Model: describe artifact and its importance to me and my identify/culture, etc. Show my
brochure and its contents. Pass the brochure around the class so students can open it and look
at its different parts. Describe how the brochure shows pictures of the artifact and describes
its importance as well as its appearance.
6. Ask students if they can think of an artifact they have at home that describes them. Let each
student take a turn saying what their artifact would be.
7. Talk about travel brochures with the class and how they can be used to persuade a person to
visit a place. Since the class has been studying New Mexico, they will make a travel
brochure for New Mexico and the things they have been learning about (parks, monuments,
etc.)
8. Pass out paper to students and have them fold the paper so there are four sections.
9. Students will cut out pictures from the New Mexico History book and color them in. There
are pages after each section with pictures of monuments, state parks, artifacts, etc.
10. Next, they will glue them into their travel brochure and describe the place or thing and why
someone should visit or see it.
11. On the first page of the book students will write Travel Brochure: New Mexico, their
name, and draw a picture.
12. Students will set up their brochures around the class and have 10 minutes to walk around and
look at their classmates brochures.
