Skills Process is a learning process that is designed so that students find the facts,
build concepts and theories with the intellectual skills and scientific attitude the students
themselves. Students are given the opportunity to be directly involved in scientific activities
as done by the scientists, but the process skills approach does not intend to make every
student to become a scientist (Devi, 2011). According Dahar (1985: 11), Science Process
Skills (KPS) is the student's ability to apply the scientific method in understanding,
developing and finding science.
KPS is very important for every student in preparation to use scientific methods in
developing science and are expected to gain new knowledge / develop process knowledge
have dimiliki. Keterampilan science as an approach to learning is very important because it
fosters experience in addition to the learning process. Given the increasing number of schools
that have had a biology laboratory, making it necessary efforts to improve the effectiveness of
learning, especially learning outcomes of Cognitive achievement that is supported by the

assessment of learning outcomes in the aspects of skills and attitudes (Rustaman, 2003).
KPS classification is as follows:
1. Viewing
Observing is the process of collecting data on phenomena or events by the senses. To be able
to master the skills of observing, students should use as many senses, ie, seeing, hearing,
feeling, smelling and tasting.
2. Grouping / Classification
Grouping is a systematic used to classify things based on certain conditions. Classifying
process included several activities such as looking for similarities, look for differences,
contrasting characteristics, compare, and find the basic classification.
3. Interpret
Interpreting the results of observations is to draw tentative conclusions from the data on
record.

4. Foresee
Foresee is estimated based on the observed data are reliable (Word, 2000)
5. Asking questions
Skills process of asking questions can be obtained by students by asking questions of what,
why, how, questions for clarification or questions backgrounds hypothesis.

7. Plan your experiment
For students to have the skills to plan experiments, then these students should be able to
determine the tools and materials to be used in the experiment.

9. Applying the concept
Skills students apply the concepts mastered if students can use concepts they have learned in
new situations or to apply the concept in new experiences to explain what was happening.

These skills include learning to read charts, tables, or diagrams of the experimental results.
KPS benefits are:
1. PPP can provide stimulation of science, so that students can understand the facts and

science concepts well.


2. Provide opportunities for students to work with science, not merely telling or listening to
stories about science. This causes the students to become more active.
3. KPS make the students learning process and product knowledge as well.
How to Measure Science Process Skills
1. Characteristics of Basic Science Process Skills Test
a. Common characteristics, namely:

intellectual, manual and social. Cognitive skills involved because by doing process skills of
students using mind. Manual dexterity skills clearly involved in the process because they
involve the use of tools and materials, measurement, preparation or assembly tools. Social
skills are also involved in the process skills as they interact with each other in carrying out
the teaching and learning activities, for example, discuss the results of observations. Process
skills should be developed through direct experiences as a learning experience. Through

Science process skills (PPP) is the complex skills used by scientists to conduct scientific
investigations into the series of the learning process. According Dahar (1996), science
process skills (PPP) is the student's ability to apply the scientific method in understanding,
developing and finding science. KPS is very important for every student in preparation to use

scientific methods in developing science and are expected to gain new knowledge or develop
the knowledge you already have.
According Dimyati (2009), KPS advantages are:
